SW filling in with some fun surf!

Ah, SW swell…you are so elusive…unless you know some good south facing beaches…then you’re stoked.  This swell has a bit more steepness in it than I thought it would so many spots aren’t seeing a lot of swell but the best south facing summer spots are finally seeing some fun waist/chest high surf this afternoon.  Tuesday looks like more swell but from about the same angle but more consistency.  Look for waist/chest and some shoulder high surf at the better summer spots around SD County again and the swell peaks in the midmorning.  Some stand out head high sets at best.  Throw a little NW wind swell in there to add a little lumpiness into the action.  Things will start to fade out in the evening and Wed surf will back down to waist/chest with waist and the occasional chest high set for Thurs.  Friday looks like thigh to waist high and only some knee to waist high local windswell for the weekend.  We might see some long period SW with much better direction squeak through over the weekend but it really won’t fill in until later in the week with yet another SW behind that.  The size on both are still questionable with the second swell looking slightly more promising.  Stay tuned!

Weather wise we’re looking at more clearing tomorrow and Wed compared to the past few days of overcast muggy weather.  That just means it’ll be sunny and muggy as the humidity will stick around for at least 3-4 more days.  Winds will be light at night so glassy morning surf should prevail.  Moderate onshores for the afternoon without much glass off for the evening sessions.  Tides will definitely be a factor as we’re still seeing some pretty low tides pushing up to a medium high tide midday and then zipping back out to a medium low y sunset.  Water temps are pretty darn nice right now especially if you’re surfing midday when the sun pokes out!  We’re looking at high 60s and low 70s all around town.

I think that does it for me…look for some fun mid-morning and late afternoon/evening steep south swell tomorrow and Wed.

Adios amigos!
Mish

Quiet at first but some weekend fun!

Helloooooooooooooooooo SoCal!  Did I mention I went out of town?  I think I forgot…sorry.  Anyway, looks like we’ve got some combo swell on the buoys right now…some pretty steep south from the Southern Hemi AND from formerly known as “Hurricane”…now Tropical Storm Faaaaaaaaaaabio.  Most of the swell is flying past SD County with barely any of it making it into even the best summertime spots.  More of the same for Tuesday with maybe a hint of swell of Faaaaaaaaaaaaabio (sorry, I just can’t help myself) as he make a slight turn in our direction but weakens as he heads north.  I’m hoping we’ll see at least some waist high surf by late Tues and into Wed from him before he totally poops out and just brings us humidity and some thundershowers.  Thursday is looking pretty small (with maybe some Faaaaaaaaaaaaabio swell) as is Friday and Saturday with knee high surf at best as we roll into the weekend.  Now late Saturday we should start to see some decent and painfully inconsistent waist high surf out of the S as our next swell starts to show up.  A medium sized SW ground swell will fill in for Sunday with waist/chest high surf and some shoulder high nuggets at the better summer spots.  Swell holds and builds a smidge for Monday and into Tuesday before it starts to fade.  So, just hang in there for the weekend (don’t we always!) and you should be rewarded for your patience come Funday Sunday!

Weather wise we’re looking at more early clouds through Wed with midday clearing and some nice temps in the low 70s.  Thursday things should clear up nicely with slightly warmer temps in the mid-70s…probably the nicest day all week and then slide back into the early AM/late PM cloud-cover and midday clearing pattern for the weekend.  Light SE winds tonight becoming west for tomorrow afternoon.  Some NW winds for Wed and Thursday as well.  Water temps are still pretty nice with mid to upper 60s all along the coast.  Tides are a bit more extreme this week with the New Moon on Thurs.  The biggest tide swing is happening through the night though so the tide swings midday are decent but with no swell, well, it’s hard to say what would be best.  Just go paddle!

Looking forward to the weekend already!

I’m out!

Ocean notes:
1)       Surfrider has had some great ads that really make a point.  Check out this one with a cute little panda bear!

2)      Ok, after watching this surfer chick video you’re gonna wish you surfed like a chick…unless you already are one!  SCH-WACK!

3)      “Perfect cold right point break…”  No, I’m not talking about Swamis (insert hysterical laughter) I’m talking about J-Bay.  It’s rocking again and Surfer Mag has some sweet shots of the latest grindage off the point as well as some awesome contest coverage from Surfline. Need you look any further?

4)      WHOA…CONGRATS to Steph Gilmore for Numbah 5!  World titles that is!  She said she had to give it 200 percent in every heat.  Check out these pics...I'll say she did!  And what a place to win…Biarritz…where the champagne really IS champagne!
