Winter's not over...more fun surf!

Well THAT was fun! I hope everyone survived the MASSIVE waves we had last weekend.  There’s more where that came from. Plenty more swell on the way for the next week.  Chest/shoulder high waves out of the WNW on tap for the Friday morning session.  Surf should start picking up too so there might be some HH sets…even slightly bigger in the southern half of the region.  A new WNW is filling in so by midday we should see some fairly decent HH/OH waves. This groundswell doesn’t have super long intervals so surf will be decently consistent.  Well OH-OH+ by nightfall.  The swell peaks Saturday morning with OH waves at first light. Things taper off to abut shoulder/HH by evening.  Sunday sees chest/shoulder high waves tapering off quickly to waist high by sunset.  Another new NW makes it way into town for Monday with surf staring off on the smaller side and then filling in to chest/shoulder high by midday.  Size holds through the night and through most of Tuesday.  There’s more N in this one so the breaks farther south and the better Winter spots will see slightly larger surf.  Size decreases for Wednesday with waist/chest high surf and waist high by the evening session.  Smaller surf Thursday but it looks like there may be yet another small NW waiting in the wings.  The storms are sort of small so the swells aren’t huge…fun but not huge.

The So Cal version of the Polar Vortex brought us some much needed rain and some INSANELY big surf but that’s all gone now and we’re looking at Santa Ana type weather for the weekend. Before that we have a little chance of drizzle tonight and in the morning with partly cloudy skies all day…probably more so at the coast with some sunshine inland.  Then we’ll see some sunshine all weekend with air temps in the high 60s for Friday and then mid to high 70s and maybe even 80 by Sunday and clear skies.  Evenings will see east winds and light to moderate west winds by midday.  Things cooling off and clouding up a little for the start of the week but then warming up midweek and sliding into a sunny weekend next week.  Water temps got a boost with that last swell as it swept up from the south.  Readings are in the low 60s around most of town and maybe a hair cooler closer to the border and at the lower tides.  Mid-morning medium low moving slightly up to a late-afternoon/early evening high.

Looks like some fun surf for this weekend and nice weather on top of that!  Stay wet San Diego!

1)      Well, I couldn’t very well pass up all the insane fotos of the massive swell on the biggest days EVER.  There’s Youtube (lots more on YouTube), Surfline, Surfing Mag, and of course, Surfer Mag.

2)    Peahi was doing it’s thing and almost took a few surfers down.

3)    And how about this wipeout down in Tazzieland!  This is their SUMMER surf!!!  It amazes me that we don’t see more wipeouts like this.  Glad the dude survived!

Mostly med/small size surf this week

Greetings So Cal!  What a nice weekend we had with a big of surf to keep everyone paddling and a little bit happy.  We’re looking at a bit more of the NW for Monday with the southern half of the county picking up a bit more surf than the northern end.  Surf in the chest high range Monday with some slightly larger sets.  Smaller waist/chest high surf for Tuesday.  We’ll also see some background S groundswell but nothing really to get excited about.  Waist high and very inconsistent sets for the southern facing beaches for late Tues and into Wed.  By then the NW will fade to knee/waist.  Thanksgiving Day we’ll be thankful for a new NW groundswell in the waist/chest high range.  Top spots will have some shoulder high sets as the swell builds through the day and peaks through the nights.  Look for some waist/chest high surf for Friday as things back down and another late background S swell for the weekend.  This weekend swell looks like it’ll deliver some small swell as the storm that made it is pretty weak.  Look for some waist high waves at best for most of the weekend.

Weather wise we’re looking at mostly sunny days with some patch overnight and morning marine layer.  Air temps only hitting the mid60s with cooler over night temps in the low 50s.  Light morning NE winds make way for light to moderate NW winds by midday.  As Thanksgiving Day arrives we’ll see a little warm up and mostly clear skies with a puff of clouds here and there.  The weekend looks pretty nice with mostly sunny skies and air temps back up into the mid to upper 70s.  Tides are starting to chill out with medium water movement for the first half of the day and a bit more extreme tides still for the second half of the day.  Water temps in the high 50s and low 60s…winter water temps now let’s hope for some winter swell!

Ocean Notes:

1)       We had a fair amount of showers Saturday night/Sunday morning. There are some spots with questionable water quality as there was enough runoff to make it to the line up.  Heads up if you surf near a rivermouth or stormdrain outlet.  In particular there was a sewage spill at Moonlight Beach and some 6200 gallons of sewage made it out to the beach.  Oceanside also has some questionable water after the rain.  Keep up to date with Coastkeeper’s online app called The Swim Guide.   

2)      A new Eddie-esque type contest will be sponsored by Red Bull this winte  Put your boards away, it’s invite only.  Of course we’ll all be able to watch it online.  More details here .

