Macker (and wind) on the way!

Hola amigos!  The buoys are starting to show some long period SW swell so thing will be picking up. We actually had some pretty fun swell today and it was clean all day!  Tomorrow (Saturday) we’re looking at some inconsistent shoulder/HH surf to start the day.  Consistency and size will pick up through the day as the swell fills in and remains in the HH/OH range for Sunday morning. We’ll look for that WNW swell to fill in Sunday as well.   The biggest hiccup will be the weather with some fairly gusty winds looking to blow starting Sat night and through til Monday morning.  That’s going to make a mess of a really nice swell.  Things should really get rockin’ by midday Monday with some well over head sets and getting bigger quickly...no joke!  (April 1st!)  That swell is moving in and out quickly so by early Monday morning we’re looking at bombers coming through in the double overhead ++ range.  This swell will no only pack a punch but it’s gonna kick some serious a$$ too!  The swell peaks early Monday morning with size fading quickly through the day but we’re still looking at OH surf by sunset.  Tuesday will still have plenty of fun surf in the OH range to start and taper off to HH/shoulder high by nightfall.  By Wednesday we’ll all be able to rest up, lick our wounds and fix all the dings on our boards as we’ll see a new but much smaller SW swell in the waist/chest high range.  Looks like some short period WNW after that to end next week.  Wow, what a week of surf ahead!

Unfortunately the wind is going to make mincemeat out of the surf on Sunday.  While we should see some early AM fog and clearing skies with calm winds most of Saturday day a 30% chance of showers (so, 70% of no showers) and some gusty westerly winds will arrive Sat night.  Sunday is looking at sunny but gusty 15-25mph winds all day.  Such a bummer.  Winds should calm down a bit and will turn and blow out of the SE all night Sunday at about 5mph as we get light Santa Ana conditions.  Hopefully that will clean things up enough to make that macker swell surfable on Monday morning.  Wind will calm down by midday (and air temps in the high 60s) so we should see some decent and clean conditions for the midday/afternoon sessions.  A bit of westerly winds are forecasted for the evening session.  Tuesday looks to be a gorgeous day with sunshine and warm air temps (low 70s).  This will be the nicest day of the week.  Sunshine and some clouds Wed with a cool day Thurs before warming up again for the weekend. Tides are looking to be a factor as we approach the Full Moon at the end of the week.  High tide in the wee hours of the morning will race out to a near zero low tide by mid-morning which means even more water moving with that big swell.  Hope your paddling arms are up to the challenge!  Could see some pretty nice barrels Monday afternoon as things clean up and the tide drains out.  Can't wait to see the photos.

Be careful if you journey out Monday…be smart.  Surf safely.  Send me photos if you'd like to share them! (mishwoo@yahoo.com)

Lates!

Buoys are jumpin'! (just a quickie!)

Howdy!  Looks like the buoys are already starting to jump!  Some of you might have caught some fun waves this evening as things started to glass off and we started to see more groundswell and less wind swell.  Looks like we'll have some light NW winds tonight and then SW breezes super early so tomorrow's dawn patrol might have some bump on it before the winds turn ESE.  Surf looks like it should be pretty fun tomorrow with that WNW filling in all day.  Look for some waist/chest high waves around the county in the morning with shoulder/HH waves at the better winter spots.  There's a fair amount of west in this swell so most breaks will be picking up fun surf all day. Mild to moderate winds picking up by mid-afternoon. Doesn't look like it'll glass off in time for the evening session.  That S looks like fun for the weekend and that WNW for the start of next week is picking up steam and charging straight at us!  Hope none of you come down with the "flu" Monday!

Just dropping y'all a quick note...time to head out!

Later!

Small Thurs but lots of surf on the way!

Greetings Southern California!  Some fading NW wind swell and slowly fading SW groundswell on tap for Wednesday.  Look for surf to be a little lumpy and pretty small…knee to thigh high.  A new NW short period swell will fill in for Thursday with knee high surf to start the day but ending up with some chest/shoulder high surf and the occasional HH set by sundown.  Friday will start off in the shoulder high range but that NW will peak through the night and taper off through the day...backing down to waist high by sunset.  We will however see the start of a decent SW groundswell late Friday mixed in with a short period WNW swell.  The very long period S swells will fill in Sat morning and surf will increase to HH+ by midmorning.  Look for some fun HH+ surf all day and into Sun with some OH+ surf at the better summertime breaks and the WNW will fade by the end of the day Sat.  The best part is that for Monday a juicy WNW is looking to grace our coastline and drop some OH+ surf on our beaches.  That swell looks to gear up Sun late afternoon/evening and pick up quickly from HH to OH+ by morning.  The good news is that that the weather should hold and be gorgeous for Monday and the southern hemisphere is alive and well…sending more good love our way!

