Weather but then some fun surf for the weekend

Hujambo!  (That’s “hello” in Swahili)  Good day to you all.  We’re dancing on waves between storms this week.  We actually had a fairly nice day after the clouds dumped their contents early this morning.  Waves actually surfable at some of the more protected spots this evening.  Not huge but in the waist high range.  We’re looking at some long period SW ground swell over the next day (Thursday) but surf will really only hit the waist high range for this one.  By Friday we’ll see a little combo starting with some NW groundswell but filling in with a higher energy SW groundswell. Surf will pick up by midday from the knee high to waist high range.  We’re looking at the swell to peak early Saturday morning at about waist/chest high.  The good news is that as the storms become history a new long period (think juicy groundswell) WNW will fill in Sunday and the action really gets going.  Look for surf to jump into the HH+ range with this quick moving swell.  OH to kick off the day but peaking early and fading just as quickly as it showed up through the day.  Probably in the chest high range by sunset.  We’ll still see waist high surf for most of Monday and then short lived SW swell for Tuesday with waves in the waist/chest range especially at the better summer spots.  Looks like plenty of activity in both hemispheres with some potentially nice storms brewing down south.  If you’re heading to Mainland Mex or CR look for some nice healthy south swells over the next week.

Of course, rain and wind dominate the springtime line up.  Looks like Thursday will actually be fairly sunny BUT early overnight SW winds and light NW winds will put some texture on the water.  Looks like it’ll be the best conditions all day.  Winds will pickup out of the SW around mid/late morning.    Gusty SW winds all day and then into Thurs night as the next storm system moves in Friday.  Gusty winds and rain Friday…not a lot of rain but just windy with sprinkles here and there all day.  More wind and chances of showers Fri night.  Increasing sunshine for the weekend but cool air temps remain in the high 50s/low 60s.  Things warm up as we head into Monday and Tues with high 60s/low 70s along the coast.  Look for the most water movement from the dawn patrol to the morning negative low and then minimal movement through the day to the late afternoon high.  These S swells are starting to push some warmer water our way…water temps up a hair in the upper 50s.

Looks like a small window of surf in the morning with some lump on it and then we’ll have to wait til Saturday before things start to clean up!

And remember…don’t surf in POO!

Lates,
Mish

Get it early in the week...rain on the way!

Happy Easter All!  Ok, you’re probably reading this after Easter but I’d still like to wish everyone a Happy Easter.  I hope every had a sunny, ocean and bunny filled weekend!  Monday looks to kick off the week with a new SW swell with some nice direction (240°).  Size will increase from today’s knee/waist to waist/chest.  Size will remain about the same for Tuesday but by Tuesday afternoon we’ll see some NW wind swell mix in there as a storm system moves into town.  Look for increasing S winds by midday Tues turning NW by evening and westerly into Wed morning.  We’ll see the last of the SW in the waist/chest range for Wed and it’ll fade into Thursday morning.  Surf in the knee/waist range for the day and the first half of Friday.  Then we see a new SW swell in start to gain steam through the day Friday.  Unfortunately, we also see a new NW storm gain steam and plow into SoCal Friday as well bringing rain and more SW winds. Saturday looks to be a bit messy from wind but with some mixed up S swell and NW wind swell.  The saving grace is that things should clean up Sunday as a fairly nice looking WNW moves into down and surf bumps up into the HH/OH range.  Of course, that’s still over a week away so check back in in a few days and we’ll chat!

Considering how nice it’s been this winter and spring we really can’t complain when we get a day or two of showers.  Ok, yes, we will complain because it always seems to happen when the swells show up. And that’s the case again this week.  Looks like Monday and early Tuesday, although a little overcast in the morning till midday, will be our cleanest surf days  with calm conditions both mornings and moderate N winds picking up by midday.  By Tues midday we’re looking at some moderate NW winds as that storm moves in.  Look for some scattered showers possible before sunset but rain by midnight around most of the county and through the later afternoon Wed.    Winds look to be running out of the S for Thurs morning so expect a decent amount of bump on the water.  They’ll pick up through the day and into Thurs night and Fri.  Gusty Friday and into Sat.  Air temps won’t be much help either with high 50s the norm for the week except for tomorrow…mid 60s.  These S swells are starting to push a little more warm water our way with temps creeping up ever so slowly…every degree helps!  Some pretty good tide swings but mostly while we sleep (at least I’ll be asleep!).  Mild movement during the day although the dawn patrol will feel the effects of the negative low for the next few mornings.

