Sizable wind swell then SW groundswell

Hey there!  Hi there!  Looks like we’ve got some jump in surf height today and Friday as a significant WNW wind swell moves on in.  Surf will be fairly consistent and in the chest/shoulder high range for north facing winter beaches with some inconsistent background SW groundswell in the waist/chest range for the more south facing summer beaches.  Wind swell will peak Friday afternoon and fade pretty quickly overnight with wind swell surf in the waist/chest high range for Sat morning.  Saturday afternoon will see some new SW groundswell start to fill in. Again, super inconsistent at first with the swell becoming more apparent by Sunday morning.  Decent energy and surf for summer spots in the chest/shoulder high range with the occasional slightly bigger set at the better summer breaks. 

That swell sticks around Monday with similar sized surf, Tuesday with slightly smaller chest high surf, tapering off more Wed with waist/chest high surf and Thursday the dregs of the swell will hit the waist high range with very little energy.  There’s not much activity in either hemisphere as far as surf generating storms.  We’re looking at a little wind swell for Friday with a little weather throwing something at us but it’s kind of quiet otherwise.

As far as the weather goes it looks like we’re going to see more of that patchy fog in the early mornings and evenings again but clearing to sunshine for most of the days.  Not particularly warm as Spring conditions keep us in the mid60s all weekend.  A little warm up on Monday and Tues before cooling down a few degrees.  Wind patterns look fairly common for Spring time too…calm mornings and mild to moderate SW winds by the afternoon.  That means the morning sessions look to be pretty clean and the afternoon sessions will have some bump on them. 

Tides are starting to get moving as we see a not-too-crazy high tide in the morning and a pretty drained out tide for the early afternoon sessions while the medium high tide fills in for the sunset sessions.  Full moon isn’t until next Tuesday.  Water temps are trying to creep up with these last few S swells. We’re seeing temps in the high 50s.  You could probably get away with a 3/2 if you’re not already in it…ditch the booties unless you’re doing the super dawn patrol or moonlight session. 

Looks like some combo before a nice SW groundswell moves into town to kick off next week.

2)    And seeing as it’s Spring time and all I thought it would be good to pass along the website for the California Native Plant Society .  If you’re doing some landscaping and would like to be more Planet-friendly how about planting what is supposed to be here in the first place!  Sorry, tropical plants and lush lawns aren’t natural habitat in arid ol’ San Diego!

More swell now...smaller later this week!

Aloha!  We’re looking at a building swell for Tuesday as a nice NW groundswell fills in late this evening and through the cold early morning hours.  It’ll join the current NW long period swell to boost surf into the chest high range with some shoulder/HH sets as the swell peaks in the afternoon.  Tides will do a number on the quality as the late morning high will slow things down and the negative late afternoon low will drain out most spots.  Either way we’re looking at more swell so that’s a good thing.  Wed we’ll see plenty of swell to start the day with waist/chest high surf and the occasional bigger set…again, slowed a little with the higher morning tide.  Swell backs off through the day with thigh/waist high surf by Thursday and then tiny knee high surf for Friday.  Saturday we’ll see some funky windy weather and a little NW groundswell but really only in the knee/waist high range.  Surf picks up a tad more on Sunday with knee to waist high waves out of the WNW and potentially some crossed up conditions.  Monday sees the biggest boost in size as that swell fills and a new W swell looks like it should start to fill in on top of it with waist/chest to start the day and some chest/shoulder high waves by the end of the day.  That’s a solid week off so we’ll have to see how that storm behaves over the next 48 hours.

Some wildly swinging weather changes as we enter the work week.  Crazy cold air temps today and tonight make for a brisk sunset session tonight and dawn patrol in the morning.  Thank the E winds for that!  We’ll see clear sunny skies and more air temps peaking in the low 60s along the coast with more light E winds all day.  Clear and cold again Tuesday night and Wed with air temps inching up ever so slightly Thursday (mid60s) and even more for Friday (high 60s/low 70s). A few more clouds and plenty of NNE winds for Fri.  Winds decrease through the weekend and air temps in the high 60s/low 70s.  Still seeing some extreme tidal movement with the late morning high draining out to a late afternoon low.  Things will mellow out through the rest of the week.  Water temps in the mid50s still.  Still need plenty of rubber especially for those early and late sessions!

Looks like some fun surf Tues and Wed…nice conditions too!

NW wind swell...and wind

Cheers mateys!  Sorry, busy busy work schedule has been boggin’ me down so my computer time is scare.  I’ll try to make up for it now…well, the bad news is that tomorrow will be pretty small as far as surf goes. We have the tail end of a crazy steep SSW that’s basically passing us by and the dregs of a small NW wind swell.  That translates into small bumpy surf to start the day…knee/waist high is my best estimate for Tuesday.  The good news is that we’re getting more surf starting late Tuesday and picking up and up and up Wed thru Friday.  By Wed morning we’re looking at some waist high waves with some chest high sets here and there. Remember, this is a wind swell so not the nicely times sets like a groundswell.  Increasing swell through the day will deliver some chest/shoulder high surf by evening and we’re looking at HH+ surf for Thursday and Friday with surf backing down to shoulder high early Sat and waist/chest by Sat evening.  The not-so-good-news is that most of that swell will be tainted by winds making for less than ideal conditions.  (Don’t hate the messenger!)  Sunday is looking to drop off significantly with a few lingering waves in the waist high range for the morning sessions and then knee high for the start of next week.  There are some more NW wind swells that aren’t too impressive milling about in the N. Pac but the Southern Hemi is looking like it might just produce a nugget if the projections continue on their current course.  We even have a Tropical Depression that isn’t going to deliver any juicy into our swell window but it’s a good sign of things to come…keep your fingers and toes crossed!

I think Spring is lingering into our summer this year as the winds will be our nemesis this week.  As the swell picks up the SW winds will as well.  Tues winds will pickup out of the S by mid-morning.  Wednesday morning, with that incoming wind swell should be a good window for surf as things start off calm but get pretty gusty in the afternoon.  Interestingly, the winds look to be out of the SE for a good part of Thursday with gusty winds but mainly out of the SE.  There are a few choice spots in the county that will hold SE wind quite nicely.  Friday the winds turn a little more S and SW making for messier conditions as that wind swell peaks.  I think Thursday morning will have the best window for that swell…and perhaps Friday morning early before it gets REALLY gusty.  Luckily the water temps are remaining warm…low/mid 60s all around town.  Tides are making the swing a fair bit as we arrive at the New Moon tomorrow.  Negative dawn patrol tides push up to medium highs around midday and then back out to a medium low for the late afternoon session.

Looks like there will be a few windows of surf this week.  Catch them early before the winds get on the fun NW wind swell.