The next five days will see a few more clouds and even a small chance of drizzle Wed night and into Thurs.  This really means clouds and NW winds Wed night and into Thurs.  That will leave some lump and bump on the surf for Thursday as the winds pick up through the day.  You might be able to find some nice protected spots in the morning though if you know where to look.  Winds calm down Thurs night and leave Fri with some early marine layer but calm clean conditions the start of the day with a bit more wind by midday.  Skies should clear up for some sunshine and air temps in the mid to upper 60s Friday and then cool down again for Sat and sunny, mid 60s for Sunday.   Nicest day looks to be Friday once the marine layer has burned off.  The last few south swell have pushed some slightly warmer water our way…it’s still plenty chilly but up a degree or two.  Look for some pretty mild tide movement over the next week as we’re coming off the New Moon. (like my cool new moon phase blog app?)

I think that covers it all.  Have a nice rest of the week and enjoy the upcoming swells!  We’re overdue for some juicy fun surf!

Toodles!
Mish

NW wind and SW ground on tap for this weekend

Salutations SoCal!  A quiet surf week for most of us with very little surf going on right now.  The N and S Pacific have taken a little break but don’t you worry your pretty little head.  Both hemispheres are waking up and throwing swell our way.  Saturday morning we’ll start to see the very start of a decent SW swell from a storm that sort of just sat and spun down there by the Antarctic (where penguins live!) for a while.  That will send us very inconsistent (it’s a Southern Hemi groundswell after all!) waves to start off in the waist high waves for the dawn patrol.  That will be followed on Sunday by some bigger NW shorter period groundswell that will be followed shortly by some foul weather by midday.  At least the surf consistency and size will pickup but the energy and conditions will be less than desirable by mid-morning. We’re looking at some crossed up waist high surf by morning jumping to chest/shoulder by midday and some slightly bigger sets for the evening session.  The NW peaks mid-morning Monday with some HH+ surf and then starts to back down to shoulder/HH by the end of the day.  Look for some chest/shoulder high surf early Tuesday and dropping quickly but much cleaner conditions.  Wednesday is the small day with knee/thigh high surf for most of the day BUT with some fun WNW groundswell gearing up that evening.  Surf should bump back up into the chest/shoulder high range with some HH sets at the better winter spots.  This swell will have a decent amount of west in it as the jet Stream looks to lay low and push the storms across the North Pacific at low latitudes meaning…more west in the swells!  That’s good for everyone (until the rains come).  Thursday look to have some solid WNW groundswell in the shoulder/HH range and on into Friday.  And then, GET THIS…there’s a juicy old storm that looks like it’s going to race across the Southern Hemi and send us a nice groundswell for next weekend.  We could see a little weather though so we’ll have to see how things pair up as we get closer to next weekend.

As far as the weather goes for this weekend it looks like we’ll see some early marine layer in the morning with some light east winds becoming light out of the west by midday.  Unfortunately it won’t be all that warm with air temps in the low 60s at best.  Then Sunday the ESE winds pick up in the morning (not bad if you know where to look eh?) and get pretty gusty out of the S (30mph).  That will be capped off with a good cleansing of rain after about 11am.  Rain through the nigh Sunday...and more gusty howling winds.  The heaviest rains look like they’ll be falling in the first part of the night so if you’re out and about bring an umbrella.  Still a slight chance of showers Monday AM but pretty much the surf is toast with the overnight winds.  Even though we’ll start to see sunshine Monday it’ll still only be in the very low 60s.  sunshine for the rest of the week but again, cool air temps in the low 60s along the coast.  A few more clouds developing for the second half of the week as we approach a slight chance of showers for next weekend (during that awesome SW swell).  Water temps very chilly and in the mid-50s.  Some moderate tide swings as we had the New Moon Thursday.  We’re coming off the 0.0’ tide early in the morning with a decent push (bummer there’s no swell) and a medium high late morning and draining back down to the medium low in the late afternoon.

Sooooooooo, looks like the best chance of some surf is later in the day Sat as the swell picks up and the winds stay light.  Sleep in…then go surf!

As for me…I’m out!

