Small then new fun SW swells!

There she goes…so long south swell!  We’re looking at a few days of quiet NW wind swell as the last of that steep south fades into oblivion.  Tuesday will be pretty quite along the coast with knee to waist high surf.  Wednesday is much of the same with the first few long period waves starting to show overnight.  Thursday looks like the day we’ll see things pick up.  The morning will start with a combo of NW windswell and waist high inconsistent SW swell.  This swell has a much better angle so more of San Diego will see waves.  By the evening session we should see some pretty fun chest high surf with some shoulder high sets at the outstanding summer spots.  Friday the swell is still on the rise for dawn patrollers with shoulder/HH surf around most of town.  Again, a little inconsistent but improving through the day.  Swell peaks late in the evening but Saturday sees a new little SW swell that will help keep surf in the shoulder/HH range with some OH sets at the better south facing spots.  Fun surf continues through Sunday in the shoulder/HH range as things start to fade.  Monday we’re still seeing plenty of swell from that second swell.  Surf in the chest/shoulder range and fading ever so slowly through the day and into Tuesday.  Looks like there’s a little SW/NW combo about a week out so more fun surf on the way!

Hot and sticky!  That’s what we’re seeing but things are finally starting to cool off a bit.  Patchy morning and overnight otherwise sunshine midday with air temps in the low to mid 70s.  Winds looks to be a bit breeze over the next few days out of the N/NW in the 5-15mph range with some 20mph gusts.  We’ll see some overnight breeze too so that means some bump for the Wed morning sessions.  (Waves will be tiny so maybe go for a jog instead!)  Winds back to normal for the end of the week and weekend with light SW winds by midday.  Water temps are a little cooler (mid to high 60s) in the southern half of the county as that last SE swell pushed the warm stuff offshore but North County is basking in the warmer low 70 degree water.  That next SW should push the 70+ degree water back onto the coastline and warm things up again.  We’re seeing a little water movement through the middle of the day with a medium low in the mid-morning and a medium high in the mid-afternoon then dipping back down to a medium low a few hours after sunset.  Not a lot of water movement but when that swell shows up we should have two nice little dawn patrol and evening session tide pushes.

2)     Here’s a great whale hugging story!   This fisherman from Virginia Beach filmed himself freeing a Northern Right whale that was dragging a huge fishing line of fishing gear.  Two thumbs up in my book!  Watch it!

Rain but it's the wind...

Here she comes!  No, not the rain, well, ok some rain but it’s the swell I’m talking about.  We’ve got some NW groundswell on the way for Wednesday. The buoys are picking up steadily with 20 second periods on the local buoys.  The big spoiler will be the wind that’s about to blast through and make chop liver out of everything. We’re looking at surf to pick up into the chest high range tonight with super inconsistent sets in the shoulder high range by Wednesday morning.  Through the day the swell will pick up but the windswell is going to really jump by midday and I’m expecting things to be big but messy as this cold storm moves through.  Wave heights hitting well overhead by sundown but winds gusting to 35mph.  Big windswell sticks around for Thursday morning but winds will die down.  The windswell diminishes all day with chest/shoulder high surf by sunset.  That groundswell will technically still be in the background but it’ll taper off to waist/chest by Friday morning and then waist high by evening.  Smaller WNW swell for Sat with waist high surf.  A new shorter period groundswell looks to fill in for Sunday with a little more windswell on top of it.  Waves in the waist/chest range for the early morning session bumping up to chest/shoulder by sundown.  Monday morning actually looks decent with calmer winds, less windswell and the tail end of a NW groundswell.  Size in the waist/chest range with some shoulder high sets sneaking in through the morning.  Some interesting smaller bursts of WNW swells look to be lining up across the North Pacific. Not huge by any means but some consistent surf to play on.  We’ll see how those little buggers pan out over the next few days.

Oh, the weather…what shall we do with the weather.  Well, technically as I type it’s raining but it’ll probably be over by the time I finish this sentence.  The big story here at the coast is the cold air temps and wind.  LOTS of gusty winds.  Forecast says hail and thunderstorms too. WOOHOOOOOO!  But don’t blink or you’ll miss it!  The bulk of the worst rain and wind will be overnight and then some stiff 15-20mph winds with gusts to 35mph during the day Wednesday.  Winds and chances of rain decrease Wed night.  A second little spritz of rain might squeeze out of a cloud or two Thursday but we’ll see mostly clouds.  Clearing and mostly sunny as we slide into the weekend. Air temps will be cold though…mid50s through Thursday and then highs in the low 60s for Fri/Sat.  The nicest day will be Sun/Mon…sunny and mid/high60s along the coast.  Water temps are in the mid50s.  Tides are working their way towards the more extreme side as we approach the full moon.  Medium high dawn patrol tide will drain out to a midday low near zero feet then back up for a medium sunset tide.  We’re past the King Tide phase so the weekend extreme highs won’t be too bad nor will the drained out afternoon lows.

