SWEET...SW Swell!!!

Here it comes!  As of 10:30pm the buoys are juuuuuuuuuust barely starting to see the new swell with some 22+second swells showing up.  This means that we won’t see a huge change for Friday’s dawn patrol but that SW swell should fill in nicely through the day.  I think we’ll see some inconsistent waist high surf by early morning but size will jump up into the chest/shoulder high range with some HH sets possible by sunset.  Saturday we’re looking for the swell to hit its peak midday with some HH surf along a good portion of the county as there’s a decent amount of west in the swell   The better summer spots will see some OH+ surf and certainly the far north county, OC and LA will see the best surf.  Some nice energy showing up and good conditions so there will be some pretty fun surf around.  Tides will definitely make a difference so try to hit the tide push or turn around tides as they start to suck out.  Plenty of surf for Sunday as the swell backs off slightly…still shoulder/HH for most of the day and more consistent too.  Monday we’re still looking at chest/shoulder high with Tuesday seeing some consistent energy in the chest high range with some shoulder high sets not uncommon but definitely a fading swell.  We should also see some Hurricane Ileana surf but it’ll be a bit steeper as she headed north but still a bit more east then is ideal for our swell window.  Still, we should see some crossed up SW and SE sets on Sunday and into Monday.  There are still some smaller SW swells for the middle of the week (Wed/Thurs) that will keep surf in the waist’/chest high range and more S tropical storm/hurricane swell for the end of next week in the chest range…not as clean and juicy as this upcoming swell but some fun surf none-the-less!

Weather wise it looks like we’re stuck with sunny, gorgeous weather for the long holiday weekend.  Some patchy morning fog that will burn off to sunny blue skies by the mid-morning.  Winds look pretty calm in the mornings with some light to moderate west winds by the afternoon…pretty much the same old stuff we’ve had for the past week.  Air temps in the high 70s/low 80s along the coast.  Water temps are picking back up with the buoy readings in the 73 range again.  The line of S swells should help that as well.  We’ve got a Blue Moon (second full moon in one month) this Friday.  With the Blue Moon is coming some fairly good tide swings through the day with a drained out low a few hours before dawn and heading to a high mid morning then draining out to a pretty low (but not negative) tide in the late afternoon before picking back up to a higher tide in the early nighttime hours.  The dawn patrol and early afternoon sessions should be pretty fun as that swell fills in and peaks.

Looks like a great weekend for lots of surf around the county.  Be nice and share…everyone’s been waiting for some surf!

Surf with Aloha spirit!

No ocean notes...just go surf!   :-)

Small this week but nice SW for the long weekend!

Yo ho!  It’s been pretty small lately but all is not lost!  For our Labor Day weekend we’re going to have some surf!  Right now we’re looking at very small NW wind swell in the knee high range with some very small and mostly nonexistent steep S swell.  That wind swell will continue through the week until mid/late Thursday.  Late Thursday we’ll start to see some very long period and inconsistent SW swell.  Friday will be our turn around day with long period SW swells moving into our swell window and surf bumping up into the waist/chest high range by morning and picking up significantly throughout the day.  Look for shoulder/HH by sunset with even more swell for Saturday as the swell peaks in the HH+ range.  The angle on this swell will have some nice westerly direction in it so most SD beaches will be getting fun waves through the weekend. Sunday the swell backs down slightly but still be packing some juice along the coast.  The better summer spots will be feisty with OH waves steadily through the day.  Sunday might see some SE swell from Tropical Storm (soon to be Hurricane) Ilena as she moves more northerly and up past Cabo.  Monday will see a wee decrease in size but increase in consistency.   Tuesday will still see plenty of surf in the shoulder/HH range with the combo of two SW and SE swells.  Backing down more on Wed.  Looks like a few smaller S and SW swells following behind but the Friday-Tues swell looks to be the doozy of the bunch.  Lots of swell for all you hungry surfers!

