Fun new NW for the holiday!

Happy Holidays everyone!  We’re looking at a nice new NW swell filling in tonight just in time for Thanksgiving and the weekend.  We’ll see some nice fun waves for Thursday ranging from chest/shoulder high in the morning to some solid shoulder/HH waves by midday with OH waves at the standout winter spots.  With the angle of the swell the north facing breaks farther south will be picking up some of the larger sets.  Look for the swell to peak through the night with some lingering HH+ waves for Friday morning and then starting to fade to chest high by midday.  We’ll also see some SW background groundswell kick in halfway through the day so our summer beaches will see a little bump up in swell.  Saturday it looks like we’ll see the remains of the NW with more of that SW swell.  Waves in the waist/chest high range at most beaches.  Sunday will see the leftovers from the SW swell with waist high waves with some funky little back to back NW wind swell appearing at the winter spots.  Waves in the waist high range from those swells carrying on into Monday and Tuesday.  Looks like some super late season SW groundswell appearing for the middle of next week.  Some interesting storm activity going on down in the Southern Hemi that’s kind of odd for this time of year.  I’ll keep and eye on it and let you know.

The long holiday weekend looks pretty spectacular as far as weather goes.  We’re seeing sunshine though the entire weekend with air temps warming up into the high 60s for Thanksgiving Day and high 70s by Saturday before dipping back down to the high 60s for Sunday and into the start of next week.  Expect some cool nights along with patch morning fog in the mornings.  Winds will be mostly calm with a little west breeze for the afternoon.  Pretty gorgeous conditions if you ask me!  Tides are pretty high in the pre-dawn hours and dropping to a medium low by about midday before turning around for the sunset session medium high tide push.  Good tides for the new swell!  Look for some more extreme water movement as we get into the weekend with the morning high tide slowing things down a bit draining out to the early afternoon low.  Water temps are a bit chilly in the high 50s.

1)       With the Thanksgiving holiday upon us I can’t help but post this article about Vegan Thanksgiving recipes.  The butternut squash mashed potatoes and sweet potato and chard fritters look pretty dang tasty!

2)      And here’s a wonderous sight I had to share…a rare albino humpback whale!  Very cool!

3)      Check out this article about Gaviota Coast, the last 20 miles of unspoiled coastline in Southern California.  You can imagine it’s a heavily sought after chunk of land by developers.  The fight to keep this pristine land just that…pristine needs your help to create a documentary to spread the word.  Read about the project here feel free to help out.

Mostly med/small size surf this week

Greetings So Cal!  What a nice weekend we had with a big of surf to keep everyone paddling and a little bit happy.  We’re looking at a bit more of the NW for Monday with the southern half of the county picking up a bit more surf than the northern end.  Surf in the chest high range Monday with some slightly larger sets.  Smaller waist/chest high surf for Tuesday.  We’ll also see some background S groundswell but nothing really to get excited about.  Waist high and very inconsistent sets for the southern facing beaches for late Tues and into Wed.  By then the NW will fade to knee/waist.  Thanksgiving Day we’ll be thankful for a new NW groundswell in the waist/chest high range.  Top spots will have some shoulder high sets as the swell builds through the day and peaks through the nights.  Look for some waist/chest high surf for Friday as things back down and another late background S swell for the weekend.  This weekend swell looks like it’ll deliver some small swell as the storm that made it is pretty weak.  Look for some waist high waves at best for most of the weekend.

Weather wise we’re looking at mostly sunny days with some patch overnight and morning marine layer.  Air temps only hitting the mid60s with cooler over night temps in the low 50s.  Light morning NE winds make way for light to moderate NW winds by midday.  As Thanksgiving Day arrives we’ll see a little warm up and mostly clear skies with a puff of clouds here and there.  The weekend looks pretty nice with mostly sunny skies and air temps back up into the mid to upper 70s.  Tides are starting to chill out with medium water movement for the first half of the day and a bit more extreme tides still for the second half of the day.  Water temps in the high 50s and low 60s…winter water temps now let’s hope for some winter swell!

Ocean Notes:

1)       We had a fair amount of showers Saturday night/Sunday morning. There are some spots with questionable water quality as there was enough runoff to make it to the line up.  Heads up if you surf near a rivermouth or stormdrain outlet.  In particular there was a sewage spill at Moonlight Beach and some 6200 gallons of sewage made it out to the beach.  Oceanside also has some questionable water after the rain.  Keep up to date with Coastkeeper’s online app called The Swim Guide.   

