Plenty more Spring WNW swell on the way...

Aloooooooooha!  With all of this sunshine and a gorgeous holiday weekend it sure feels like an island vacation to me (well, minus the mai tais and 80 degree water).  So, good news, my crystal wave ball seemed to be a little tarnished last time and we have some decent wind swell around town. It’s not epic but it’s certainly not flat.  There were some consistent chest high waves rolling in this afternoon…probably not the norm but they were there!  Most spots were showing in the waist high range but there were sets to be surfed!  Low energy NW wind swell will continue Wednesday with some small background SW ground swell too.  Surf will drop a bit in size Thursday as well, probably the smallest day all week with knee/waist high surf.  Early Friday we’re looking at some more WNW windswell with a hint of small SW groundswell to kick off the first official summer month.  Surf should bump up into the waist/chest high range with inconsistent SW sets.  More swell for the weekend with chest high Sat and then we’ll see some SW ground swell fill in Sunday with inconsistent surf in building from the waist/chest range and increasing Monday and Tuesday for some potentially fun summer swell in the shoulder high range.  We’ve got some time to watch what those swells will do.  The storm that is creating that swell isn’t ideal so keep your eyes open and I’ll let you know how next week will pan out.

We’re looking at more nice weather along the coast with some patchy coastal marine layer opening up to sunny skies and air temps in the mid to upper 60s.  Looks like less marine layer and more sunny skies for the weekend with similar air temps.  After some unseasonal winds and rain this weekend we’re still seeing some S/SW this week.  (I’ll refrain from going into a climate change discussion here…) For the most part we’ll see some glassy mornings and mild winds in the afternoon.  Water temps are still in the mid60s with a nice balloon of warm water (upper 60s) in N. County (see image below) and the lower 60s showing up south of La Jolla.  We’ll see some slightly more extreme tides starting late in the week as we approach the full moon next Monday.

Looks like there are some fun waves for this weekend with sunny skies and light winds!  No complaints here!

Lates,
Mish

Left overs for Sunday and then not much...

Greetings So Cal!  I hope you’re all having a splendid Memorial Day weekend so far.  Unfortunately the winds aren’t cooperating and we’re stuck with some pretty junky but sizable windswell. We’re on the tail end of the swell for Sunday with some waist high surf for the start of the day and decreasing through the day.  We’ll probably see some minor SW swell toward the end of the day…nothing sizable that will make a dent in the tiny NW though.  Look for Monday to be even smaller with almost no swell to speak of.  Got a SUP?  This will be the day to use it!  For most of the week we’re looking at small NW wind swell in the knee to waist high range at best.  And when I say “most of the week” I mean…ALL WEEK!  The next decent swell is looking to roll in around Sat.  That still a good week away but the models show some nice long period SW ground swell with even some NW combo’d in there as well.  Hoping to update early next week with good news!

The good news is that the weather’s going to get a little nicer…much less wind and even some midday sunshine.  Sunday looks to start pretty calm with very light S winds over night but hardly a wisp of wind come daybreak.  We’ll see moderate winds by midday and then the same patter again for Monday.  That means a good SUP paddle day for Monday morning!  We’ll see a return of some patch fog Sun night and into Monday with some sunshine midday.  That will be our pattern for most of the week with a little SW wind midweek. Air temps in the mid60s all week as well.  We’re looking at a pretty low tide in the morning with a medium high in the mid-afternoon as we head to the full moon next weekend.  Water temps have chilled down a degree or two with all of this wind but still very pleasant.

Looks like Sunday morning is the day to catch the last of the swell for most of the week.

I’m on it…are you?
Mish

P.S.  Don't forget to pick up a piece of trash on your way out of the water this weekend!

Ocean Notes:

1)       How well do you know your fish?  Well, half of the fish tested in SoCal isn’t what its label says.  You think you’re paying top dollar for some tuna?  Maybe not?  Get the inside scoop here.

2)      And with the world trying to become a little more green these days even rock stars are going their part. Check out this interview  with Adam Gardner from the band Guster and co-founder of the nonprofit group Reverb, which works with bands on making their tours more environmentally sustainable.

3)      And the latest on the ban on plastic bags…well, if a whole state does it don’t you think it’s worth a try?  Congratulations Hawaii  Hawaii!  And whoa… Los Angeles  too!?!?!?!?   Yup, Tuesday LA became the biggest city to bag plastic bags.  By the end of the year you’ll have to scoop your pooches poop with something else!

4)      And some of us loafers sit around waiting for surf to show up at our doorsteps but no, not Occy…not only is he on the road but he’s looking to win a third world title!  Yes, OCCY!!!!

