Steep SSE will mostly miss us. :-(

Greetings fellow surfers!  Weeeeeeeeeeeeeell, it looks like we’re not getting anything from what was Hurricane Daniel and we’ll probably just get a smidge of very steep (SSE) south from Hurricane Emilia starting tomorrow.  I guess a "smidge" is better than nothing.  Thursday looks for some waist high surf mostly at the super south facing summer spots with the super rare chest high set in the uppermost N. County and north.  Surf probably won’t get much bigger than that if we even see that much.  Most other beaches will be looking at more knee high angle slappers.  Friday the hurricane swell peaks with waist+ at the best (and only the best) summer spots.  This swell is super steep!  LA should see some shoulder/HH surf up at the Bu but the rest of us will just have to hear about it.  The weekend tapers off to knee/waist for Saturday and knee high Sunday.  Looks like some activity down off South America.  Models have this storm moving a week bit more in the northerly direction before disappearing so we might see more steep swell by Monday/Tuesday.  Again, that’s a pretty steep angle for SD so overall I think things are looking kind of quiet for the first part of the week.  Minor activity stirring in the rest of the Southern Hemi so we’ll just keep our fingers crossed that something kicks up some surf for us up here.

We’ve having a little heat wave this week but luckily we also have some nice cool marine layer at night.  The air is getting pretty thick tomorrow as some southerly air moves up and the humidity increases.  Patchy fog gives way to more sunshine on both Thurs and Fri with a chance of thunderstorms Thurs night and Fri.  Pretty much the same story thru the weekend with a wee bit of cooling from the high 70s to the low 70s along the coast by Sunday.  Clear skies for next week!  Water temps cooled a little in N. County but now the southern end of SD is seeing the warmer temps.  Mid to upper 60s all over with very light tidal movement through the daylight hours.

Time to head north or bust out a BIG LOG (or SUP)…got for a paddle…

Stay wet San Diego!
Mish

Ocean notes:

1)     Here’s something new, green and surfable!  The newest Libtech board…new foam recipes, 100percent recycling of the trimmed off material, secret eco-ingredients, and rubberized metallic fibers in the rails…WHAT IS THIS THING?  I dunno…click here to find out!  If anyone’s ridden one I’d love to hear a review!

2)     This has absolutely NOTHING to do with surfing except that it’s sponsored by DC Shoes.   It’s Gymkhana FIVE: Ultimate Urban Playground San Francisco.  If you thought you were a slick driver you ain’t nothing compared to this guy.  You have to see this…10,000,000 other already have!

3)     I know how to get you to click on a video link…just type “Mentawai barrels”.

4)     And for all of you reading this on your iPhone or Android here’s a link for you… Surf apps! There are some good ones too!  I already have a couple of them on my smart-a$$ phone.  If only I were as smart as my phone!

Some bump and MAYBE steep hurricane S

Alooooooooha SoCal!  Well, we finally had some decent SW ground swell.  There’s still some swell left in the water but there’s some messy wind swell on top of it making it lumpy and bumpy with sets sliding in every so often.  Monday is looking like waist/chest high fading to waist by sundown…unfortunately with more of that W wind chop on top.  The rest of the week is looking iffy for surf.  We’ve got two definite hurricanes, Daniel and Emilia down off Mex but both are aimed at Hawaii and the amount of surf that will reach SD County is negligible.  If any S swell is going to squeak thru it will only be seen at the most S facing breaks, N. County and OC/LA.  Tuesday is when we would see anything from Daniel with waist/chest high sets, dropping off Wed to knee/waist wind swell and then slowly back up again Thursday as Emilia starts to fill in.  Swell from Emilia (which will miss most of SD) will peak Fri in the waist/chest range with some shoulder+ sets then fade off for a fairly small weekend of surf.  I’m really hoping we see something from those two hurricanes (along with more warm water) because otherwise it’s going to be a quiet week.  Pretty small either way for the start of next week.  If I were you I’d high tail it to Hawaii, park it on the S shore and surf my brains out…

Well, since I didn’t win the lottery I’ll forget heading to Hawaii and talk about the weather this week. Look for a bit of patchy marine layer for the mornings all week but clearing and fairly sunny and nice by midday.  We’re looking at air temps in the mid/high 70s along the coast, calm (glassy) mornings with moderate west winds by midday and then calm (um, glassy) for the evenings.  Pretty nice on into the weekend.  Water temps are in the mid to high 60s…66-68 not uncommon right now unless you’re south of Pt. Loma…then it’s a few degrees cooler.  Tides are coming out of that extreme window after Tuesday’s Full Moon.  We’ll see early morning lows but just around a +1’ and heading to a medium mid-afternoon high before it goes back down to the medium low a few hours after the 8pm sunset.