Ocean Notes:

1)       If you haven’t already seen it and you liked the Planet Earth series you HAVE to see the newest Discovery Channel show, Frozen Planet.  Not only is it in stunning HD but the footage looks like they either glued a GoPro to a caribou or somehow have a 1,000,000mm lens and can film from miles away.  The footage is simply amazing.  It’s Sundays at 8pm.  Watch it…or DVR it…Mother Nature never looked so good!  http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/frozen-planet/

2)      If you haven’t seen any Daily Surf Videos lately here’s a good one…then again, I think anything with Slater, Hobgood (any of the bros) and Taj Burrows ripping waves is gonna be good.  What do you think?  http://www.dailysurfvideos.com/videos/kelly-slater-dane-reynolds-taj-burrow-co-the-circus-at-lowers-220

3)      Looks like La Paloma is coming up with some pretty killer flicks from the Banff Mountain Film Festival this Sunday and Monday and then the winner of the film festival will be show on Tuesday, April 2nd.  More details on times and tickets…click…here:  http://www.lapalomatheatre.com/EVENTSCHEDULE.htm

4)      With Spring Cleaning just around the corner it’s high time you get rid of some of those ratty old t-shirts that are cluttering your closet.  BUT…what to do with them?  Glad you asked…here are a few idea… http://earth911.com/news/2009/07/27/8-ways-to-reuse-your-t-shirt/

5)      And here’s a cool new…or kinda new outdoor clothing company from yes…TEXAS!  No, don’t pass it up just cause they’re from Texas…click on the link.  I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.  Here come the Howler Brothers! http://howlerbros.com/

6)      And we’ll end with some surf eye candy…yes, it’s Slater but I’m talking about the wave too.  :-)  http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/sequence-of-the-week-kelly-slater_68267/

COLD morning but sunshine and swell on the horizon!

Just a quickie…some lingering S groundswell still on the buoys today with conditions cleaning up throughout the day.  Look for rapidly dropping size tomorrow (Tuesday) but nice (but cold!) east winds for the first part of the day and sunshine.  We still saw some chest/shoulder high waves with HH not out of the question.  Look for clean waist/chest tomorrow morning with less size by sundown.  For the rest of the week we’ll see some short period NW swells Wed and Thurs in the waist high range combo’d with some underlying SW swell.  Small surf Fri (knee high) and then picking up out of the WNW for the weekend…waist/chest.  Looks like another NW weather system making it’s way towards us for the start of next week but we’re also seeing some sizable activity in the southern hemi.  Some nice juicy groundswell brewing for sure!

Weather is looking pretty darn cold for the upcoming dawn patrol.  If you're reading this Monday night you'll be ahead of the game if you throw an extra pair of sock on with your UGGs tomorrow morning.  After the morning thaw things are looking pretty spiffy for the next few days with sunny skies and air temps in the mid to high 60s thru Wed before cooling down again for the end of the week and into the weekend.  More clouds over the weekend and then that potential storm system appears for Monday.  Light easterly and light/moderate (9mph) west winds tomorrow afternoon turning NW for Wed and Thurs.  More patchy fog and clouds for Thurs/Fri as well.  Water temps chilly…mid 50s…55 not uncommon.  Tidal movement is most extreme from the mid-morning high to the negative low mid-afternoon and then there’s a nice turn around push for the evening session.

Looks like tomorrow and Wed will be the ideal surf days this week with Wednesday being the warmest but Tuesday having the tail end of the S and NW combo swells.

Gotta jam like Spam!

A lot of swell and a lot of wind!

Boogaloo everyone!  Hope you’re all warm and dry while reading this.  We’ve got a nice late Winter storm going on right now throughout California with SoCal taking on some ugly messy high surf out of the W and more gusty winds on the way for a few days.  If the wind wasn’t making a mess of everything we’d see some well OH surf in the southern half of the county and some HH surf up north.  Looks like some fresh NW and BIG (read: OH++/DOH) windswell mixed with new SW groundswell for Sun and into Monday.  That NW will dominate the beaches with the inconsistent SW making an appearance for those at the south facing beaches.  Look for HH+ surf Monday and tapering off a lot but cleaning up a little Tuesday…chest/shoulder high.   Look for a small NW to fill in Wed.  Another SW groundswell looks to show for late Wed and into Thurs so the better summer spots should have some fun surf in the waist/chest range for Thurs.  Slightly smaller for Fri and then look for more NW wind swell to show up with potentially some more weather but nothing close to this weekend’s storm…mostly clouds and S winds.  Lots happening down south so we should get more Southern Hemi groundswell (and hopefully warmer water!).

