Weather and WNW swell to end the week

(I'm heading out of town from Oct. 11-16th so I'll be back bloggin' next Wed...unless I decide to post from the beach on my vacation...)

 

All sorts of activity going on as we swing from Summer to Fall and back again.  After a few nice SW swells it looks like Mother Nature is tossing us another small WNW groundswell.  You might have heard about the North Shores of the Hawaiian Islands the past few days (see Ocean Notes)…it was CRAN-KING!  The swell isn’t really directed at us but we’re still going to benefit from the leftovers.  We’re already seeing the buoys increasing.  Surf should pick up to waist/chest high for Thursday morning with some slightly better waves at the winter North facing beaches but expect some unfavorable weather to put a bit of bump overnight on the surface.  The swell will hold up through Fri, Sat and Sun with surf in the chest/shoulder range.  Weather and wind will be the biggest factor Fri and Sat. By Sun things should clean up and surf looks pretty nice.  The swell fades Monday with a little pick-me-up from some small SW. Surf in the waist/chest range but slightly better at summer beaches.  That’ll be a short and small swell but we’re expecting another medium NW groundswell for Tues of next week with size at west and north facing beaches back into the waist/chest range with some fun shoulder high sets.  Swell holds for Wed as the swell peaks with some nice chest/shoulder high surf.  Kinda quiet after that with what looks like some smaller NW and a small late SW swell developing. 

We’ve got our first weather maker coming to town tonight with moderate S winds tonight making things a little lumpy in the morning and for most of the day.   Looks like a nice window of light winds in the early hours of the day before winds pickup more out of the S.  Sustaining S winds for most of Thurs night and through Fri and pretty gusty for Sat.  And then we have the rain.  The latest models are actually looking more favorable with about a 0.25” along the coast for the day starting overnight and kind of just drizzling all day.  Definiletly some colder air temps (mid-60s) than we’ve had lately and snow…yes, snow levels to 7000’.  Showers should taper off by Friday dawn with some left over clouds  but then  expect sunshine for the windy Sat and a pretty gorgeous day Sunday and air temps back into the mid 70s.  Big high pressure brings sunshine and high 70s back to town for the first half of the week.  Still some cooler nights though to remind you that it’s Fall.  Some big tide swings as we approach Monday’s New Moon.  Look for fuller morning highs to slow things down a bit and negative lows to really drain out the beach breaks by Sunday.  Water temps still in the low 70s/high 60s.  Expect that to cool down with the NW swells that are moving in.  Yup, time for a full suit!

Looking like some fun surf if you can find a nice window between wind and rain but better conditions for the second half of the weekend.  Surf Sunday…Charger’s aren’t on til Monday!

Ocean Notes:

1)       One word: PEAHI! (translation: JAWS!)  This is some of the most gorgeous and perfect HUGE surf I've ever seen!  The video will leave you in awe!  Watch Shane Dorian rock the house with a mammoth sized barrel yesterday.

2)      With the rainy season upon I’ll remind everyone not to surf in poo!  This storm will be the FIRST FLUSH.  Yes, it’s as bad as it sounds.  Check out Coast Keeper’s County Beach Status website.  And watch the water around Ponto.  9000 gallons of sewage spilled there two days ago…POOPY WATER!!!!!!!!! That’s just gonna get flushed out even more as it rains.  Be mindful!

3)      The newest high profile surf flick to hit the theaters later this month is getting some pretty good reviews. Check out the trailer for Chasing Mavericks , the story of Jay Moriarty and his passion for a well know deadly surf spot.

Fading swells, a little weather and then new WNW!

Jeepers!  We’ve had a nice stretch of surf but things are starting to poop out!  With some lingering NW wind and groundswell and fading SW groundswell it looks like surf is going to be in the waist/chest high range for Monday and taper off into the waist high range for Tues and even less for Wed.  Good news is that we should see a long period WNW groundswell start to fill in late Wed and into Thursday.  The bad news is that some ugly weather might mess it up.  This swell is really aimed a bit south of us (pay attention Islanders!)…of all things…but we’ll still see some waist/chest high surf.  This swell should build Fri and be joined by some straight W swell for surf in the waist/chest high range.  Looks to be a bit closed out around most of SD with so much west in it but we’re not gonna complain about WNW groundswell now are we?  These swells will stick around through next weekend with chest high surf for most of the weekend with the occasional shoulder high stand out set.  There’s not much activity in the S.  A smaller storm looks to peek out from behind New Zealand but at this point the majority of the swell doesn’t look like it’ll produce much as it moves into our window.