Enjoy the glorious sunshine and hope that Emilia swings our way.  I’ll update you on potential for that swell in a few days.

Use plenty of SPF folks!

Lates,
Mish

Ocean notes:

1)       Wow, our Big Bay Bust on the 4th even made Treehugger news…and not for killing sea life, deafening marine mammals or disturbing nesting water fowl but for how incredibly awesome it actually was.  You have to admit, that was one heck of an explosion!

2)      Good to see the government is thinking about our health and taking care of nature!  More biking in the national parks! (even though they’re closing some).

3)      I love photo essays.  Done correctly they not only make you feel like you were there but they also make you want to dust off your passport, dig out your tropical wax and head out the door!  This one from Surfer Mag in Central America does just that!

4)      I was wondering earlier today “What ever happened to Brad Gerlach?”  I used to watch him at all the local contests in the late 80s and early 90s…rippin’ blacks, S. Mission and spots throughout N. County.  Every now and then I hear rumors of his appearance during big winter swells but all it took was a quick internet search and. VOILA, The Gerr, still ripping big and small surf!

Here comes some SW swell!

Howdy ho!  Things are starting to look up!  We had a might quiet holiday week as far as surf is concerned.  We’re already starting to see the 18second swell on the buoys out of the SW so I’m expecting super inconsistent waist high surf building during the negative low tide Friday morning.  Surf over the next few days will be very tide dependant.  Look for chest high surf by midday with some shoulder high sets at the better S facing beaches.  The swell fills in a bit more Saturday with more consistent shoulder high surf and HH sets…carrying on into Sunday morning and then starting to taper off in the afternoon.  We’ll still see some chest high surf by Monday morning but winds might be an issue for Monday.  Surf drops off Tues as we see a little wind swell and waist high surf thru Wed.  There’s another S aimed our way but I think it’s really going right past us as it’s angled all wrong for our swell window.  There’s a nice Tropical Storm Daniel that’s spinning off the tip of Baja but it’s aimed at Hawaii and not looking like it’s going to head our way any time soon.

Well, the 4th of July was a BUST (as were some of the fireworks!) in terms of beach weather but things look like they’ll pick up for the weekend.  We’re still looking at patchy morning fog and clouds through the middle of the day but the professional forecasters say we should see the sun.  I’ll believe it when I see it!  Look for a slight warming trend through the weekend with high 60s going up into the low 70s through the weekend and into next week.  Sunday and Mondays looks like the nicest days of the 5-day forecast.  As far as winds are concerned we’re looking at calm mornings.  We should lose this S wind Friday.  Expect some moderate West wind Fri and N winds by midday Sat.  At least they should help blow the clouds away (does it work that way?).  Water temps are nice…should be nicer after this next S swell…mid 60s up and down the coast.  Still some big tide swings as we come off the full moon this past Tuesday.  The morning’s are pretty drained out with medium tide swings midday and then a nice little push for the evening session (but winds might be an issue).

Well, patience pays off…surf is on its way!

Hope you all had a relaxing 4th of July and are ready to get your surf on!

Lates,
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       Wanna go fast but stay green?  Well, on July 8th the carbon fiber Tesla electric motorcycle, Roskva, will be unveiled!  0-100kph in 4 seconds AND it only weighs 67 lbs!  Pretty sweet!  Funny though, they don’t mention the price in the article!

2)      Got a huge hunk of watermelon left in your fridge from the 4th of July?  Well, what are you waiting for…blend that baby and make some icy cold libations this weekend after a long surf session!  I discovered a watermelon mojito…blended watermelon with mint, a bit of mango juice (instead of simple sugar) and an ice cube or two…oh, and rum!  VOILA!  Here are some more watermelon delights to try this summer!