5)      And to leave you all with something to dream about…thanks Surfline…you rock!

The big BLOW...calming over the weekend.

Quick one tonight… winds are making a mess of things tonight and Friday…thru Sat. Howling S and NW winds until early early Sat morning.  Unfortunately there’s some decent sized wind swell with this and even some SE swell for late Fri and into Sat.  I don’t think it’ll be clean enough to surf until late Sat and the swell will be tapering off pretty quickly.  Look for shoulder/HH-OH and junky Friday with shoulder/HH out of the NW wind and some background S groundswell from ol’ Hurricane Bud for Saturday.  (You’re stoked if you’re in Mainland Mex…!)  Waist with occasional chest high for Sunday with messy knee/waist high wind swell for most of the first half of next week. Looks like some S on the way for the end of next week.  More details tomorrow!

Big winds, some drizzle and cool air temps in the mid/low 60s for Fri and Fri night.  More clearing for Sat as the winds taper off Sat after midnight. Hoping things will clean up but we’ll still see some light S winds through the day and into Sun.  Sunday morning looks the cleanest with very little winds overnight and through the morning.  Clearing skies and air temps only in the mid60s all weekend.  Water temps in the mid 60s…pretty nice…a little cooler down in the southern half of the county though.  Drained out or pretty low tides for the morning sessions still with medium tides for the rest of the day.

Gotta run but it looks like Fri is a wash for surf due to winds and Saturday might be ok with some left over bump with Sunday being the cleanest but with quickly fading swell.  How picky are you?  ;-)

Gotta run…

Mish

NW wind swell...and wind

Cheers mateys!  Sorry, busy busy work schedule has been boggin’ me down so my computer time is scare.  I’ll try to make up for it now…well, the bad news is that tomorrow will be pretty small as far as surf goes. We have the tail end of a crazy steep SSW that’s basically passing us by and the dregs of a small NW wind swell.  That translates into small bumpy surf to start the day…knee/waist high is my best estimate for Tuesday.  The good news is that we’re getting more surf starting late Tuesday and picking up and up and up Wed thru Friday.  By Wed morning we’re looking at some waist high waves with some chest high sets here and there. Remember, this is a wind swell so not the nicely times sets like a groundswell.  Increasing swell through the day will deliver some chest/shoulder high surf by evening and we’re looking at HH+ surf for Thursday and Friday with surf backing down to shoulder high early Sat and waist/chest by Sat evening.  The not-so-good-news is that most of that swell will be tainted by winds making for less than ideal conditions.  (Don’t hate the messenger!)  Sunday is looking to drop off significantly with a few lingering waves in the waist high range for the morning sessions and then knee high for the start of next week.  There are some more NW wind swells that aren’t too impressive milling about in the N. Pac but the Southern Hemi is looking like it might just produce a nugget if the projections continue on their current course.  We even have a Tropical Depression that isn’t going to deliver any juicy into our swell window but it’s a good sign of things to come…keep your fingers and toes crossed!

I think Spring is lingering into our summer this year as the winds will be our nemesis this week.  As the swell picks up the SW winds will as well.  Tues winds will pickup out of the S by mid-morning.  Wednesday morning, with that incoming wind swell should be a good window for surf as things start off calm but get pretty gusty in the afternoon.  Interestingly, the winds look to be out of the SE for a good part of Thursday with gusty winds but mainly out of the SE.  There are a few choice spots in the county that will hold SE wind quite nicely.  Friday the winds turn a little more S and SW making for messier conditions as that wind swell peaks.  I think Thursday morning will have the best window for that swell…and perhaps Friday morning early before it gets REALLY gusty.  Luckily the water temps are remaining warm…low/mid 60s all around town.  Tides are making the swing a fair bit as we arrive at the New Moon tomorrow.  Negative dawn patrol tides push up to medium highs around midday and then back out to a medium low for the late afternoon session.

Looks like there will be a few windows of surf this week.  Catch them early before the winds get on the fun NW wind swell.

That’s all she wrote!
Mish

Small SW and NW wind swell

Cheers San Diego!  We’ve had some patchy surf with some pretty fun windows over the past few days.  That SW is definitely on the outs right now with some left over NW wind swell also in the mix.  Knee to waist high surf this afternoon with the occasional belly button high set here and there.  Look for more smaller leftovers Thursday morning with knee/waist high surf.  The afternoon should see a small WSW filling in that will show up a little better Friday morning and peak in the chest/shoulder high range early in the afternoon.  That short lives surf will leave us some smaller but fun waist/chest high surf for Saturday and smaller for Sunday.  Expect some NW wind swell to be mixed in there as well…more lumps and bumps.  We should see the beginning of some new and prominent wind swell for the start of next week and into the middle of the week.  The southern hemi is quieting down for a bit so it seems the Spring winds might by our only hope for sizable surf next week.  Stay tuned!

