Smaller to end the week but new swell to start next week!

Ahoy mateys!  Looking at some decreasing swell along our SoCal coast Wednesday.  Thigh to waist high to start the day and diminishing through the day. We’ll see a bit of small WNW wind swell sweep into town but surf will remain in the thigh/waist high range to start the day Thursday.  A bit of inclement weather moves into town as well so we’ll see a little pick-me-up swell  late Thurs with size picking up a little into the waist/chest range.  Friday looks like the back end of that swell accompanied by a chance of rain and SW winds.  A little more NW wind swell for Sat in the waist/chest range but wind will be a factor. Sunday the swell really backs down through the day starting in the waist/chest range but really dying off into the knee high range by nightfall.  Monday is when it looks like our next swell is due out of the NW. This storm doesn’t look to be holding a lot of energy but it’s in our swell window for a little while so we should see some inconsistent waist/chest high surf to kick off our work week with a bit more energy Tuesday and into Wed with size remaining in the waist/chest range.  The angle of the swell will give the better winter spots and the southern end of the county a little more boost that the other spots.

Seeing as it’s technically winter time it’s not uncommon to see cold rainy weather for a day or two.   We’ll see partial sunshine Wed with increasing clouds Wed night and Thursday with a decent chance of showers for Thursday night and throughout Friday and Friday night.  Slight chance of showers lingering into Sat but then clearing Sat night and sunny Sunday.  SW winds will pick up starting Wed through Sat/Sun with Friday being the messiest day wind-wise.  Air temps in the high 50s through the rest of the week and into the weekend.  A bit of warming in the middle of next week with clear skies.  Water temps are still hovering in the mid-50s.  We’re starting to see some more extreme tides as we approach the New Moon on Sunday.  The dawn patrol will see a pre-dawn high tide drain out to a midday negative tide then turn around for a little tide push at sunset. That will all get more extreme as we move into the weekend and really start to affect your session.

Looks like some wishy washy surf and messy weather for the rest of the week before the cleaner groundswell hits Monday.  Wear your rubber!  It’s still cold out there!

Stay wet San Diego!

Ocean Notes:
1)      While we’re having a last up here the past two months of super fun surf the folks south of the border weren’t too bored either!  Have a little look- see at some Northern Baja fun.

2)    Here’s a little cool video I found from the Academy Award nominated movie Chasing Ice.  Check out this time lapse video of a glacier calving. (just watch it even if you have no idea what calving is!)  The part at the end is the “WHOA” part…check it out.

3)    As we like to start thinking about the Spring thaw here in SoCal I thought you might like to check out this website: http://www.theoutdooradventure.net/ .  If you’re really an outdoor enthusiast this is just the site for you!  Lots of ideas of places to go, how to get there and what to do once you’re there…and which gear to use.

4)    An since we’re in an Earth-friendly mood here are 12 energy saving tips from our friends at Earth911…one for each month…that you can use to be more energy efficient around the house.

5)    And of course I always end with on a surfy note. Check out this footage from Big Monday in Nazare, Portugal…100’ wave anyone?  The vid is at the end of the Garrett McNamara article.

More W swell, offshore and sunshine!

Kicking off the week with some pretty messy windblown surf.  There’s some decent size to it as a new WNW bumps the surf into the chest/shoulder high range by Monday late morning.  Swell peaks out early and then slowly declines through the day with Tues morning seeing some waist/chest high surf out of the W as a new smaller W swell fills in.  This short lived swell will just give us a little boost in size with chest high surf for the closing bell on Tuesday and fading out for Wed.  Then we’re looking at a small longer period swell to kick off the day Thursday.  Waist high W swell will gradually make it into the waist/chest high range as it peaks and moves through town fairly quickly late Thurs and into Fri.  Back down to waist high by Fri and a bit more WNW by then so the better winter spots will see a little more size. Sat is looking pretty small with thigh/waist high surf for most of the day.  Super Bowl Sunday things look to turn around as a nice long period NW swell makes it to town.  Swell starts off in the waist high range and picks up quickly as the swell builds through the day. Should be pretty fun and in the chest/shoulder high range right around kick off with the size peaking off at sunset and into Monday in the HH/OH range!  A few more days of swell as that swell dissipates midweek and then it looks like things get a little quiet for now.

Winds have been the trouble maker the past two days.  Still a chance of showers tonight and NW winds into the night but turning NE by dawn as things start to clean up tomorrow.   It might be a fairly nice and clean dawn patrol as that new swell fills in…cold though with the NE winds.  Partly sunny and cloudy through the day and NW winds pick up in the afternoon putting some bump on the water so earlier will be better.  Monday night looks like more COLD NE winds with air temps dropping into the low 40s making for a pretty chilly dawn patrol Tues.  Light and variable winds for Tues with E winds expected overnight. Luckily the sun will come out Tues and Wed but air temps will stay in the high 50s/low 60s until Thurs when the sunshine will bring us high 60s along the coast.  Water temps in the mid50s still.  Big tide swings as we have the full moon tonight.  Full mid-morning tides will slow things down (nice push for the dawn patrollers though) and a negative low in the late afternoon.