2)      A new Eddie-esque type contest will be sponsored by Red Bull this winte  Put your boards away, it’s invite only.  Of course we’ll all be able to watch it online.  More details here .

3)      As we all splash around in the chest high surf let’s take a look at what’s happening across the pond as the North Atlantic is dishing out the good on Portugal this winter.  Dang…those are some BIIIIIIIIIIIIIII waves!

Soooooo small with some weekend fun

Hi y’all!  Well, we’re looking at some pretty small swell right now and things will stay the same for Thursday and Friday.  We’re talking ankle to knee high at best out of the NW.  We’ll see a hint of background S on Friday but no real pick up in surf along the coast.  By Saturday we should see some NW groundswell with size picking up slightly for the dawn patrol, knee/waist high and waist/chest by the end of the day.  Sunday will see the peak of the swell with waist/chest high surf to start the day and things will start to fade through the day.  Monday is looking at some waist high surf with some small background SW groundswell.  Not expecting much out of that system…waist high at the south facing beaches to compliment the winter beaches.  Tuesday see’s both systems fade a bit with Wed even smaller with a little NW wind swell.  Thanksgiving Day looks like surf may pick up but mostly with NW swell and a little background S.  I’ll see how those swell pan out over the next 48 hours and let you know if you should offer to help out with Thanksgiving dinner early or just wait to be on the clean up crew!

Our weather has been pretty spectacular with clean glassy days and very little wind.  Look for increasing dense fog tonight and Thursday morning with calm winds and clouds for Thursday night and an ever so slight chance of showers.  Partly sunny for Fri, again light winds all day with more clouds and chances of showers thoughout the weekend.  Air temps in the mid60s.  Water temps have taken a dive with high 50s around most of the county.  Some huge tide swings with tonight’s new moon.  A really high high tide will hit mid-morning and drain out quickly to a negative low in the late afternoon.  For the weekend the tides are most extreme in the afternoon with much less movement in the morning. There’s some great afternoon tidepooling if you can get to the beach midafternoon as the tide is draining out. 

Looks like a job on the beach at low tide or paddling a SUP for a few miles will be your best bet for the next few days.  Let’s hope Mother Nature stirs things up a bit soon!

Ocean Notes:

1)       I mentioned tidepooling earlier.  Great time of year for it.  Grab a wetsuit, a pair of reef walking shoes and pair of polarized sunglasses and hit the reef midafternoon for the best tidepooling.  Don’t forget to leave all the creatures where you found ‘em and don’t take anything home!  And digging critters out of their hole might make for fun viewing but be gentle.  They hide waaaaay back in there for a reason!

2)      If you’re itching to give to a good cause why not head to the annual San Diego CoastKeeper fundraiser this Thursday.  It’s toned down a bit this year but the silent auction and drawing at the Del Mar Powerhouse is still hot!  Check out the event and get your tickets here!

3)      If you missed either of Donald Takayama’s paddle outs it was obvious that he was not only a legend in the industry but a friend to so many.  Surfline has a nice recap of both events.

4)      And of course I’ll leave things with something surfy surfy.  There hasn’t been anything on our coast to report so how about checking out the early rockin’ North Shore!  And the water’s a nice 75 degrees…almost makes you want to move eh brah?

left over SW, NW windswell and easing winds

Ahoy surfers!  Some nice SW swell mixed in with some sizable NW wind swell capped off by some really ugly winds and a bit of rain too.  It looks like things are going to calm down a little over the next few days so conditions should improve a little.  We’re still going to see some winds out of the NW tonight but that should turn into E and NE winds for the next few days.  Swell wise we’re looking at some leftover SW swell for Sunday with more NW wind swell.  SW swells in the waist/chest range with some shoulder high sets earlier in the day.  Swell backs off through the day with the leftovers for Monday in the waist high range.  Tues, Wed and Thursday look to be pretty small with waves in the thigh/knee high range from local windswell and the dregs of the SW swell.  Friday we’ll see some new WNW swell start to fill in with some waist high waves by midday.  We should see some decent surf out of this one for a few days with size picking up Saturday and Sunday.  That’s still about a week away so I’ll update you on that swell in a few days.