We’re still looking at some nice weather…not too hot, not too cold…along the beach anyway. Early morning patchy marine layer with clearing midday for Thurs and sunny skies and earlier clearing for Fri and Sat with marine layer returning for Sunday.   Air temps in the mid60s along the coast.  We’ll continue to see some SW winds tonight and throughout Thursday.  Slightly gusty SW winds for Fri and Sat.  Funky little eddies sitting offshore this time of year eh?  Well, at least the water’s warming up…low to mid 60s in SD county.  Tides aren’t too bad but should start to get a little extreme over the weekend.  The biggest tide swings luckily are happening overnight as we approach the new moon on Monday.

That’s all she wrote folks!  Crystal ball is closed for this entry!

Lates!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       This Sunday evening (:30pm) will be a cool solar eclipse.  The trick is to be someplace that doesn’t have a marine layer (so, not the SD coastline) and is high up (again, not the San Diego coastline).  And don’t stare at the sun as the eclipse is going on because you’ll burn your eyeballs!  Get “eclipse sunglasses” or watch it through a pinhole in a piece of cardboard shining on the ground (stare at the ground not thru the pinhole).  Click here for more info!  http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/may/12/how-prepare-big-eclipse-may-20/?sciquest
2)      Ripping and shredding…if you like those two things then watch the final day of surf at the Billabong Pro…congrats AGAIN to Jon Jon.  He’s making his move Slater…whatcha gonna do about it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Vr5d7dRaxoo
3)      Got nothing to do this weekend?  Why not run a triathalon? Or bike race for 103 miles? Or the Bike Paddle and Swim? All of this AND the Sports Expo can be found at the Encinitas Sports Festival at Moonlight Beach Saturday and Sunday.  Details here… http://encinitasrace.com/esff.html
4)      And speaking of biking…this Friday is BIKE TO WORK DAY!  All over SD county will be Pit Stop stations for free drinks snacks and encouragement as you peddle your way to work.  Check out www.iCommute.com for more info and you can even sign up to win prizes!

New SW and a bit of wind

Oh boy…time flies just way too fast.  I think I need to move to a planet further from the sun so the days would be longer and I can get more done.  Anyway, that new SW swell is filling in.  We’re seeing some super inconsistent SSW swell that unfortunately is combined with some super short period NW wind swell.  That makes for variable sized waves all over the coast.  Look for waist/chest high at the N and W facing beaches tomorrow with some chest/shoulder and HH sets surf at the better summer spots in the southern end of the county and the very north end of the county…or head to the OC or LA.  Should be some fun surf as the storm that created this had some decent energy with it.  Swell peaks tomorrow (Tuesday) with plenty of surf still for early Wed and starting to fade over the second half of the day.  Smaller waist high surf for Thursday with more NW wind swell for the rest of the week and into the weekend.  We’ll have a little bump up Friday with that wind swell…surf in the chest/shoulder range.  This will be low energy and consistent but not the classic groundswell.  Saturday looks like the second half of that wind swell with waist high surf and the occasional chest high set. Either way it’ll be ridable. Sunday will be waist/chest…the  remains of the wind swell and Monday start out in the knee/waist zone but it looks like some SW swell will help things into the waist/chest and shoulder high at the better summer spots.  There’s a nice tropical storm down Baja’s way that’s a nice indicator of our potential summer of swell.  With the water as warm as it is right now we could have a nice summer of hurricane swells. This current storm isn’t panning out to give us any surf but it’s early.

We’re looking at similar weather all week with Springtime/early summer conditions that include early morning and late evening marine layer with some spots of nice sunshine midday. Unfortunately it also includes some winds tonight and into the morning with tomorrow looking like the windiest day of the week…gusty out of the W.  We’ll see more sunshine towards the end of the week and even more for the weekend but ironically slightly cooler air temps.  We’re looking at high 60s Tues, low 70s thru Fri and then mid60s for the weekend.  Tides are mellowing out with a medium low in the early morning and a not-so-low low tide midday.  That should provide a nice push for the evening session but with a bit of bump on it from the days wind.  Well, we can’t complain too much because the water’s already a balmy 63-65 in spots.