Looks like Thurs and Fri might be a nice call for some fun and slightly warmer surf! And be smart...we've had a significant amount of rain the past few days so surf away from stormdrains and lagoon/river mouths.

I’m out!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)    And want to really save water?  Take an “air shower” with this cool new Aussie water saving shower head.  It showers you with hollow water droplets (aka bubbles) and you use 50% less water!  Sounds clean and green to me!

2)    We’ve been having some mighty fine swell over the past month…not huge for the most part but pretty dang fun! Here’s a nice overview of the Nor-Cal, SoCal and The Islands over the past few swells.

3)    And here’s a great look at an awesome roadtrip from LA to Argentina…yes, you’ll want to pack your bags after this one!

4)    The Atlantic has seen a few really nice storms this winter too and as a result places like Portugal are getting slammed with big surf.  Check this out if you don’t believe me!

Mostly med/small size surf this week

Greetings So Cal!  What a nice weekend we had with a big of surf to keep everyone paddling and a little bit happy.  We’re looking at a bit more of the NW for Monday with the southern half of the county picking up a bit more surf than the northern end.  Surf in the chest high range Monday with some slightly larger sets.  Smaller waist/chest high surf for Tuesday.  We’ll also see some background S groundswell but nothing really to get excited about.  Waist high and very inconsistent sets for the southern facing beaches for late Tues and into Wed.  By then the NW will fade to knee/waist.  Thanksgiving Day we’ll be thankful for a new NW groundswell in the waist/chest high range.  Top spots will have some shoulder high sets as the swell builds through the day and peaks through the nights.  Look for some waist/chest high surf for Friday as things back down and another late background S swell for the weekend.  This weekend swell looks like it’ll deliver some small swell as the storm that made it is pretty weak.  Look for some waist high waves at best for most of the weekend.

Weather wise we’re looking at mostly sunny days with some patch overnight and morning marine layer.  Air temps only hitting the mid60s with cooler over night temps in the low 50s.  Light morning NE winds make way for light to moderate NW winds by midday.  As Thanksgiving Day arrives we’ll see a little warm up and mostly clear skies with a puff of clouds here and there.  The weekend looks pretty nice with mostly sunny skies and air temps back up into the mid to upper 70s.  Tides are starting to chill out with medium water movement for the first half of the day and a bit more extreme tides still for the second half of the day.  Water temps in the high 50s and low 60s…winter water temps now let’s hope for some winter swell!

That’s it for today…hope you all had a spectacular weekend and cause some fun surf.

It’s a wrap!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       We had a fair amount of showers Saturday night/Sunday morning. There are some spots with questionable water quality as there was enough runoff to make it to the line up.  Heads up if you surf near a rivermouth or stormdrain outlet.  In particular there was a sewage spill at Moonlight Beach and some 6200 gallons of sewage made it out to the beach.  Oceanside also has some questionable water after the rain.  Keep up to date with Coastkeeper’s online app called The Swim Guide.

2)      A new Eddie-esque type contest will be sponsored by Red Bull this winte  Put your boards away, it’s invite only.  Of course we’ll all be able to watch it online.  More details here .

3)      As we all splash around in the chest high surf let’s take a look at what’s happening across the pond as the North Atlantic is dishing out the good on Portugal this winter.  Dang…those are some BIIIIIIIIIIIIIII waves!

4)      And if you’re thinking of doing a little early Spring Cleaning the folks who endured the wrath of Hurricane Sandy sure could use some threads.  Surf shops around town are collecting items to send eastward as the cold harsh winter sets in over there.  Please help and donate what you can.  More details on what they need and where to drop it can be found on Surfing Mag's page.  Thanks!

Smaller weekend but sunny and warm!

Cheers!  We’re on the tail end of this NW wind/short period groundswell with some smaller SW groundswell.  Surf for Friday looks to be in the waist/chest high range at the north facing beaches with some of the south facing beaches catching some inconsistent waist high waves.  Tides are really moving so they will definitely be a big favor on size and quality of the waves.  Swell backs off further Saturday and Sun with mostly knee/waist high surf. Looks like late Sunday we’ll see some small NW fill in with only waist high waves on tap.  Late Monday is when we’ll see the next slightly more energetic swell filling in.  Surf bumps up Tues morning into the waist/chest range.  The swell’s not really aimed at us (think…Hawaii!) but we’ll get some leftovers.  Halloween day will see the swell back off a little but still waist/chest high surf around the county.  Another NW looks to fill in for Thursday morning with some decent size…chest high by late morning.