Weather looks to be outstanding for the week and into the long weekend. Plenty of heat for the next few days, cooling down ever so slightly for the weekend.  We’re looking at high 70s again for Tues/Wed with some fairly moderate onshore west winds for Tuesday.  Then things cool down into the weekend…mid 70s and stay in the mid to high 70s for most of next week.  We’re seeing some big tide swings for this week as we approach Friday’s Full Moon…a BLUE MOON I might add…the second Full Moon this month! We’re looking at a medium high tide for the morning session and medium low early afternoon with a big high in the evening and more water movement through the day as we get closer to Friday.  Water temps have dipped a little with water in the 70-73 degree range and even a 69 down Pt. Loma’s way.  Hopefully that big SW will push more warm water back our direction.

Looks like some fun surf on the way for the weekend…wax ‘em if you got ‘em!

Lates,
Mish

OceanNotes:

1)       It’s still two weeks away but don’t forget to put the Paddle for Clean Water on your calendar for September 16th down at Ocean Beach!  Also enjoy the free breakfast, guest speakers, raffle and participate in the beach clean up!

2)      While we’ve got some downtime with all this small surf you might as well get all those aches and pains taken care of before the El Nino winter kicks in. Check out Surfer Mag’s Rotator Cuff Rehab article.

3)      The South Pacific has decided to hit the snooze button during the Billabong Pro.  On the latest day of competition Slater got ousted by…who?  Check out the slashing and ripping in shoulder to head high high barreling waves.

4)      If you haven’t already stood staring at the amazing photographs at this gallery you must check out Aaron Chang's gallery.  He just had his Grand Re-opening and the place is as spectacular as ever!   Beautiful work by an amazing photographer!

5)      And we’ll end with some big waves surfing from down in Peru where the Billabong Pico Alto finished up and Carlos Burle, a familiar face in the big wave arena, took top honors.  Some darn nice waves down there!  You know, it was only 35-40’…child’s play.

Did I mention it was small...?

This is an easy one.  The surf was small.   The surf is small.  The surf will stay small through most of next week.  We’re looking at super steep SW passing us by but really not much of anything anyway.  Mostly small NW wind swell on the books for this weekend and most of next week.  Surf in the waist high range at best over the next 5-6 days.  A moderate SW groundswell looks like it should hit late next week for the weekend.  Will give you the 411 as it gets closer but it’s looking good for next weekend.

Weather wise…it was sunny and humid.  It is sunny and humid.  It will continue to be sunny and humid.  LOL…no really, it’ll stay just about the same but with air temps plummeting down into the low 70s (brrrrrrrrrrrrr) for the weekend before picking up again next Monday.  Calm in the morning’s with light to moderate winds by midday.  Patchy clouds for the early AM and sunset sessions.  Water temps still in the low to mid 70s.  Still seeing some mild water movement in the morning but a big drop for the evening session as the tide drains out to a late night low.  Starting to see some bigger swings through next week as we move towards next Friday’s Full Moon.

Gotta blaze…

Mish

Last of the SW for a while...

Holy melting surf wax Batman!  The good news is this heat is supposed to break this week (yeh, I know…we really shouldn’t complain) but the bad news is that there’s not much swell going on after Wed.  Today we actually saw some fun SW swell. Monday we’re looking at more leftovers in the waist/chest high range out of the S with some NW wind swell lumped on top.  Tuesday is looking smaller with mostly waist high SW and a bit more wind swell and  Wednesday is looking yet smaller with waist high topping off the better sets.  Thursday look for knee high surf with some very steep SE swell hitting the buoys but missing most of SD County.  This will be another swell to head to OC or LA for with only a few stragglers making it into our swell window for the occasional waist high wave.  Same story for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  We’ll see some smaller wind swell on top of the near non-existent SE swell but surf will remain in the knee high range with the rare waist high wave. I’m not seeing any big swell makers in either hemisphere.  Storms are sliding off the ice shelf a little too close to Chile to be much use to us and the N. Pac has a few little squeakers that might actually throw more NW at us (El Nino?) in the upcoming weeks.