Some fun surf…wishing the wind would bugger out but make the best of it!

Lates!
Mish

Nice SW on it's way for the Sunday!

Super fast one today…NW wind swell Friday in with some smaller waist high surf.  A small steep S will pass most of SD County Sat with knee/waist high in SD but the far N. County/OC and LA should see some bigger waist/chest+ surf.  Look for surf to pick up Sun and into Monday with a very long period SW ground swell.  Surf should make it to the chest/shoulder range with more west in it so more west and south facing beaches will show.  That swell holds thru Tues, Wed and noticeably tapers off Thurs

Looks like continuing AM and late PM marine layer with some sunshine hoping to peek thru midday.  The coast might just stay socked in after Friday though.  Air temps only in the mid 60s.  Calm winds Fri AM with light/moderate west winds by midday and then some gusty west winds by midday Sat becoming calm again for Sun.  Still some fairly good swinging tides with the low mid-morning pushing to a medium high in the mid-afternoon and back down to a medium low an hour or so after sunset.

Gotta blaze…more updates over the weekend as we start to see more of that new SW!

Oh boy...more S!

Hola amigos!  Sorry, stepped out for a little breather and wasn’t able to get to a computer to pump out a forecast for y’all til now.  We’ve got a nice but steep S groundswell starting up right now.  It’s super inconsistent seeing as it’s traveling many thousands of miles to get here.  Surf is hitting the waist/chest zone with spots north of O’side are seeing some bigger sets in the shoulder high range as we see that swell fill in Tuesday.  In between we’ll still see some shorter period surf in the waist high zone out of the S but that’s even more steep than the new swell.   Look for that S to stick around for awhile as it peaks Wed with some shoulder high surf and probably some HH sets at the best summer spots.  That swell will fade ever so slowly with waist/chest surf for Thurs and waist high for Friday.  Friday we should also see a hint of short period NW swell which will help the west and north facing beaches with some waist/chest high surf.  The smallest surf looks like Saturday with some knee/waist high surf.  Sunday a new and fairly energetic looking SW swell will start to fill in. This looks to have some very long period surf for Sunday and really pick up Monday and Tuesday.  While this swell is still a ways away we’re hoping for some solid SW groundswell with better angle for more beaches and some HH+ surf.

On top of the SW swell train heading right for our station it looks like the few weeks of S swells has really pushed some warm water our way.  Water temps are in the mid60s already and with more S swell, well, I’m hoping for even warmer water!  The not so good new is that we’re still having some overcast weather with patchy fog tonight with some clearing along the coast and then patch again in the evening.  This pattern’s going to hang out for most of the week with Wed being the warmest (and sunniest) day until the weekend rolls around.  Look for some low 70s most of the week to mid70s (Wed).  Low 70s but more sunshine for the weekend.  More good news…not to much wind in the forecast.  A slight bit of west winds tomorrow afternoon, calm in the late afternoon/evening and early morning and turning out of the SE for Tues and Thurs afternoon.  As we’re coming off that Super Moon Saturday we’re seeing some pretty drained out tides in the early morning with a medium high and light tide push  midday before turning around to a medium low in the late afternoon/evening.

Looks like some fun surf and maybe, dare I say, it’s shaping up to be a nice summer of surf!

Enjoy it!

Ocean notes:

1)       For those of you who might have forgotten it’s Mother’s Day this Sunday. Luckily it’s not too late to get your Mom a little token of your affection.  Peruse through Treehugger’s list of ideas (http://www.treehugger.com/slideshows/culture/green-gift-guide-mothers-day/) or just check out these local gems made of sea glass by a local North County ripper (and Mom!) http://www.wix.com/poppydeanda/goldenpoppydesigns#! .  You can stop off at the airport, Encinitas or Carlsbad if you want to see them in a shop.   Trust me, they’re beautiful and capture a bit of the ocean’s energy in every piece.
2)      If you’re interested in a good read, sometimes quick, sometimes longer, sometime political, sometimes artistic then check out “Jim’s blog”.  It’ll keep you in touch with all that goes on with the ocean.  http://www.surfrider.org/jims-blog
3)      And now for some surf porn…Trestles, south swell…if the term “A-frame” gets your heart beating a little faster then click here.  http://www.surfermag.com/photos/lowers-pro-finals-day/#04c86283d7
4)      And we’ll thank Surfline yet again for providing this delightful collage of gorgeous pics of Mex.  Most of us have been there.  Most of us can tell a few wild stories of “what happened in Mex…” and most of us can’t wait to go back.  http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/best-bet-may-mexico_70018/