Weather is starting to be the attention getter as we move into “rainy season” (yes, technically it’s “rainy season” now!).  With that we actually will have some low pressure moving to SoCal and not only will air temps cool down into the mid to low 60s by the end of the week but there’s increasing clouds and a chance of showers by Wed/Thurs.  This of course also means a fluctuating mess of NW and SW winds over the course of the week.  I’m not expecting anything horrific but just enough to put some junk on the normally clean surface.  Things will warm back up into the high 70s by the first part of next week.  This little system will just remind of what’s in store so we can stop complaining about warm weather.   Water temps are inching down as well with high 60s dominating and the occasional low 70s here and there mostly in the N. County region.  We’re still seeing very little movement in the tides during daylight hours but we’ll start seeing much more movement by Thurs and into the weekend. 

Looks like Monday and Tues and then the weekend will be your best bet for surf.  I’m calling Saturday as the best day of the week at this point.

Fading steep SW, smaller SW and NW on tap

Aloha!  Some fading steeper SW swell for the Friday session in the waist high range at most spots but some chest high waves at the better summer spots.  Swell fades even more Sat with some NW wind swell on top of the small fading S.  A bit of low pressure will make it down our way on Monday bringing more NW wind swell with some background small S. Waves in the waist/chest high range but a little messy I’m thinking with the wind swell dominating. Mostly NW wind swell in the waist high range for Tues and Wed. South Pacific is showing signs of some groundswell development but we don’t see it for at least a week or so.  The big story is the NW ground swell that looks to show up around Thurs/Fri. Looks like some good energy with plenty of west in it to make for some fun sessions throughout SoCal!

Weather is definitely turning towards Fall as temperatures start to cool down into the low 70s along the coast, some moderate morning and late evening marine layer and cooler nighttime sleeping temps in the mid to low 60s.  We should still see sunshine midday though.  There’s a slight chance of drizzle late Monday and into Tuesday.  Calm morning breeze turning E early and then SW by the afternoon.  This will definitely put some bump on most spots mixing with that NW wind swell.  More westerly winds by Monday.  Water temps are in the high 60s/low 70s with the southern half of the county seeing the colder end of the spectrum.  Tides aren’t doing much through the weekend with little or no movement as we’re mid-moon cycle. 

Still looks like some fun but smaller surf out there.  Definitely have to pick your spots a little better but water’s still pretty warm and the sun’s still shining!

1)       The big event is HERE this weekend!  From the creator of Sacred Craft it’s The Boardroom!  Saturday and Sunday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is everything you ever needed to know or see that’s related to surfboards!  This year’s show is a tribute to the legendary Mark Richards. There’s everything from surfboard shaping legends, new school shapers, live shaping demos, auctions, movies, and food!  On Sunday morning at Power House park in Del Mar you can even demo boards, wetsuits and fins from 7am –noon.  This is THE place to be this weekend!

2)      If you’re interested in putting solar in your house why not check out SDG&E’s free seminars later this month.  There’s one for solar water heaters and another for solar systems in general.  They’re continually rolling out helpful seminars for home and businesses.  And, uh…FREE!

3)      With the spooky Halloweek season upon us I can’t help but mention some of the fun events around town.  If you don’t already know about the Bates Nut Farm then you’re missing out!  This place is Halloween and Fall celebration in…well, a nutshell! Pumpkins from 40-200lbs are just the start.  Check out their link for more info on all their fun events!

4)      And now for something a little more surfy surfy!  The Quicksilver Pro is going OFF in France right now with insane waves being ridden by the world’s best.  You know who I’m talking about…THE BEST in awesome waves.  Check out the pics from Day Four.  Sweetness!

5)      And I will end with this beautiful composite of gorgeous waves from around our planet this past September.  We need to keep our planet healthy and our oceans clean so we can continue to enjoy waves like this.  (sigh)

More and more and more swell...

Salutations surfers!  Lots of surf this week with more on the way. We’re seeing the tail end of the NW wind swell and the WSW.  With waist/chest high surf for Tues morning we’re going to see some more SW groundswell by midday.  Looks like surf will bump up again into the chest/shoulder + range especially at the south facing beaches.  Things taper off slightly for Wed with waist/chest and shoulder high sets but Mother Nature is trying to make up for a flat summer and we’re expecting more SW groundswell for Thursday.  Look for some significant swell to start showing late Wed with some shoulder/HH (and VERY inconsistent) surf on tap for Thurs.  Plenty of swell for Thurs peaking and becoming more consistent Friday with swell tapering off into the waist/chest range with shoulder high sets.  Plenty of west in all of these swells to deliver some fun surf to most beaches.  Saturday sees a bit less surf with waist/chest surf and then some WNW swell for the Sunday.  Next week it looks like yet ANOTHER SW swell mixed in with that WNW but so much more surf on tap if everything keeps on track. Heck, there’s even some potential for more hurricane swell!  Keep in touch…lots more surf on the way!