As I mentioned at the top of the forecast it looks like things might cool down a bit more this week.  Monday and Tuesday look to be warm and sunny again (high 70s along the coast) but then cooling to the mid70s and even low 70s by the end of the week and into next weekend.  We should also have some cooler nights which will make for better sleeping conditions.  Calm mornings with light to moderate SW winds for the afternoon.  The way the moisture is moving around we’re still going to see a lot of humidity so the beach will still be the place to be to cool things off.  That being said the water temps are a warm 72 degrees around town.  As we come off the New Moon last Friday there’s a low tide for the dawn patrol with a moderate high midday and then another decent low a few hours before sunset.  That should help things out with a little tide push for the sunset session.

Hope you all got some fun surf this weekend.  If you or little ones are heading back to school this week farewell to summer…but remember, we do live in Southern California…land of the Endless Summer (well, until El Nino hits!).

Have a great week everyone and please don’t forget to lather on that SPF!

Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       With all of this sunshine just blazing away and electricity bills soaring sky high perhaps more of you are thinking of going solar. SDG&E is here to help with their FREE Solar for Homeowners - Getting Started seminar.  Why waste a good thing?

2)       And if you don’t already have it on your phone it’s time to download (or update) the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch App.  It’s got up-to-date recommendations for ocean friendly seafood and now has locations of markets and restaurants where you can find sustainable seafood.

3)      While things aren’t exactly pumping down in Tahiti the pros still make it look better than a day in my office at the Billabong Pro Tahiti. How does it compare to yours?

4)      In the upcoming months San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) will be replenishing the sand at local beaches.  They will start moving equipment at IB this week, start moving sand the start of Sept and then work on North County beaches from early Oct to late November.  For more information and updates check out their beach sand replenishment website.

5)      And we’ll end on a nice surfy surfy note… Bali surf on YouTube!

Fading SW but more for the weekend!

Aloha all!  Is everyone exhausted from the heat, warm weather and fun surf this past weekend?  We’re just seeing the tail end of that SW swell with some NW wind swell lumped on top for Wednesday.  Surf backing down into the waist high range.  The quality and size will really vary depending on the tides as we near the New Moon on Friday. Thursday the surf backs down even farther to the thigh/waist high range.  Late Thursday we’ll see the start of the next SW swell. This one’s a little more steep than the previous swell but we should still see some fun waves.  Friday morning we’re looking at long interval waist/chest high surf.  Spots farther north and aimin’ south should pick up some pretty fun waves from this swell with slightly bigger sets in the shoulder/HH arena.  Tacked on to this swell will be some smaller FKA Hurricane Hector swell.  Hector came out from under Baja and swung in our general direction but sort of pooped out along the way.  We’ll see most of our energy coming from the original SW with some backup swell from Hector.   Shoulder high by the end of Friday and into Saturday.  Swell peaks Saturday but we’ll still see surf Sunday in the waist/chest range and then slightly smaller for the start of next week.  Looks like some longer period swell with more west in it for the start of next week.  No huge swells out there but it’ll give us something to ride for next week.

The heat’s finally starting to break at the coast.  We’ll be “dropping” down into the high-mid70s for the rest of the week and even slightly cooler (low 70s) for the weekend and next week.  We’ll still see some early morning clouds and late sunset clouds Wed with mostly sunshine Thursday and Fri.  A few more morning clouds coming back for the weekend.  Light and variable winds through the evening and mild for most of the day with a nice breeze by midday.  Water temperatures are a phenomenal 72-74 degrees.  Tides are not moving a lot in the morning hours…a mild high tide mid-morning to a medium low in the early afternoon but the super high tide  in the evening will surely slow some waves down a bit for those sunset sessions.

Count your blessings that it’s only 80 at the coast and 73 in the water…you could be in Phoenix where it’s forecasted to be 111 degrees tomorrow and not an ocean insight!

Mahalo!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       While many cities are banning plastic you can still take your used grocery bags and recycle them at recycling centers at the store.  And what happens after you stuff it into that big cardboard box?  I’m glad you asked…check out this Youtube video showing how plastic bags are recycled.
2)      As many of us are heading to places more tropical, to the in-laws for a visit or just getting away from it all there are a few things you can do to not only cut down on your carbon footprint but save yourself money by not burning electricity when you’re not even home to use it.  Here are a few tips from Earth911.com.