Surf’s probably gonna be a mess for a few days…weekend looks like of fun though!

Leftovers in the HH range with more swell all week

Yeehaw!  What a crazy weekend of surf!  It was a smidge crowded in some spots but lots of waves and lots and lots of size!  We’re seeing the tail end of that WNW for Monday in the shoulder/HH range.  Size will diminish throughout the day.  Tuesday we’ll see most waist/chest high surf to start the day and waist high for Wednesday.  By Thursday we’re looking at some shorter period WNW groundswell with surf in the waist high range and some chest high sets by evening.  And believe it or not there’s some significant activity in the Southern Hemi so we’re actually going to see some background SW as well!  Surf at the south facing summer beaches are looking at some waist high surf with the occasional chest high set!  The south should last for a day or so giving the breaks some added peaky fun through Friday.  On top of the south will be a more swell later in the day out of the NW giving us some surf in the shoulder high range for the sunset sessions.  That quickie swell will peak Friday night and taper off Saturday with surf in the waist/chest range to start the day and waist high to end the day.  Looks like we’ll see a new shorter period WNW groundswell for the second half of Sunday with surf starting waist high and picking up through the day with waist/chest and some shoulder high sets to finish off the day and start the work week.  The Jet Stream is taking an interesting track south with not only allows storms to warm up and ramp up but it also plops the swell smack dab into our swell window…Thank You Mother Nature!  Looks like another potential nice WNW for the middle of next week.  Will keep my eyes peeled an let you know how that pans out!

The weather certainly kept us on our toes this weekend too!  Looks like the 50/50 weather meant half the weekend was gorgeous and half the weekend was ugly and drizzling! We’ll it’s only rain!  Some great clean conditions for most of the weekend though and pretty much the same conditions for the first half of this week…clean relatively calm winds.  Still some clouds and marine layer through Tuesday but the good news is that we’ll be seeing more sunshine staring Wed and through the weekend. Air temps in the mid to high 60s.  Water temps actually seemed to warm up a little so we’re looking at low/mid60s.  Tides are evening out as we come off the full moon.  Transition from medium low to the late morning/midday medium high should lend a nice push for the dawn patrol.  The evening low will be pretty low a few hours after sunset.

Pretty fun weekend with some leftovers to start the week. Not a bad way to kick off December!

Ocean Notes:

1)       As most veterans of my surf blog know I am a huge proponent for clean water especially surfing in clean water!  My motto is…come on, say it if you know it…DON’T SURF IN POO!  Be smart about where and when you surf!  And check out websites like the San Diego CoastKeeper’s San Diego County Beach Status.  They’ll tell you where the poo is flowing if at all.  And give the ocean at least a day or two to clean up after a decent rain with runoff.

2)      While we were grinning from ear to ear over here in SoCal the folks over on the North Shore were having a little party of their own!  Check out the epic surf over there!

3)      Here’s a class to head back to school for… holding your breath!  Those double or triple wave hold downs seem like eternity when you’re sitting on the ocean floor feeling your board tug on your leash as it gets thrown around at the surface.  Why not learn to hold your breath calmly for 2-3 minutes? 

4)      After a long day at work why not kick back and watch a surf, skate or snow flick on the big screen!  La Paloma Theater always has something good showing.  Check out the latest or a vintage flick with a bag of popcorn and some jujubes!

Mostly med/small size surf this week

Greetings So Cal!  What a nice weekend we had with a big of surf to keep everyone paddling and a little bit happy.  We’re looking at a bit more of the NW for Monday with the southern half of the county picking up a bit more surf than the northern end.  Surf in the chest high range Monday with some slightly larger sets.  Smaller waist/chest high surf for Tuesday.  We’ll also see some background S groundswell but nothing really to get excited about.  Waist high and very inconsistent sets for the southern facing beaches for late Tues and into Wed.  By then the NW will fade to knee/waist.  Thanksgiving Day we’ll be thankful for a new NW groundswell in the waist/chest high range.  Top spots will have some shoulder high sets as the swell builds through the day and peaks through the nights.  Look for some waist/chest high surf for Friday as things back down and another late background S swell for the weekend.  This weekend swell looks like it’ll deliver some small swell as the storm that made it is pretty weak.  Look for some waist high waves at best for most of the weekend.

