Plenty more good surf on the way!

Oh boy…what a few days it’s been.  Surf is up. Crowds are up…and unfortunately attitudes are up too!  There were a lot of folks jawing for waves out there this week. Hopefully you all had some fun ones!  There’s plenty more where that came from!  Friday morning we’re looking at slightly smaller surf to star the day.  By small I chest to shoulder high through the morning.  Buoy reading show that we should see some VERY INCONSISTENT bigger sets in the morning but the real stuff will pick up later in the afternoon.  By sunset we’ll see waves in the HH to OH+ with the bigger waves in the southern half of the county and at the winter wave magnet spots.  Saturday morning we’re going to wake up to some OH to OH++ around most of San Diego.  Expect some DOH sets at the best winter breaks. The swell peaks mid-morning and then tapers off to HH/OH by nightfall but still packing a punch.  The jet stream whisks that storm to the north pretty quickly so size will back down Sunday.  Look for the HH/OH first thing in the morning with some decent consistency and shoulder/HH with HH+ sets by nightfall. 

There’s another smaller WNW swell for Monday.  Waves start in the shoulder/HH range and then the swell starts to fill in mid-morning.  Swell peaks midday with HH+ sets and with lots of west in this swell most of SD County will see plenty of fun surf all day.  Size backs off Tuesday morning with shoulder/chest high surf for most of the day.  The next WNW fills in right after that for Wednesday with waves bumping back up into the HH/slightly OH range by midday as that swell peaks and then backs off again.  Not a lot of major activity in the northern hemi after that.  A few smaller storms but definitely much calmer than this week. 

We’re looking at some pretty dense morning fog for the next two mornings and slightly cooler air temps in the high 60s/low 70s along the coast.  A bit more clearing for the weekend with air temps in the low 70s but warming up into the high 70s and sunny by Tuesday thru Thursday.  Friday looks pretty cloudy with a wee chance of moisture but I wouldn’t put money on it!  Evening winds look light for the next few nights with E winds on tap for Friday and then some slightly more typical light to moderate NW winds for the weekend and the start of the work week.  Water temps are looking about average or even a bit on the warm side for late Jan…high 50s/60.  Tides are starting to swing a bit more as we approach next week’s new moon.  Not much movement Friday but the late morning low gives way to a very early morning high and near negative to negative midday lows through the weekend and into next week.  The draining out morning and sunset medium high tide push will help that incoming swell on Fri PM and Sat AM.

Looks like plenty more swell!  Play nicely out there and stay wet San Diego!

1)      Friday the Body Glove Maverick's Invitational is ON!!!  The big waves and great conditions should make for some outstanding competition! Watch it live!

2)    You have to see some of the big waves coming through Hawaii the past few days.  It’s just amazing what these guys put their bodies through!  Laird was out towing Peahi and took a digger…I mean, a REALLY BIG DIGGER!

3)    Don’t count CA out of the big wave picture!  With near perfect conditions and plenty of sunshine the photogs were almost as happy as the surfers up and down the coast!

A little more surf on tap...and weather.

Greetings Earthlings!  Happy New Year!  I hope all of you are surfed out and your arms are noodles!  We’ve had some really fun surf and spectacular conditions for this first week of the year.  The surf looks to taper off Sunday with some waist high waves and messy rainy conditions.  Monday will kick off the week with some significant new WNW swell with surf jumping into the shoulder/HH range with OH waves at the best spots.  The swell is a quickie and will peak late morning.  Surf drops off Tuesday, back into the waist/chest high range to start the day and waist high by the end of the day.  Smaller to start Wed but a new small NW groundswell will bump surf up a tad into the waist high range with occasional chest high set.  Size and well holds for Thursday.  Looks like Friday will see a real boost in size as a WNW moves into place and shoots a burst of surf our way for the day.  Surf’s gonna jump into the OH+ range by late morning but fade as quickly as it shows up.  The storm that looks to be creating this swell isn’t sticking around and staying strong as models show right now.  Things could change.  Surf backs waaaaaaay down Sat and then we’ve got a little dry spell for a while. 

Showers are on the books for the early early morning.  Showers and thunderstorms for most of the day and tapering off in the evening.  Early east winds will start the day with clean conditions but look for NW winds to kick in by midday.  They will probably make a mess of things by late afternoon.  Those brisk NE winds kick in again Monday so that new swell should see better conditions.  Clear and cold til Tues with more clouds for the second half of the week.  COLD nighttime temps still on the clear days with a few more degrees on the cloudy days.  Water temps is chilly and in the mid50s.  Definitely bootie time especially for those frost warning mornings!   We’re seeing some decent water movement with a late morning low and medium high at sunset.  Lots more water movement towards the end of the week with swampy high morning tides and drained out lows for the afternoon sessions.