3)      It’s THAT time of year…find a friend who has the biggest flat screen TV and hang on to your seats.  It’s the Billabong Pro at Teahupoo! Last year the surf went RICHTER and the tow session they had during the “too big to surf” stoppage.  The forecast isn’t as good as last year but Teahupoo and pro surfers never disappoint!

4)      And in case you aren’t reading this from Padang Padang…Chris Ward won the Rip Curl Pro there last Friday in some pretty nice conditions.  Here, judge for yourself!

5)      And we’ll end with a clip of summer session a few years ago...Malibu with Joel Tudor and Alex Knost…two guys who really know how to longboard!

More SW and warm water ahead!

So, how’s your week going?  Getting some surf?  There’s more on the way!  We’re seeing some nice SW swell around town and peaking tomorrow (Sunday) with some fun chest/shoulder high waves.  There were some nice HH+ waves farther up north in the OC/LA area.  It’s also getting backed up by the storm formerly known as Hurricane Gilma.  She took a nice northerly turn and threw some fun hurricane energy our way.  That will help with size Sunday and will taper off on Monday.  The good news is that we’re looking at continuing energy from the SW with more chest/shoulder high surf through Monday with probably some slightly bigger sets at the top summer spots.   Continuing into the start of Tuesday before it starts to back down.  Waist/chest for Wednesday morning and then back into the knee/waist range with some chest high sets for Thursday.  Then we’re seeing the next nice SW ground swell make an appearance.  We’ll start seeing the long period stuff late Thursday but Friday and Saturday will return to chest/shoulder high waves with better sets for the more southerly facing summer breaks and with plenty of surf for the weekend.  I’m also keeping and eye on tropical storm Hector who’s moving out from under the tip of Baja but projecting surf more westerly and needs to move more northerly to really give us any surf.

The weather looks like it’s going to cooperate and stay nice and warm with a slight cooling trend from the low 80s to high 70s along the coast by midweek.  Still seeing some early morning marine layer a few clouds by sunset.  Calm mornings with midday breezes picking up out of the west.  Doesn’t look too bad but things will have a little bump on them in the afternoon.  Water temps are a tremendous 70s-72 degrees all along the coast.  For those fishermen out there the tropical species are starting to show up!  Just make sure you are mindful of the new Marine Protected Areas around town.  It’s not worth the $5000 ticket!  Tides are pretty flat for the first part of the day with more water movement in the second half of the day.  The high tide around sunset is slowing things down a little so prepare for that if you head out for a sunset session.  That will get more extreme as we move through the week.

Looks like a fun weekend of surf and even some nuggets of surf through the week.

Have fun and lather up that SPF!
Ciao!

1)       With fishing season going full throttle please be mindful and aware of the new marine protected areas along the coast.  If you have a fishing license it’s your responsibility to know the law.  Check out the Department of Fish and Game Marine Life Protection Act website with links to the mobile app of protection areas and Southern California page of maps and regulations.  It’s a minimum of $5000 if you get caught.

2)      And don’t forget about beach water quality. Here’s a great sight to bookmark…Coastkeeper’s San Diego County Beach Status website.  It’s got up to date information on beach closures and warnings.

3)      And as we cruise through August some folks are staring at “Back to School” sales with great dread…or not.  How about throwing some green into that backpack?  Here are 9 eco-savvy school supplies from Treehugger.  There are actually a lot more green school supplies out there too.  These days the big name companies like Staples, Target and Office Depot have green alternatives to many supplies.  Just look around.

4)      Getting down to all things surf…here’s a great new flick that premiered last week…Fox’s new movie No Filter .  But be warned…it’s only good if you like killer surf with guys rippin’ on it!  J

5)      San Diego hasn’t seen a ton of good swell this month yet BUT other spots along the coast and farther south certainly have!  Surfline’s got the proof Just click here and enjoy!