Of course if you’ve stuck your head outside in the last 24 hours you’ve probably figured out that the wind, rain and hail is a big feature of this weekend’s surf report and forecast.  The rains will continue thru tomorrow and start to taper off in the afternoon.  Expect some pretty cold winds to blow all night and day with nighttime temps in the high 40s (but around 40 with the wind chill factor) and daytime reaching the mid-50s.  Chance of showers for Sun night and thru Monday with even a slight chance Tues.  Winds will finally calm down Tuesday with Wed being the first clean morning of surf.  Sunshine should return Tues but Wed will be the sunniest and warmest day all week (mid-60s).  Sunshine Thur and Fri too and back to cloudy with a slight potential for some showers for next weekend.  Water temps are pretty chilly with the local buoy readings in the mid 50s.  Moderate to extreme tide swings with the New Moon approaching.  High tide’s in the early AM and the negative tide is midday with some nice water movement all day.  Pretty much the wind is going to mess it all up though so you’ve got a few days to think about it.

DON’T SURF IN POO!

Later skater!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       Once things “clean up” a bit there’s always the question of water quality!  Check in with San Diego Coast Keeper and see if your beach is open and safe for surfing.  http://www.sdcoastkeeper.org/learn/san-diegos-waters/coastal-water.html

2)      With some time on our hands with all of this wind and rain I thought a few surf vids would be a good idea this time around.  Let’s start with Cloudbreak Sept 2010…oh my goodness…and I MEAN…GOODNESS!  http://vimeo.com/15181963

3)      This is pretty cool…kite surfing with no straps and killing it!  http://vimeo.com/13450687 More vid...kite surfing in Indo…looks pretty fun… http://vimeo.com/7462419

4)      And now for something completely different…tow-inbig wave riding…on a KAYAK!   Hmmmmmmmmmm…looks like fun til he meets the white water.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxSDdaHzTJM&feature=player_embedded#!

5)      And a little humor to end the day…a new definition of “crowd surfing”… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vvhds75pvo&feature=player_embedded#!

NW and juicy SW swell combo...get it while it's hot (and clean!)

Hola amigos!  Well, we’ve got some fun surf along the coast today with some decent size too!  We’re looking at some waist/chest high surf with H sets not uncommon.  Surf’s out of both the NW (kinda steep) and a juicy SW groundswell…also steep but making a showing around the county.  That SW is still picking up steam and should peak late Thursday.  Look for some pretty fun surf through the day Thursday with shoulder/HH surf at the S and W facing breaks.  Of course the best summer spots will produce some extra juicy nuggets.  Swell starts to fade Friday as that big ugly storm front makes its way down the coast.  Looks like Friday morning should still be clean enough for some fun waves in the chest/shoulder range with some HH sets still. Size backs down to waist/chest by sunset.  By Saturday we’re looking at even less surf and a big old ugly storm on top of that.  S winds blowing all Friday night and picking up Sat through the day will make mincemeat out of whatever surf is left.  Sunday is more of the same with more gusty winds.  Unfortunately it looks like new a sizable SW swell will be marred by sizable NW wind swell for late Sunday, Monday and into Tuesday.  With SW winds blowing even after the rains stop I think most surf will be a mess.  We should be able to catch the tail end of the S Wed with some waist high surf as winds start to calm down.

So, as you can tell weather is the big factor as we have plenty of swell in our forecast.  So, Thursday is THE DAY…peaking juicy SW groundswell with some sunshine and cool air temps in the low 60s.  Winds WILL pick up in the afternoon so the morning sessions will be your best bet…not to mention the tide will be draining out.  Calm winds for early Friday so maybe hop on but get it early cause winds look like they’ll pick up by mid-morning and then it gets ugly.  W and S winds blowing all night and into Sat morning…gusty through Sun and Monday and Monday night accompanied by periods of locally heavy rain.  The forecasts have 1-2” of rain along the coast…with 3-5” in the mountains and snow levels dropping to 3500’.  So, pretty much it’s a “sleep in, soup and grilled cheese sandwich, read the paper or watch a movie” kind of weekend.  Best to stay out of the water and off the roads.  Oh, and it’s going to get cold too with daytime temps Fri/Sat in the high 50s and Sunday in the high 40s/low 50s…yes, that’s the daytime temp!  Water quality will be severely compromised not to mention colder than…well, cold.  Tides are starting to swing with the high in the early early morning hours and drained out negative lows late morning.

In a nutshell…surf Thursday…morning is ideal…or Friday morning before 10am.

Crystal ball is out of gas!