We’ve got Santa Anas on tap for Friday and Saturday.  East winds will pick up tonight (Thursday)  and blow all day in the 10-15mph range with gusts to 30mph.  Should be hot and dry!  Light NE winds Saturday AM turning W by the late morning then light E again Saturday night. That means some cooler nighttime temps, even cooler dawn patrols but once that sun hits the horizon it’s going to warm up into the low 80s for Fri and Sat.  The good part is that it makes the water feel super warm in the morning and even better when the sun comes out.  Big tide swings as we head towards Monday’s full moon.  Early morning high slows things down and the super low mid-afternoon low will probably do a number on the surf as well.  Gotta get it during the turn-around! Water’s in the high 60s around most of the county…probably cooling down Sat after a day of gusty offshores (Google “upwelling”).

Snag the leftovers and get some fun NW swell next week!

I’m out!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       The world of surfing has lost one of it’s great contributors…not only with great boards, great style but also with great Aloha!  Donald Takayama passed away Oct. 22nd at the much to early age of 68.  There are many articles online and fan pages on Facebook but here is one from Surfline.  Aloha Uncle Donald…your ohana here on Earth will miss you. Surf a few good ones for us up there!

2)      Another fallen surfer, Jay Moriarty is remembered in the movie, Chasing Mavericks, opening Friday at theaters near you.  Check out the trailer and other info about the flick here.

3)      Here’s something a little more lighthearted…planet friendly Halloween decorations!  Brought to you from…who else…but  Treehugger!

4)      This Saturday is the Cardiff Surf Classic and Beach Fair  at Seaside Reef!  Lots of cool stuff to see, surf contest to watch, delicious food, entertainment, tarp surfing and best of all it’s all to help promote sustainable living.

5)      If you’re needing a big wave fix here you go…Portugal going off and BIG!

Smaller and little more disorganized

Alooooooha! I’m back and ready to surf!  Looks like Friday will be the day to surf as things get kinda small for the weekend. Some waist and maybe chest high surf Friday from left over Paul swell but mostly shorter period NW wind type swell.  Size drops off for Sat and definitely for Sunday with waist high and then thigh/waist for the end of the weekend.  Some WNW swell will show up for late Sun and into Mon wish size bumping up a bit and back into the waist/chest high range.  Tuesday’s kind of a transition day with left over WNW swell before a new late season SW groundswell shows up Wed and surf at the better summer spots hits the chest high range on the better sets.  We’re looking at some slightly larger surf for the end of next week as a system stays low out of the north and delivers some potentially fun surf to end the week.  Overall not a stellar few days of surf ahead but something to keep you wet if you need it.

Some funky transitional Summer/Fall weather with some weak low pressure systems bringing more clouds and even a little drizzle here and there for the weekend and into the first part of next week.  Look for some gustier winds Friday by midday with scattered clouds. For the weekend we’ll see more clouds, cooler air temps along the coast (high 60s) during the day and definitely cooler nighttime temps (low 60s/high 50s)…feeling like winter!  South winds for the weekend to accompany the clouds…hardly stormy but just not the hot sunny stuff we’ve seen the past month.  Still seeing some pretty big tide swings in the second half of the day from the New Moon with medium lows for the dawn patrol going pretty high midday and then really sucking out for the evening session with a negative low.  Water temps are cooling off too…high 60s along the coast.

Some smaller but still fun surf around town.  Winds will play a big factor on conditions this weekend.  Looks like the AM sessions will be your best bet.

Stay wet!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       With cooler water temps it’s time to dig that 3/2mm out of the pile and throw it in the car for that dawn patrol session or second session after work!  Need a second suit or thinking about selling some old suits to cash in for a new Rip Curl Flash Bomb?  Check out Swell Stuff's wetsuit consignment sale in Leucadia.  Sell your stuff or buy a gently used or fixed up full suit.  Or have them stitch up your old suit!  New location: 948 N. Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia.

2)      Next weekend is the Cardiff Surf Classic at Seaside Reef bringing “environmental awareness to our coastal communities.”   This awesome event combines green living with good fun surfing!  And there’s a great grom contest too!  Sign your grom up here!

3)      Looking for a beach cleanup this weekend or wondering how you can help keep our beaches and ocean clean?  Check out the San Diego Chapter of Surfrider's page for plenty of opportunities!

4)      Slater and Fanning knocked out of competition in Portugal  in the early rounds?  WHAT WHAT WHAT?  Messy surf opens the door for some unlikely winners!

5)      And we’re still getting footage of insane Jaws from last week.  Kudos to Keala Kennelly for this paddle-in monster!

6)      And don’t miss this Dorian BOMB at Jaws a day later…it looks like an ant on a perfect little peeler…a 30’ peeler that is!

7)      And last but not least…more footage from Jaws because…well, because it was just so dang big and perfect!