Overall outlook is to get on this current SW swell Monday for the nicest conditions all week, Tuesday morning if you miss Monday and well, set your expectations low for the rest of the week and weekend due to weather.

That’s all for this entry…no ocean notes…this Easter Bunny is plum tuckered out!

Ciao!
Mish

Getting smaller but sunshine and warm temps for the weekend

Wuddup?  Looking at some fun and slightly cleaner surf today with waist/chest surf out of the WNW and some shoulder+ sets earlier in the day.  There’s a little steep background SW that might pulse thru every now and then.  Both swells are on the fade over the few days and thru the weekend.  Looks like waist/chest for Friday and then waist…maybe for Saturday and even smaller for early Sunday.  By late Sunday we should see some new SW arrive with inconsistent waves in the waist high range that evening and waist/chest by Monday morning.  Swell will last through Tues with chest high sets and backing down slightly to waist/chest for Wednesday.  Tuesday we’ll also see some shorter period NW swell which might be accompanied by some unfavorable SW winds.  Thursday looks like the SW will continue to fade with a potential NW swell for Fri and into Sat but more weather with that swell too.  Some nice activity going on down south with food potential for groundswell for the middle of next week.  Still a ways away though.  I’ll let you know this weekend.

Well, we saw some sunshine once those clouds (and horrendous N. Country traffic) burned off.  Look for N winds to blow al night tonight though so conditions tomorrow morning will probably be kind of chunky on what’s left of the NW swell.  More N winds Fri and into the evening but calming for Sat morning and even some E winds to clean things up overnight with light N winds for the dawn patrol turning SW through the day. Light to moderate N/NW breezes through Sun and into Monday. Monday morning looks nice and calm…probably the nicest window with swell for the next 7 days. Air temps are looking pretty nice for the weekend with mid60s Fri but sunshine and mid70s for Sat THRU Monday before cooling down again into the mid 60s Tues and then a chance of showers (basically clouds and SW winds) and cooler temps in the low 60s for Wed.  Looks like we might have showers for next weekend too.  Booooooo!  Lots of water moving with the gorgeous full moon tomorrow.  Big tides swinging with a high push mid-morning and going low mid-afternoon.  Luckily the biggest high/low swing is in the middle of the night.  Great for us surfers and all those little grunion who are spawning…but I digress.  Water temps are still pretty bone chilling in the mid/high 50s.

Let’s pray for surf AND warm water!  Hope the Easter Bunny brings everyone all the chocolate bunnies they can eat!  (I prefer dark chocolate in case you’re wondering.)

Have a happy Easter and enjoy the great weather…oh, and SLOW DOWN on the roads!

Adios!
Mish

Wave Faves

Here are some pics sent to me by fellow photographer Bradley Oliver. Bradley searched San Diego for some good clean surf to shoot yesterday and found these nuggets at...of all places...the Mission Bay CHANNEL...inside the jetties!  Between dodging set waves while standing on the jetty Brad snapped a few shots.  Drop me a line if you know the surfer!  Thanks for sharing Brad!

Smaller but still OH for Tuesday!

Rippin’ and shreddin’ all day long!  Well, if you made it out and didn’t mind a little lump on the water and a few bombers on the head you were rippin’ and shreddin’!  We’ve got a pretty juicy swell along the coast still with some well overhead surf today.  Conditions weren’t ideal to start the day with left over chop making things a little chunky but things cleaned up a bit over the course of the day and there was a few hours of decently clean waves and some nice lines to be had all over So Cal.  The swell peaked early early but we’re still looking at some HH/OH surf and really nice conditions for the Tuesday morning session.  The surf drops off quickly and we’re looking at slightly steeper chest high by nightfall.  Wednesday is looking in the waist/chest range with a hint of small S and a new WNW.  Surf picks up around town Thursday.  We’re looking at fairly consistent chest and maybe shoulder high range at the better winter breaks.  That swell peaks Thurs afternoon but sticks around Fri with chest high surf only to back off Sat with waist high by morning.  Down to knee/waist by evening with a few early arrivals from our next swell, a smaller SW ground swell for the start of next week.  Looks like a smaller NW ground swell right around the same time so we will hopefully have some fun peaky waves.  More to come…!

Our weather forecast is promising with more sunshine Tues, air temps in the low 70s and a lot less wind.  Some moderate afternoon winds but nothing crazy like we’ve been seeing.  Some patchy clouds mixing with our sunshine and cooling air temps after tomorrow for a few days but sunshine and air temps back into the low 70s for the weekend.  A little more wind in the afternoon as we approach the weekend but just the normal Spring breeze.  We’re looking at some fairly high and low tides as we approach Friday’s Full Moon.  Water temps still hanging on in that mid to barely upper 50s range.  Surf has been a cold Winter.  These early S swells should be pushing some warmer water our way…patience young Jedi!

