Fading NW but big bigger waves on the way!

Happy Holidays!  Yes, I can’t believe I’m saying that either.  Luckily, with the holidays has come some surf.  We had a few days of some fun and finally sizable surf.  Good thing no one else knew about it eh?  Well, Saturday we’ll see the tail end of that NW groundswell with just waist and the occasional chest high wave around the winter beaches.  The SW is lingering as well but it’s really not much of a factor with a knee/waist high wave on occasion.  Sunday we should see a little hiccup of NW swell keeping things in the waist/chest high range and then things taper off for Monday and Tuesday with knee to waist high surf and a hint of SW in the background.  By Wednesday we’ll see a short burst of NW to bump things up a hair…waist high I’m thinking.  The big news is next WNW groundswell. The models have this storm forming very quickly and becoming very big but also dropping down into our neighborhood.  That means midday Thursday we should see the swell pick up rapidly with foul weather close on its heels as surf jumps into the shoulder high range by evening..  The timing will be crucial for surf conditions.  Looks like Friday will be the best day with S winds but surf hitting the HH/OH+ range early and building throughout the day.  Saturday is looking like a big surf day…the models show significant rain but we’ll have to see how this storm develops.  Oh, and if you happen to be heading to the Hawaiian Island…this swell is gonna ROCK THE HOUSE!  Triple Crown Action for sure!

Weather wise our immediate hassle is the dense fog for the dawn patrol.  Looks really thick until about 10am and then again for that evening session.  That should be the case through Tuesday.  Midday we will see clouds and light winds.  Wed we see a chance of drizzle but Thursday is when the clouds start to move in and Friday our chance of showers increase.  Forecasters are calling Saturday and Sunday as rain days.  Light SSW winds so at the right spot that could mean some pretty awesome surf.  Again, I’ll have to track that storm and see if it stays on track and lives up to the hype.  We know how things can change!  Water temps in the high 50s/low 60s.  Tides are starting to get a bit extreme as we see an early high tide slowing down the foggy dawn patrol and things draining out midday.  Those extreme tides will also play a big role in conditions as that new NW arrives for the end of next week.

Looks like this weekend was just a warm up!  Wooohooooooooo…winter swell is on its way! (keep your fingers and toes crossed!)

I’m all tuckered out from good food and fun surf!  Hope you are too!

I’m out!

SW filling in with some fun surf!

Ah, SW swell…you are so elusive…unless you know some good south facing beaches…then you’re stoked.  This swell has a bit more steepness in it than I thought it would so many spots aren’t seeing a lot of swell but the best south facing summer spots are finally seeing some fun waist/chest high surf this afternoon.  Tuesday looks like more swell but from about the same angle but more consistency.  Look for waist/chest and some shoulder high surf at the better summer spots around SD County again and the swell peaks in the midmorning.  Some stand out head high sets at best.  Throw a little NW wind swell in there to add a little lumpiness into the action.  Things will start to fade out in the evening and Wed surf will back down to waist/chest with waist and the occasional chest high set for Thurs.  Friday looks like thigh to waist high and only some knee to waist high local windswell for the weekend.  We might see some long period SW with much better direction squeak through over the weekend but it really won’t fill in until later in the week with yet another SW behind that.  The size on both are still questionable with the second swell looking slightly more promising.  Stay tuned!

Weather wise we’re looking at more clearing tomorrow and Wed compared to the past few days of overcast muggy weather.  That just means it’ll be sunny and muggy as the humidity will stick around for at least 3-4 more days.  Winds will be light at night so glassy morning surf should prevail.  Moderate onshores for the afternoon without much glass off for the evening sessions.  Tides will definitely be a factor as we’re still seeing some pretty low tides pushing up to a medium high tide midday and then zipping back out to a medium low y sunset.  Water temps are pretty darn nice right now especially if you’re surfing midday when the sun pokes out!  We’re looking at high 60s and low 70s all around town.

I think that does it for me…look for some fun mid-morning and late afternoon/evening steep south swell tomorrow and Wed.

Adios amigos!
Mish

Waist/chest surf and sunny skies!

Hola hola ayyyyyyyyyy!  Ah, SoCal comes through again and we kick off the week with clean glassy (small) surf with 70 degree air (let’s not talk about how cold the water is just yet!).  We’ll we’re looking at some small/medium sized SW groundswell filling in on the buoys today and tomorrow (Tuesday).  Inconsistent surf in the waist/chest high range with slightly larger sets at the summer spots.  Between sets is pretty quiet and calm though.  Look for surf to taper off a little after it peaks tomorrow early early.  Waist high for Wednesday before the next little WNW moves in early Thursday.  That swell should bump the surf back up into the waist and occasional chest high range for the day with the swell peaking in the early evening.  Fading surf Friday, back down into the knee/waist high range.  We’ll start to see some small long period SW swell late Friday and through Sat.  Surf really only getting back into the waist/chest range…best of course at the better summer spots since the angle of the swell is a little steep.  Then some small NW trickles in Sunday…and I mean, TRICKLES…for a few days as both hemispheres take a little break for the first part of next week.  Don’t fret though, it looks like we have some pretty nice SW groundswell gearing up down there.  It should make some goofy footers very happy as the summer spots start to wake up and those sand bars start doing their thing.

Well, as Murphy’s Law would have it we’re looking at pretty nice weather this week with clear skies to start the day tomorrow and air temps in the high 60s and low 70s along the coast.  Light winds all day as well. A bit of marine layer Wed early AM and late PM with sunshine and slightly cooler temps (mid60s) midday.  Similar Thursday and then a nice warm up for the end of the week and into the weekend with low/mid 70s and clear skies. Light winds all week with no crazy low pressure systems to get things blowing.  Water temps are still pretty darn chilly with mid50s the norm along most of the coast. Bring all the rubber to the beach...it's COLD!  Tides are starting  to swing a little more as we near Saturday’s New Moon but most of the crazy swings happen overnight with some moderate water movement from the early morning high to the near zero low in the early afternoon.

Looks like some fun surf with sunny skies!  Enjoy the week!

Aloooooooooha!