Looking at dense fog for Tues AM before the day has a chance to heat up.  Then things get HOT HOT HOT again and Santa Ana conditions set up with light easterly winds all day.  Wed and the rest of the week remain warm but cool off slightly as the Santa Ana breaks down.  Low 70s by the weekend and patchy early AM and late PM marine layer.  The best part is cool sleeping temps…YEH!  Water temps have dropped a degree or two…still in the high 60s and 70 degree range.  Still some big tide swings from the mid-AM super high to the drained out evening low. 

Still loads of super fun surf to be had this week!

WSW surf's UP!

Super quickie…update for full week tomorrow.  We’re looking at plenty of new swell for Sunday.  That new WSW is filling in nicely with some really fun waves Saturday in the chest/shoulder range and some HH sets by sundown.  Things are a little bumpy with the cross up of NW wind swell on top of the inconsistent S but that should get better Sunday and Monday.  Sunday will start off with some shoulder/HH sets with some OH sets at the better summer spots but there’s enough west in it to rally give most spots some fun surf.  A little closed out even in some of the summer spots…kinda lined up ya’ know!  Swell peaks late Sunday but still shoulder high surf for Monday dropping off to chest/shoulder for Tuesday.  I’ll get into the rest of the week tomorrow in a more lengthy report.  But rest assured…there’s plenty of S to go around this week! (cough…be sick Thursday)

Plenty more heat and sunshine with clear skies for Sun and Mon.  Light winds all day. We’re looking at some pretty extreme tides though with a big high around 10am Sunday morning.  With the swell push though it could be really fun on the sets…juicy waves with the big push…although some spots might get swamped out.  The low is at 4pm…near 0’ so some of the beach breaks might be a bit walled out and racy. About the same for Monday.  Water temps holding in the high 60s and low 70s.

Hit the surf in the morning...super fun (and probably a wee bit crowded too!)

More Miriam swell and new WSW groundswell!

Surf’s up!  That first NW groundswell made a lot of people very happy in SD County!  We’re looking at the tail end of that swell for Thurs combo’d with some relaxed Hurricane Miriam swell that’s missing most of SD because she took a steeper turn N before starting to poop out. Surf Thurs should be in the waist/chest range with some bigger sets at the better N. County south facing beaches.  Friday we’ll see a little hiccup from Miriam as she throws a bit more swell our direction (but again, missing a lot of SD County).  The good news is that we’re going to see the start of a nice WSW groundswell that should send surf to most of SD starting with super inconsistent waves in the waist/chest range late Fri.  By Saturday we should see more surf in the chest/shoulder range and then, as the swell peaks Sunday morning we’ll have some nice shoulder/HH surf throughout town with the better HH+ sets coming in at the better summer spots.  The jet stream looks like it’s dipping south and could throw some shorter period NW swell our way Sunday to mix in with that S swell.  South swell surf holds into Monday as we welcome October with some fun chest/shoulder high surf.  Another WSW groundswell makes an appearance Tuesday with more of the same chest/shoulder high surf with some HH/+ sets at the best summer spots. 

Some funky weather on the way with plenty of warmth but early morning fog for the rest of the week and into the weekend, some clouds Thurs and Fri with a slight chance of sprinkles Friday.  Light east winds Thurs AM turning light to moderate out of the west.  Hurricane Miriam is breaking up and will probably drag a lot of moisture (humidity) our way as her leftovers head north over Baja over the next few days.  Then, by Sun and for the first half of next week we’ll see some Santa Ana like conditions as we see a high pressure system set up and we have some nice offshores and sunny hot (80s again!) days.  Water temps are in the low 70s in N. County with some cooler high 60s south of LJ.  That steep SE hurricane swell will push water offshore bringing the cooler water to the surface.  That upcoming WSW should help warm things up again.  Tides are going to really be cruising as we have a Full Moon Sunday.  Look for the dawn patrol to see a little push from the big high tide before things slow down and then bottom out in the mid-afternoon before swinging around for a sunset session tide push.

I’m thinking Monday or Tuesday next week would be an optimal day to be (cough cough) sick.

Ocean Notes:

1)       Haiti is banning plastic bags and foam products?  Yup, they’re going to try at least!  If they can do it why can’t we?

2)      Time to get those winter suits ready for double session cold water action!  Drag it out of the closet and head on over to the Swell Stuff in their new location just a few blocks south of their old location in Leucadia, 948 N Coast Hwy 101.  And you can pick up a slightly used full suit for a dry (and warm) second session, a super warm handmade beanie or really super cool Cinch Sac to change on and keep that wetsuit clean and your car dry!

3)      Gotta give the groms some love…the Oakley Pro happens next weekend in Indo!  Wow, if they had these contests when I was a grom I might have at least tried to go pro!  LOL! Check out the preview for the World Junior Championship  and see who’s going to be challenging Slater when he goes for #15 or #16 in a few years!

4)      Oui oui…it’s time again to be heading to Ze Souse of France for some killer waves.  Here’s some nice footage of fun French beach break.