Back to the grind but I hope everyone’s kicking off 2013 with some fun surf!

Ocean Notes:

1)       If someone hasn’t already emailed this to you or you haven’t seen this pasted all over the news and social media this is a link you really should see.  It’s a visual documentary by conservationist photographer Gary Stokes about shark finning focusing on the drying of fins on the rooftops of buildings in China.  This might just make you to think twice about killing sharks.

2)      These days we’re all short of time but here are a few tips from Surfer Mag for keeping in shape for all those surf sessions.

3)      You might have spotted them already…the whale are migrating!  If you want to catch them out why not heat out with those who know them best…the folks at the Birch Aquarium are doing whale watching trips now through April!

4)      While you’re sitting at your desk at work trying to get through all those emails and voice mails take a little break and take a gander at Surfer Mag’s Best Photos of 2012 . It’ll keep you daydreaming for weeks!

5)      So, what did you do to end the year?  Did you surf massive Jaws or Waimea ?  Well, these guys did!  Amazes me every time!

Mostly med/small size surf this week

Greetings So Cal!  What a nice weekend we had with a big of surf to keep everyone paddling and a little bit happy.  We’re looking at a bit more of the NW for Monday with the southern half of the county picking up a bit more surf than the northern end.  Surf in the chest high range Monday with some slightly larger sets.  Smaller waist/chest high surf for Tuesday.  We’ll also see some background S groundswell but nothing really to get excited about.  Waist high and very inconsistent sets for the southern facing beaches for late Tues and into Wed.  By then the NW will fade to knee/waist.  Thanksgiving Day we’ll be thankful for a new NW groundswell in the waist/chest high range.  Top spots will have some shoulder high sets as the swell builds through the day and peaks through the nights.  Look for some waist/chest high surf for Friday as things back down and another late background S swell for the weekend.  This weekend swell looks like it’ll deliver some small swell as the storm that made it is pretty weak.  Look for some waist high waves at best for most of the weekend.

Weather wise we’re looking at mostly sunny days with some patch overnight and morning marine layer.  Air temps only hitting the mid60s with cooler over night temps in the low 50s.  Light morning NE winds make way for light to moderate NW winds by midday.  As Thanksgiving Day arrives we’ll see a little warm up and mostly clear skies with a puff of clouds here and there.  The weekend looks pretty nice with mostly sunny skies and air temps back up into the mid to upper 70s.  Tides are starting to chill out with medium water movement for the first half of the day and a bit more extreme tides still for the second half of the day.  Water temps in the high 50s and low 60s…winter water temps now let’s hope for some winter swell!

Ocean Notes:

1)       We had a fair amount of showers Saturday night/Sunday morning. There are some spots with questionable water quality as there was enough runoff to make it to the line up.  Heads up if you surf near a rivermouth or stormdrain outlet.  In particular there was a sewage spill at Moonlight Beach and some 6200 gallons of sewage made it out to the beach.  Oceanside also has some questionable water after the rain.  Keep up to date with Coastkeeper’s online app called The Swim Guide.   

2)      A new Eddie-esque type contest will be sponsored by Red Bull this winte  Put your boards away, it’s invite only.  Of course we’ll all be able to watch it online.  More details here .

3)      As we all splash around in the chest high surf let’s take a look at what’s happening across the pond as the North Atlantic is dishing out the good on Portugal this winter.  Dang…those are some BIIIIIIIIIIIIIII waves!

4)      And if you’re thinking of doing a little early Spring Cleaning the folks who endured the wrath of Hurricane Sandy sure could use some threads.  Surf shops around town are collecting items to send eastward as the cold harsh winter sets in over there.  Please help and donate what you can.  More details on what they need and where to drop it can be found on Surfing Mag's page.  Thanks!

Smaller and little more disorganized

Alooooooha! I’m back and ready to surf!  Looks like Friday will be the day to surf as things get kinda small for the weekend. Some waist and maybe chest high surf Friday from left over Paul swell but mostly shorter period NW wind type swell.  Size drops off for Sat and definitely for Sunday with waist high and then thigh/waist for the end of the weekend.  Some WNW swell will show up for late Sun and into Mon wish size bumping up a bit and back into the waist/chest high range.  Tuesday’s kind of a transition day with left over WNW swell before a new late season SW groundswell shows up Wed and surf at the better summer spots hits the chest high range on the better sets.  We’re looking at some slightly larger surf for the end of next week as a system stays low out of the north and delivers some potentially fun surf to end the week.  Overall not a stellar few days of surf ahead but something to keep you wet if you need it.