3)      More fun beach activity…does it ever end?  The Vigilucci’s Beach Bocce World Championship XXXII is this Saturday at the Dog Beach in Del Mar.  You KNOW you don’t want to miss this!

4)      With a lot of you packing up and head to destinations unknown this might be just the article you need before you zip up your board bag and head out the door.  This great article from Surfer Mag talks about how to deal with some of the more common types of surf ailments  while on the road. Everything from urchin spines to jellyfish stings.

5)      And now for something completely surfy!  Yes…Teahupoo was going off AGAIN.  I don’t know about you but for me it never gets old seeing pics of this place CRANKIN!

6)      And here’s a nice clip I stumbled upon on You Tube…Greg Noll from the movie Riding Giants and his infamous Waimea wave!  It’s a good one to watch…this is where it started! (well for da’ kine haoles anyway!)

NW wind swell and then some nice SW ground swell

Howdy all!  Another glorious SoCal weekend (well, minus much surf).  Things are cooling down but the light at the end of the tunnel is a nice SW ground swell by the end of the week.  But I’ll get to that in a minute.  First we have more NW wind swell knee high surf for Monday and Tuesday with surf bumping up on Wed to the knee/waist high range (try to contain your excitement!) from some more NW wind swell.  The next surf comes Thursday with some super steep S swell.  I’m thinking most of SD County won’t see a huge increase but the better summer spots should see some waist high peelers.  The light at the end of the tunnel I mentioned earlier is due on Friday.  We’ll see super inconsistent waves showing up early in the day and then building through the day into the waist/chest range.  By Saturday we’re looking at some steady chest/shoulder high surf through the day and well into Sunday.  It’ll start to fade off Monday as far as the models are concerned.  I’m just stoked that there’s some life down there in the Southern Hemi…man, we are OVERDUE!

Weather wise we’re seeing some funky weather, if you hadn’t noticed.  After two glorious days of sunshine this weekend the afternoon beach day turned into clouds, wind and much cooler air temps.  The low pressure system will stick around until at least mid week.  That means slightly cooler air temps on the coast and onshore winds by midday.  By midweek we might see some higher humidity as well as some thunderheads move up from Mex.  We’ll see clouds thru Monday but decreasing clouds each day.  The 4th of July should see mostly clear skies through the day and some clouds making their way back just after the fireworks finales are over.  Tuesday is the full moon so that means big tide swings but mostly in the middle of the night.  There’s not huge tide swings midday but the afternoon low to the sunset high will have some push to it.  Water temps are feeling pretty nice these days as they sit in the mid60s.

Not a lot of surf going on thru Wed but a new swell for the end of the week/weekend!

Surfy surfy!
Mish

Small but sunny

Don’t hate the messenger but we’re in for a quiet week of surf.  We’re seeing some short period NW wind swell creating some bumps for a waist high ride here and there.  About the same for Thursday and a hiccup of SW swell will show Friday.  SW waves in the waist high range with a slightly bigger wave here and there, inconsistent and peaking Friday late afternoon only to fade out to pretty much nada for the weekend.  The local NW wind swell will keep some super small peelers coming in but they will very tide dependant as we move into the weekend and some more extreme tides.  Monday we might see some more small SW but really inconsistent and maybe not even noticeable until Tuesday and into the 4th of July holiday.  (YEAH!)  That swell is super steep though so I think San Diego might miss a lot of the “action”.  It looks like some more long period SW swell might be headed our way in about 7-8 days.  I’ll let you know in a few days how those storms/swells are developing.

More sunshine and fairly light winds for the rest of the week and into the weekend.  Thurs and Fri look to be pretty dang hot and sunny actually  (mid/high 70s along the coast) with things cooling off a few degrees for the weekend (low 70s).  We’ll continue to see the patchy morning clouds but they seem to be breaking up pretty early.  Winds are calm in the morning with moderate west winds to cool you off by midday and into the afternoon.  We’ll start to see more tidal movement as we enter the weekend with a medium high in the early morning going out to a low midday and a big high tide push an hour or so before sunset.  Water temps are in the mid-60s…a bubble of warm water in N. County and kinda chilly down south with some upwelling going on south of LJ and even more south of Pt. Loma.