3)      As we all splash around in the chest high surf let’s take a look at what’s happening across the pond as the North Atlantic is dishing out the good on Portugal this winter.  Dang…those are some BIIIIIIIIIIIIIII waves!

Small but sunny

Don’t hate the messenger but we’re in for a quiet week of surf.  We’re seeing some short period NW wind swell creating some bumps for a waist high ride here and there.  About the same for Thursday and a hiccup of SW swell will show Friday.  SW waves in the waist high range with a slightly bigger wave here and there, inconsistent and peaking Friday late afternoon only to fade out to pretty much nada for the weekend.  The local NW wind swell will keep some super small peelers coming in but they will very tide dependant as we move into the weekend and some more extreme tides.  Monday we might see some more small SW but really inconsistent and maybe not even noticeable until Tuesday and into the 4^th of July holiday.  (YEAH!)  That swell is super steep though so I think San Diego might miss a lot of the “action”.  It looks like some more long period SW swell might be headed our way in about 7-8 days.  I’ll let you know in a few days how those storms/swells are developing.

More sunshine and fairly light winds for the rest of the week and into the weekend.  Thurs and Fri look to be pretty dang hot and sunny actually  (mid/high 70s along the coast) with things cooling off a few degrees for the weekend (low 70s).  We’ll continue to see the patchy morning clouds but they seem to be breaking up pretty early.  Winds are calm in the morning with moderate west winds to cool you off by midday and into the afternoon.  We’ll start to see more tidal movement as we enter the weekend with a medium high in the early morning going out to a low midday and a big high tide push an hour or so before sunset.  Water temps are in the mid-60s…a bubble of warm water in N. County and kinda chilly down south with some upwelling going on south of LJ and even more south of Pt. Loma.

Well, it’s summer time so at least we have some great weather going into July and the short holiday week.  Not great for surf but it’ll happen!

1)       Don’t forget about the Summer Fun on the 101 this Friday and Saturday in Leucadia!  Bands, booths, and…oh yeah, FUN! 

2)      The Thursday after the 4^th of July always finds the local beaches and parks a TOTAL MESS!  You can one or two (or both) things…remind your friends to throw their party goodies in the garbage when they’re done celebrating our country’s independence and/or head to the beach to help with the Surfrider "Stay Classy Not Trashy" beach clean up.

New NW wind swell and some smaller surf ahead

Madames et monsieurs…well, the wind wasn’t actually as horrible as the wind charts made them out to be…some winds for sure but also some pretty fun surf.  That S swell is still on the fade and the new NW wind swell is building quickly.  Buoys are jumping with surf for Wednesday looking to be in the HH+ range.  The swell peaks midday with some consistent and sizable waves…wind conditions don’t look too bad so it should be a fun day of surf.  Surf backs down Thursday with lingering NW wind swell in the chest high range and further still for Friday in the waist high zone.  We should see a little hiccup of new SW ground swell Friday with very inconsistent waist high waves showing up at the south facing spots.  Looks surf gets pretty small for the rest of the weekend with lingering S swell.  Waves in the knee/waist high range for Saturday and Sunday.  Looks like we should see some small SW groundswell for the start of next week.  No huge storms in the southern hemi but one looks like it spun just long enough to send us a little something to kick off our week.

The winds and steep full moon tides will be the deciding factor for Wed with some early but SE winds all night and into the morning and then picking up out of the west midday.  Looks like the midmorning winds will be the lightest.  Looks for some bump on the super early dawn patrol waves not to mention the drained out tide.  Luckily we’ll see some more sunshine tomorrow with decent air temps in the high 60s.  Looks for a similar pattern for Thursday and Friday with a big more marine layer in the early AM and late evening.  Big singing tide with an early negative low and medium high midday going to a medium low a few hours before sunset.  Water’s feeling nice especially midday with some sunshine on your back.

1)       Here’s a great read from the NY Times… "The Darker Thrills of EcoTourism" from today’s paper.  Author recounts thee travels of Andrew Blackwell, a Brooklyn-based author and journalist, who highlights the not-so-green parts of our planet exposing the uglier side of what humans are doing to our planet.  It’s a far cry from the pristine beaches we seek out.  An eye opener for sure!

2)      Whatcha doing this Saturday?  Come check out the Carlsbad Beach Fest!  It’s got everything from a Triathalon, K, surf contests, SUP races, Zumba-thon, booths, activities for kiddies, food court, beach clean up, sand art, live entertainment and of course drawings and prizes.  What else would you want to do?  It’s a mile of summery beach fun!  Check it out!

3)      And if you hadn’t heard…this past Saturday President Obama declared June National Ocean Month!  Read more to find out what exactly the administration is going to do to celebrate…head to Disneyland?