Some funky transitional Summer/Fall weather with some weak low pressure systems bringing more clouds and even a little drizzle here and there for the weekend and into the first part of next week.  Look for some gustier winds Friday by midday with scattered clouds. For the weekend we’ll see more clouds, cooler air temps along the coast (high 60s) during the day and definitely cooler nighttime temps (low 60s/high 50s)…feeling like winter!  South winds for the weekend to accompany the clouds…hardly stormy but just not the hot sunny stuff we’ve seen the past month.  Still seeing some pretty big tide swings in the second half of the day from the New Moon with medium lows for the dawn patrol going pretty high midday and then really sucking out for the evening session with a negative low.  Water temps are cooling off too…high 60s along the coast.

Some smaller but still fun surf around town.  Winds will play a big factor on conditions this weekend.  Looks like the AM sessions will be your best bet.

Weather and WNW swell to end the week

(I'm heading out of town from Oct. 11-16th so I'll be back bloggin' next Wed...unless I decide to post from the beach on my vacation...)

 

All sorts of activity going on as we swing from Summer to Fall and back again.  After a few nice SW swells it looks like Mother Nature is tossing us another small WNW groundswell.  You might have heard about the North Shores of the Hawaiian Islands the past few days (see Ocean Notes)…it was CRAN-KING!  The swell isn’t really directed at us but we’re still going to benefit from the leftovers.  We’re already seeing the buoys increasing.  Surf should pick up to waist/chest high for Thursday morning with some slightly better waves at the winter North facing beaches but expect some unfavorable weather to put a bit of bump overnight on the surface.  The swell will hold up through Fri, Sat and Sun with surf in the chest/shoulder range.  Weather and wind will be the biggest factor Fri and Sat. By Sun things should clean up and surf looks pretty nice.  The swell fades Monday with a little pick-me-up from some small SW. Surf in the waist/chest range but slightly better at summer beaches.  That’ll be a short and small swell but we’re expecting another medium NW groundswell for Tues of next week with size at west and north facing beaches back into the waist/chest range with some fun shoulder high sets.  Swell holds for Wed as the swell peaks with some nice chest/shoulder high surf.  Kinda quiet after that with what looks like some smaller NW and a small late SW swell developing. 

We’ve got our first weather maker coming to town tonight with moderate S winds tonight making things a little lumpy in the morning and for most of the day.   Looks like a nice window of light winds in the early hours of the day before winds pickup more out of the S.  Sustaining S winds for most of Thurs night and through Fri and pretty gusty for Sat.  And then we have the rain.  The latest models are actually looking more favorable with about a 0.25” along the coast for the day starting overnight and kind of just drizzling all day.  Definiletly some colder air temps (mid-60s) than we’ve had lately and snow…yes, snow levels to 7000’.  Showers should taper off by Friday dawn with some left over clouds  but then  expect sunshine for the windy Sat and a pretty gorgeous day Sunday and air temps back into the mid 70s.  Big high pressure brings sunshine and high 70s back to town for the first half of the week.  Still some cooler nights though to remind you that it’s Fall.  Some big tide swings as we approach Monday’s New Moon.  Look for fuller morning highs to slow things down a bit and negative lows to really drain out the beach breaks by Sunday.  Water temps still in the low 70s/high 60s.  Expect that to cool down with the NW swells that are moving in.  Yup, time for a full suit!

Looking like some fun surf if you can find a nice window between wind and rain but better conditions for the second half of the weekend.  Surf Sunday…Charger’s aren’t on til Monday!

1)       One word: PEAHI! (translation: JAWS!)  This is some of the most gorgeous and perfect HUGE surf I've ever seen!  The video will leave you in awe!  Watch Shane Dorian rock the house with a mammoth sized barrel yesterday.

2)      With the rainy season upon I’ll remind everyone not to surf in poo!  This storm will be the FIRST FLUSH.  Yes, it’s as bad as it sounds.  Check out Coast Keeper’s County Beach Status website.  And watch the water around Ponto.  9000 gallons of sewage spilled there two days ago…POOPY WATER!!!!!!!!! That’s just gonna get flushed out even more as it rains.  Be mindful!

3)      The newest high profile surf flick to hit the theaters later this month is getting some pretty good reviews. Check out the trailer for Chasing Mavericks , the story of Jay Moriarty and his passion for a well know deadly surf spot.