Well, it’s summer time so at least we have some great weather going into July and the short holiday week.  Not great for surf but it’ll happen!

Pray for surf!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       Don’t forget about the Summer Fun on the 101 this Friday and Saturday in Leucadia!  Bands, booths, and…oh yeah, FUN!

2)      The Thursday after the 4th of July always finds the local beaches and parks a TOTAL MESS!  You can one or two (or both) things…remind your friends to throw their party goodies in the garbage when they’re done celebrating our country’s independence and/or head to the beach to help with the Surfrider "Stay Classy Not Trashy" beach clean up.

3)      Cooking up some fresh seafood this summer?  Whether it’s a pan full of scallops or your fresh caught Pacific halibut check out these recipes from some reputable chef’s courtesy of Oceana.

4)      Come August 2nd there will be a few more heros on the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame. That includes names like Brewer, Ho, Cairns, Collins and Peterson.  For more details and the lowdown on who the inductees are click here.

5)      With warm weather and small surf this week you might be taking your grom or someone else’s grom out for their first surf session.  Check out what Tom Curran has to say about teaching your kid how to surf.  And don’t forget…there are a plethora of surf schools here in SD County.  And remember…the best surfer in the water is the one…getting barreled!!! (just kidding)…is the one having the most fun!

6)      (WARNING: Sales pitch)  Need more surf porn in your mailbox each month?  Get Surfer Mag AND Surfing Mag for just $12 a YEAR!  This is one sick offer!  You can barely buy 4 gallons of gasoline to get you to the beach for that much!  And no, I don’t get a free subscription for posting this I’m just trying to save you some dough!

7)      Debbie didn’t do Dallas but she surf did the Gulf Coast!  Check out some sweet pics of the pre-storm swell.  Bet you never thought you’d catch yourself wishing you were in North Carolina.  After this you just might!

Pretty non-spectacular waves but great weather!

Aloooooooha!  Boy, you can’t beat this weather hun?  There are some small peelers in the waist high range coming mostly out of the SW with some NW wind swell mixed in there as well.  We’re not really going to see much change throughout the week with a sprinkling of WNW Tues and Wed with left over SW and then some new SW around Thursday.  For the most part surf will stay in the knee to waist high range with the occasional inconsistent SW set in the chest high range late Thursday and into Friday.  Don’t get your hopes up though cause the weekend is looking pretty small.  We’re talking knee high kind of small.  Neither hemisphere is pumping out any mega swells in the near future either. The N Pac is quiet and the Southern Hemi has some activity but it doesn’t look like it’s going to send anything significant our way soon.  Well, at least we have nice sunny weather!

Speaking of weather…we’re seeing a pattern of early morning marine layer clearing by late morning and sunshine for most of the day.  Calm mornings with little to no wind and then mild to moderate west winds.  It’s our “usual” set up for the next week or so.  Air temps in the high 60s/low 70s and nighttime temps pretty warm in the high 50s.  Water’s in the mid 60s and super clear.  It’s worth grabbing a snorkel and mask to take a peek at all that life that’s swimming around us while we bob around in the ocean.  Moderate tide swings on the tail ends of the day with less movement midday.  The weekend will see much more extreme tides as we approach the next Full Moon early next week.

So, get out and enjoy the gorgeous beach weather even if it’s there’s no pumpin’ surf.  It’s ALWAYS worth a paddle…what else are you gonna do?

Cioa,
Mish

2)      Now playing at La Paloma…Taylor Steele’s new flick Here and Now.  You know you can’t miss one of Taylor’s movies…they’re just too good!  It’s got a little something for everyone.

3)      If you’re further south near Kearny Mesa Thursday evening you might want to check out the Center for Sustainable Energy’s FREE seminar on growing delicious food while being water-wise!  Saving you money, saving water and putting food on the table…and it’s FREE!

4)      This Wednesday is RAP DAY with the Surfrider Foundation!  Let’s Rise Above Plastic (get it…RAP!) and volunteer to help remind folks to use their reusable grocery bags (and don’t forget to wash them too!).  Four locations around town.

5)      And leaving you with something surfy of course…a free 16 minute surf flick called Distant Shores.
