SW filling in with some fun surf!

Ah, SW swell…you are so elusive…unless you know some good south facing beaches…then you’re stoked.  This swell has a bit more steepness in it than I thought it would so many spots aren’t seeing a lot of swell but the best south facing summer spots are finally seeing some fun waist/chest high surf this afternoon.  Tuesday looks like more swell but from about the same angle but more consistency.  Look for waist/chest and some shoulder high surf at the better summer spots around SD County again and the swell peaks in the midmorning.  Some stand out head high sets at best.  Throw a little NW wind swell in there to add a little lumpiness into the action.  Things will start to fade out in the evening and Wed surf will back down to waist/chest with waist and the occasional chest high set for Thurs.  Friday looks like thigh to waist high and only some knee to waist high local windswell for the weekend.  We might see some long period SW with much better direction squeak through over the weekend but it really won’t fill in until later in the week with yet another SW behind that.  The size on both are still questionable with the second swell looking slightly more promising.  Stay tuned!

Weather wise we’re looking at more clearing tomorrow and Wed compared to the past few days of overcast muggy weather.  That just means it’ll be sunny and muggy as the humidity will stick around for at least 3-4 more days.  Winds will be light at night so glassy morning surf should prevail.  Moderate onshores for the afternoon without much glass off for the evening sessions.  Tides will definitely be a factor as we’re still seeing some pretty low tides pushing up to a medium high tide midday and then zipping back out to a medium low y sunset.  Water temps are pretty darn nice right now especially if you’re surfing midday when the sun pokes out!  We’re looking at high 60s and low 70s all around town.

I think that does it for me…look for some fun mid-morning and late afternoon/evening steep south swell tomorrow and Wed.

Adios amigos!
Mish

Here comes some SW swell!

Howdy ho!  Things are starting to look up!  We had a might quiet holiday week as far as surf is concerned.  We’re already starting to see the 18second swell on the buoys out of the SW so I’m expecting super inconsistent waist high surf building during the negative low tide Friday morning.  Surf over the next few days will be very tide dependant.  Look for chest high surf by midday with some shoulder high sets at the better S facing beaches.  The swell fills in a bit more Saturday with more consistent shoulder high surf and HH sets…carrying on into Sunday morning and then starting to taper off in the afternoon.  We’ll still see some chest high surf by Monday morning but winds might be an issue for Monday.  Surf drops off Tues as we see a little wind swell and waist high surf thru Wed.  There’s another S aimed our way but I think it’s really going right past us as it’s angled all wrong for our swell window.  There’s a nice Tropical Storm Daniel that’s spinning off the tip of Baja but it’s aimed at Hawaii and not looking like it’s going to head our way any time soon.

Well, the 4th of July was a BUST (as were some of the fireworks!) in terms of beach weather but things look like they’ll pick up for the weekend.  We’re still looking at patchy morning fog and clouds through the middle of the day but the professional forecasters say we should see the sun.  I’ll believe it when I see it!  Look for a slight warming trend through the weekend with high 60s going up into the low 70s through the weekend and into next week.  Sunday and Mondays looks like the nicest days of the 5-day forecast.  As far as winds are concerned we’re looking at calm mornings.  We should lose this S wind Friday.  Expect some moderate West wind Fri and N winds by midday Sat.  At least they should help blow the clouds away (does it work that way?).  Water temps are nice…should be nicer after this next S swell…mid 60s up and down the coast.  Still some big tide swings as we come off the full moon this past Tuesday.  The morning’s are pretty drained out with medium tide swings midday and then a nice little push for the evening session (but winds might be an issue).

Well, patience pays off…surf is on its way!

Hope you all had a relaxing 4th of July and are ready to get your surf on!

Lates,
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       Wanna go fast but stay green?  Well, on July 8th the carbon fiber Tesla electric motorcycle, Roskva, will be unveiled!  0-100kph in 4 seconds AND it only weighs 67 lbs!  Pretty sweet!  Funny though, they don’t mention the price in the article!

2)      Got a huge hunk of watermelon left in your fridge from the 4th of July?  Well, what are you waiting for…blend that baby and make some icy cold libations this weekend after a long surf session!  I discovered a watermelon mojito…blended watermelon with mint, a bit of mango juice (instead of simple sugar) and an ice cube or two…oh, and rum!  VOILA!  Here are some more watermelon delights to try this summer!

3)      More fun beach activity…does it ever end?  The Vigilucci’s Beach Bocce World Championship XXXII is this Saturday at the Dog Beach in Del Mar.  You KNOW you don’t want to miss this!

4)      With a lot of you packing up and head to destinations unknown this might be just the article you need before you zip up your board bag and head out the door.  This great article from Surfer Mag talks about how to deal with some of the more common types of surf ailments  while on the road. Everything from urchin spines to jellyfish stings.

5)      And now for something completely surfy!  Yes…Teahupoo was going off AGAIN.  I don’t know about you but for me it never gets old seeing pics of this place CRANKIN!

6)      And here’s a nice clip I stumbled upon on You Tube…Greg Noll from the movie Riding Giants and his infamous Waimea wave!  It’s a good one to watch…this is where it started! (well for da’ kine haoles anyway!)
