Sun and small then more swell but rain and wind too.

Oookee dokee, well it looks like it’s gonna be on the smaller side for Saturday with waist high waves around town out of the NW.  We’ll see the rare chest high set in the southern half of the county at the better winter spots.  Sunday we should see a new little swell start to move in through the day with morning sessions looking at some waist/chest high waves and size picking up to chest high by the evening.   Monday we’re seeing a but more of this groundswell mixed in with some windswell from a weather front that will move through Tues/Wed.  Surf will kick off the week in the chest high range with some shoulder high sets late in the day.  Light to moderate south winds later in the day might be a factor for those later sessions.  Tuesday will see the swell peak with some chest high surf but south winds picking up at that weather system moves into town.  Both ground and wind swells drop off through the day.  A new WNW groundswell kicks in Wednesday (along with NW winds and rain all day) with size bumping back up into the chest high range overnight.  Size building slightly through the day…chest/shoulder high. 

Looks like a good sized wind swell is going to combo with that groundswell and be knocking down our door by Thursday morning.  This baby is heading due west at us so lots of closeouts at the west facing spots and beach breaks.  Size jumping up into the HH/OH range overnight so the early sessions will be seeing size immediately.  The big hiccup will be the SW winds that are forecasted to kick up Thurs and Fri as another weather system comes for a visit.  Darn those winds! More wind swell Fri and Sat with the lingering NW groundswell in the background.

Ah yes, the weather.  With the 80 degree sunshine and offshore winds tomorrow you’d never know our week will be fraught with dense fog on Sat night/Sun as the weather turns then chances of drizzle Monday night, Tuesday and most likely Wed.  The more clouds as another little system rolls through and a slight chance of showers for the end of the week.  Saturday is looking like a typical Santa Ana day…offshore, sunny and warm then Sunday we’ll see much cooler air temps (mid60s), patchy fog, and the start of our weeks worth of S winds.  Some clouds Monday with air temps in the high50s. Air temps in the mid to high 50s for the rest of the week as those storms roll though…cold storm and with enough winds to be annoying.  We’re mid-moon phase right now so tides aren’t doing anything radical.  We’re seeing the early morning medium low move up ever so slightly to a medium high early afternoon and ease it’s way back down after sunset.  Water temps are still a little chilly but nice if there’s sunshine and dry offshores.

If the winds cooperate Thursday could be fun…if not, it could be a washing machine out there.  Enjoy the sunshine while we have it!

1)      In case you hadn’t heard a 10 ton meteorite!  buzzed through out atmosphere today over in Russia and it’s wasn’t exactly just a brilliant show…as 1200 folks are injured, mostly from shattered glass as the shock-wave hit!  You have to see it to believe it!  There are a bunch of videos on this page.  Can you say “kryptonite” boys and girls?

Did I mention it was small...?

This is an easy one.  The surf was small.   The surf is small.  The surf will stay small through most of next week.  We’re looking at super steep SW passing us by but really not much of anything anyway.  Mostly small NW wind swell on the books for this weekend and most of next week.  Surf in the waist high range at best over the next 5-6 days.  A moderate SW groundswell looks like it should hit late next week for the weekend.  Will give you the 411 as it gets closer but it’s looking good for next weekend.

Weather wise…it was sunny and humid.  It is sunny and humid.  It will continue to be sunny and humid.  LOL…no really, it’ll stay just about the same but with air temps plummeting down into the low 70s (brrrrrrrrrrrrr) for the weekend before picking up again next Monday.  Calm in the morning’s with light to moderate winds by midday.  Patchy clouds for the early AM and sunset sessions.  Water temps still in the low to mid 70s.  Still seeing some mild water movement in the morning but a big drop for the evening session as the tide drains out to a late night low.  Starting to see some bigger swings through next week as we move towards next Friday’s Full Moon.

Macker (and wind) on the way!

Hola amigos!  The buoys are starting to show some long period SW swell so thing will be picking up. We actually had some pretty fun swell today and it was clean all day!  Tomorrow (Saturday) we’re looking at some inconsistent shoulder/HH surf to start the day.  Consistency and size will pick up through the day as the swell fills in and remains in the HH/OH range for Sunday morning. We’ll look for that WNW swell to fill in Sunday as well.   The biggest hiccup will be the weather with some fairly gusty winds looking to blow starting Sat night and through til Monday morning.  That’s going to make a mess of a really nice swell.  Things should really get rockin’ by midday Monday with some well over head sets and getting bigger quickly...no joke!  (April 1^st!)  That swell is moving in and out quickly so by early Monday morning we’re looking at bombers coming through in the double overhead ++ range.  This swell will no only pack a punch but it’s gonna kick some serious a$$ too!  The swell peaks early Monday morning with size fading quickly through the day but we’re still looking at OH surf by sunset.  Tuesday will still have plenty of fun surf in the OH range to start and taper off to HH/shoulder high by nightfall.  By Wednesday we’ll all be able to rest up, lick our wounds and fix all the dings on our boards as we’ll see a new but much smaller SW swell in the waist/chest high range.  Looks like some short period WNW after that to end next week.  Wow, what a week of surf ahead!

Unfortunately the wind is going to make mincemeat out of the surf on Sunday.  While we should see some early AM fog and clearing skies with calm winds most of Saturday day a 30% chance of showers (so, 70% of no showers) and some gusty westerly winds will arrive Sat night.  Sunday is looking at sunny but gusty 15-25mph winds all day.  Such a bummer.  Winds should calm down a bit and will turn and blow out of the SE all night Sunday at about 5mph as we get light Santa Ana conditions.  Hopefully that will clean things up enough to make that macker swell surfable on Monday morning.  Wind will calm down by midday (and air temps in the high 60s) so we should see some decent and clean conditions for the midday/afternoon sessions.  A bit of westerly winds are forecasted for the evening session.  Tuesday looks to be a gorgeous day with sunshine and warm air temps (low 70s).  This will be the nicest day of the week.  Sunshine and some clouds Wed with a cool day Thurs before warming up again for the weekend. Tides are looking to be a factor as we approach the Full Moon at the end of the week.  High tide in the wee hours of the morning will race out to a near zero low tide by mid-morning which means even more water moving with that big swell.  Hope your paddling arms are up to the challenge!  Could see some pretty nice barrels Monday afternoon as things clean up and the tide drains out.  Can't wait to see the photos.