Weather wise we’re looking at mostly sunny days with some patch overnight and morning marine layer.  Air temps only hitting the mid60s with cooler over night temps in the low 50s.  Light morning NE winds make way for light to moderate NW winds by midday.  As Thanksgiving Day arrives we’ll see a little warm up and mostly clear skies with a puff of clouds here and there.  The weekend looks pretty nice with mostly sunny skies and air temps back up into the mid to upper 70s.  Tides are starting to chill out with medium water movement for the first half of the day and a bit more extreme tides still for the second half of the day.  Water temps in the high 50s and low 60s…winter water temps now let’s hope for some winter swell!

Ocean Notes:

1)       We had a fair amount of showers Saturday night/Sunday morning. There are some spots with questionable water quality as there was enough runoff to make it to the line up.  Heads up if you surf near a rivermouth or stormdrain outlet.  In particular there was a sewage spill at Moonlight Beach and some 6200 gallons of sewage made it out to the beach.  Oceanside also has some questionable water after the rain.  Keep up to date with Coastkeeper’s online app called The Swim Guide.   

2)      A new Eddie-esque type contest will be sponsored by Red Bull this winte  Put your boards away, it’s invite only.  Of course we’ll all be able to watch it online.  More details here .

3)      As we all splash around in the chest high surf let’s take a look at what’s happening across the pond as the North Atlantic is dishing out the good on Portugal this winter.  Dang…those are some BIIIIIIIIIIIIIII waves!

Soooooo small with some weekend fun

Hi y’all!  Well, we’re looking at some pretty small swell right now and things will stay the same for Thursday and Friday.  We’re talking ankle to knee high at best out of the NW.  We’ll see a hint of background S on Friday but no real pick up in surf along the coast.  By Saturday we should see some NW groundswell with size picking up slightly for the dawn patrol, knee/waist high and waist/chest by the end of the day.  Sunday will see the peak of the swell with waist/chest high surf to start the day and things will start to fade through the day.  Monday is looking at some waist high surf with some small background SW groundswell.  Not expecting much out of that system…waist high at the south facing beaches to compliment the winter beaches.  Tuesday see’s both systems fade a bit with Wed even smaller with a little NW wind swell.  Thanksgiving Day looks like surf may pick up but mostly with NW swell and a little background S.  I’ll see how those swell pan out over the next 48 hours and let you know if you should offer to help out with Thanksgiving dinner early or just wait to be on the clean up crew!

Our weather has been pretty spectacular with clean glassy days and very little wind.  Look for increasing dense fog tonight and Thursday morning with calm winds and clouds for Thursday night and an ever so slight chance of showers.  Partly sunny for Fri, again light winds all day with more clouds and chances of showers thoughout the weekend.  Air temps in the mid60s.  Water temps have taken a dive with high 50s around most of the county.  Some huge tide swings with tonight’s new moon.  A really high high tide will hit mid-morning and drain out quickly to a negative low in the late afternoon.  For the weekend the tides are most extreme in the afternoon with much less movement in the morning. There’s some great afternoon tidepooling if you can get to the beach midafternoon as the tide is draining out. 

Looks like a job on the beach at low tide or paddling a SUP for a few miles will be your best bet for the next few days.  Let’s hope Mother Nature stirs things up a bit soon!

Ocean Notes:

1)       I mentioned tidepooling earlier.  Great time of year for it.  Grab a wetsuit, a pair of reef walking shoes and pair of polarized sunglasses and hit the reef midafternoon for the best tidepooling.  Don’t forget to leave all the creatures where you found ‘em and don’t take anything home!  And digging critters out of their hole might make for fun viewing but be gentle.  They hide waaaaay back in there for a reason!

2)      If you’re itching to give to a good cause why not head to the annual San Diego CoastKeeper fundraiser this Thursday.  It’s toned down a bit this year but the silent auction and drawing at the Del Mar Powerhouse is still hot!  Check out the event and get your tickets here!

3)      If you missed either of Donald Takayama’s paddle outs it was obvious that he was not only a legend in the industry but a friend to so many.  Surfline has a nice recap of both events.

4)      And of course I’ll leave things with something surfy surfy.  There hasn’t been anything on our coast to report so how about checking out the early rockin’ North Shore!  And the water’s a nice 75 degrees…almost makes you want to move eh brah?