Weather looks to calm down as a high pressure system moves in over the next few days.  That means slightly warmer air temps but we’ll also see some E and NE winds earlier in the days with W winds in the afternoons.  We’ll also see clear sunny skies and clear cold nights.  Fog will finally show up midweek along with a few more clouds and even a little chance of showers again by Thursday.  Water temps have really dropped with the latest batch of wind and windswell.  We’re looking at low60s around most of the county.  Tides will be a big factor as we move through the week as we’re starting to see some big swings in the tides with the upcoming new moon on Wed.  A big high tide for the early morning sessions will drain out by midday and then race back up for another high just after sunset.

Some decent size on the swell and the conditions should start to clean up Sunday.  Looks like the early morning E/NE winds will provide the best conditions for the next few days but tides will slow things down.

Just one today…much of the surfing community celebrated the life of Donald Takayama today with paddle out sessions and celebrations of his life in Oceanside, CA and at Waikiki, HI.   Donald certainly left his stoke on the industry and shared it with so many.   My favorite longboard is my Takayama.  I think a lot of people can say that too!  Aloha Donald!

More NW, SW then rain...

Oh boy oh boy!  Some fun surf today with that WNW filling in and gorgeous glassy warm conditions all day.  Some nice chest and even shoulder high sets rolling in at the better winter spots.  We’re looking for that swell to back off a little for Tuesday with some small background SW groundswell but a new WNW looks to fill in starting late Tues and into Wed.  This swell will have some nice energy which translates into…yup…fun waves!  Tuesday will see most waist/chest high waves with surf bumping up Wed into the chest/shoulder high range with the occasional HH wave at the standout north facing breaks.  That swell peaks in the afternoon and tapers off Thursday with chest high surf to start the day and ending with some waist/chest waves at sunset.  The good news is that Friday we’re looking at a new late season SW groundswell to fill in and bump surf into the chest/shoulder high range especially at the better summer spots with some shoulder+ sets.  The not-so-good-news is that we’re supposed to see some foul weather potentially at the same time.  Early Fri is probably going to be your best bet for the cleanest conditions but I’m not anticipating any crazy weather out of this system.  Look for holding surf through Sat and early Sun in the chest/shoulder high range with standouts at the summer spots.  Sunday it looks like we’re going to see some NW windswell that will bump up size but make things a little more disorganized.  Depending on the rain showers Friday water quality might be an issue over the weekend.

Weather is all over the map this week.  Hot, dry and calm/offshore winds today with things turning around for Tuesday, slightly cooler (mid70s).  Winds start off out of the east but turn west in the afternoon.  Marine layer moves in Tues night and more cooling (low 70s) for Wed, with clouds and chances of showers for late Thurs, and Fri and showers likely Friday night.  Air temps really “plummeting” Fri and Sat with highs in the low 60s before clearning and warming up Sunday.  Winds look to be an issue starting Thurs midday with some gusty SE winds turning SW by Friday midday thru Saturday.  Water temps are slipping slowly into the high/mid 60s.  We’re between the full and new moon so not much water movement going on at all.  We’ll see more movement come Friday with the early dawn patrol high tide moving to the midday low and back up again for the evening session. 

Looks like some fun surf coming up…might have to catch just the right window on Thurs and Fri with the funky winds.

4)      Before Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast there were some pretty amazing waves to be had.  Here is some footage of some of them.  Condolences and best wishes to those who were affected by Sandy.  Hoping for a speedy recovery to all that was lost.

New WNW - quickie forecast

Sorry, was out of town for the long weekend and missed the last update.  Just a quickie tonight and a full forecast Monday night.  Looks like a new WNW groundswell is filling in on the buoys and we should see a definite increase in size for Monday.  The first swell is a quickie with another NW swell right on its heels for Tuesday. We’re looking at waist/chest for most of the county with surf most everywhere with the decent amount of west in it.  More size for Tuesday and Wed with that second swell.  Late S for later in the week along with a low pressure system, wind swell and possibly showers by the end of the week.

Enjoy this gorgeous Santa Ana for another two days with air temps in the low 80s and high 70s before the storm dips down and cools us off!  Clear nights also means cool nights with some light east winds over night and chilly but gorgeous dawn patrol…especially with the fun new swell.