That’s about all that’s in the books for now.
Later!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       If you happen to be out surfing in the moonlight on Saturday thru Tuesday nights you may observe an interesting phenomenon known as a grunion run!  These interesting little fish beach themselves during the higher tides at night to lay their eggs in the sand but only at beaches that have the perfect conditions.  If you see them you can only catch them if you have a fishing license and must catch them by hand.  You cannot use a new or bucket.  For more info on these cool creatures of the night click here:  http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/grunionschedule.asp#runs

2)      Ever been to Catalina?  Well, there’s not much surf BUT if it’s your birthday the island is chock full of great deals thru April 2013!  Check it out!  http://catalinaexpress.com/birthdayIsland.php

Macker (and wind) on the way!

Hola amigos!  The buoys are starting to show some long period SW swell so thing will be picking up. We actually had some pretty fun swell today and it was clean all day!  Tomorrow (Saturday) we’re looking at some inconsistent shoulder/HH surf to start the day.  Consistency and size will pick up through the day as the swell fills in and remains in the HH/OH range for Sunday morning. We’ll look for that WNW swell to fill in Sunday as well.   The biggest hiccup will be the weather with some fairly gusty winds looking to blow starting Sat night and through til Monday morning.  That’s going to make a mess of a really nice swell.  Things should really get rockin’ by midday Monday with some well over head sets and getting bigger quickly...no joke!  (April 1st!)  That swell is moving in and out quickly so by early Monday morning we’re looking at bombers coming through in the double overhead ++ range.  This swell will no only pack a punch but it’s gonna kick some serious a$$ too!  The swell peaks early Monday morning with size fading quickly through the day but we’re still looking at OH surf by sunset.  Tuesday will still have plenty of fun surf in the OH range to start and taper off to HH/shoulder high by nightfall.  By Wednesday we’ll all be able to rest up, lick our wounds and fix all the dings on our boards as we’ll see a new but much smaller SW swell in the waist/chest high range.  Looks like some short period WNW after that to end next week.  Wow, what a week of surf ahead!

Unfortunately the wind is going to make mincemeat out of the surf on Sunday.  While we should see some early AM fog and clearing skies with calm winds most of Saturday day a 30% chance of showers (so, 70% of no showers) and some gusty westerly winds will arrive Sat night.  Sunday is looking at sunny but gusty 15-25mph winds all day.  Such a bummer.  Winds should calm down a bit and will turn and blow out of the SE all night Sunday at about 5mph as we get light Santa Ana conditions.  Hopefully that will clean things up enough to make that macker swell surfable on Monday morning.  Wind will calm down by midday (and air temps in the high 60s) so we should see some decent and clean conditions for the midday/afternoon sessions.  A bit of westerly winds are forecasted for the evening session.  Tuesday looks to be a gorgeous day with sunshine and warm air temps (low 70s).  This will be the nicest day of the week.  Sunshine and some clouds Wed with a cool day Thurs before warming up again for the weekend. Tides are looking to be a factor as we approach the Full Moon at the end of the week.  High tide in the wee hours of the morning will race out to a near zero low tide by mid-morning which means even more water moving with that big swell.  Hope your paddling arms are up to the challenge!  Could see some pretty nice barrels Monday afternoon as things clean up and the tide drains out.  Can't wait to see the photos.

Be careful if you journey out Monday…be smart.  Surf safely.  Send me photos if you'd like to share them! (mishwoo@yahoo.com)

Lates!

Buoys are jumpin'! (just a quickie!)

Howdy!  Looks like the buoys are already starting to jump!  Some of you might have caught some fun waves this evening as things started to glass off and we started to see more groundswell and less wind swell.  Looks like we'll have some light NW winds tonight and then SW breezes super early so tomorrow's dawn patrol might have some bump on it before the winds turn ESE.  Surf looks like it should be pretty fun tomorrow with that WNW filling in all day.  Look for some waist/chest high waves around the county in the morning with shoulder/HH waves at the better winter spots.  There's a fair amount of west in this swell so most breaks will be picking up fun surf all day. Mild to moderate winds picking up by mid-afternoon. Doesn't look like it'll glass off in time for the evening session.  That S looks like fun for the weekend and that WNW for the start of next week is picking up steam and charging straight at us!  Hope none of you come down with the "flu" Monday!

Just dropping y'all a quick note...time to head out!

Later!
