First good South for San Diego

Hola amigos! Actually typing this on the way to the airport...gonna be away for a little over a week. The good news for you is that a sweet new SW swell is on it's way. We're looking at some nice groundswell to start filling in late Monday with size picking up into the waist/chest range but very inconsistent for early Tuesday. Swell builds through Thursday peaking early in the HH/OH range at the better summer spots.  Swell fades as we approach the weekend with some shoulder/HH to end the week.  Still lingering swell through the weekend though.

Looks like we're in for a little fog as things heat up inland this week. Mostly cloudy in the morning with some clearing midday.Low 70s for the first half of the week along the coast. Thursday looks like the best day with air temps in the low 80s. Winds don't look too bad with calm winds in the morning and some mild to moderate winds in the afternoon.  Water should warm up too!

Gotta jet!

Stay wet San Diego!

Giving my blog a little more life!

Revamping my blog...

I'll still do the forecast and report but the page will be more "LIVE" with local weather updates and continuing ocean notes on things I think are important for a happy surfer...clean water, creatures that live in the ocean, clean planet, good healthy food, planet friendly living and of course great surf stories from around the internet.
We'll start with this story...one with a happy ending after a surfer treads water for 27 hours after falling overboard in Indo.  Damn, 27 hours!

Weather update:
Looks like Tuesday night will be kind of windy as that low pressure moves in.  Mild to moderate south winds all night and through Wed with winds calming Wed night.  That means conditions Wednesday will be messy after the wind blows all night.  Slight chance of showers Wed night but otherwise partly sunny both Wed and Thurs during the day. A few clouds for the weekend but warmer air temps.

Steep S and NW windswell then a SW

Fly-by South…that’s what I call it.  I’m referring to the SE groundswell that’s passing us by right now.  Most spots in SD County are seeing some small NW windswell with a little S if you’re at a good south facing spot, not a lot of energy and a bit less on tap for the start of the week on Monday.  Look for waist high from the wind swell around most of the county and waist with occasional chest for the S at the top summer sports.  The good news is that a new swell is on tap to fill in late Monday. This is still a pretty steep swell but it has a slightly better angle on it and a bit more energy. That means the better summer spots should see a bit of new S on Tuesday, waist high with building waist/chest high sets.  Of course, it will be a typical inconsistent south and again, steep so missing a lot of SD.  Swell fills in all day and peaks early early Wed.  Look for some more consistent shoulder/HH surf in north N. County at a few select juicy summer breaks along the coast.  Things taper off for Thurs with chest/shoulder high surf and then more so again on Friday with surf in the waist high range.  By the weekend we’re looking at some pretty small knee/waist high surf at best from a new S and a little NW wind swell as a late season system moves down from the north and stirs things up a bit.

Weather sure was nice this weekend!  Unfortunately that’s all about to change.  More sunshine and air temps in the mid-60s for Monday and then a few more clouds and slightly cooler air temps for the middle part of the week as that weather system passes though.  Believe it or not we even have a chance of showers for Wed night and into Thurs.  Look for things to clear up a little for the weekend though.  As is par for the course for the Spring doldrums we’re looking at SW winds for a good part of the week.  Your best bet will be the earlier session before the winds put some bump on the water.  Winds don’t get too out of hand for the first half of the week.  I expect them to pick up a bit as that weather front moves through on Wed night so Thursday might not be an optimal day.  Will update the weather forecast Wed.

Water temps are still a little brisk with the last bit of wind stirring up the cooler water.  We’re still seeing some mid to high 50s along the coast.  The lower afternoon tides will definitely bring some of that cold stuff up with the higher tide feeling a few degrees warmer.  Interestingly, the buoys offshore are reading in the low 60s.  As we head towards the Full Moon this weekend we’re starting to see a bit more tidal movement but nothing horribly extreme.  Look for a medium high tide in the early morning dropping out to a near-zero low tide in the early afternoon and rolling back up to a fairly high tide for the evening sessions.

Looks like Tues/Wed are the best days this week for some fun surf!  Hit a summer spot for ideal swell direction in SD or head up the 5 to OC/LA!

Short on time tonight…sorry, no Ocean Notes!

Stay wet San Diego!

More windswell then sunshine and S swell!

Geeeeeeeez, this wind is unrelenting!  We’re completely missing out on the S swell  which is also being bombarded by sizable NW wind swell.  More waning NW wind swell for Wednesday in the waist/chest range.  Still very short period with more winds, initially out of the NE but then blowing out of the W…and I mean BLOWING!  Both swells drop a little Thursday, starting in the waist/chest range and dropping into the waist high range with less wind swell and even less S swell.  Friday is looking cleaner but the smallest day of swell with the last bits of NW wind swell and S swell giving us surf in the knee/thigh high range.  It is however forecasted to be about 80 degrees.  As the good weather continues into the weekend we’re looking at a new small and steep S swell.  I’m thinking this will miss a lot of SoCal.  Perhaps some knee/waist at the better summer spots.  Same for Saturday and Sunday and into the start of Monday.  Towards the end of Monday it looks like we should see another S swell.  This swell looks to have a slightly better angle then previous swells and a lot more energy.  Looking for surf to pick up into the chest high range with some shoulder high sets at the start of the week.  The swell continues with more activity in the southern hemi.

With all the blustery winds the surf has been a mess with the occasional clean shoulder here and there.  Look for more of the same for the next two days.  Lots of wind…both NE and W and cold overnight air temps in the high 40s/low 50s.  Things calm down Thursday night as a high pressure system kicks in and a nice hot Santa Ana kicks in.  Light E winds early through Friday with air temps in the low 80s and humidity dropping.  Gusty E winds Friday night and more sunny skies, NE winds and air temps into the high/mid 70s for Saturday and Sunday.  Sunny skies but slightly cooler air temps into the work week but no clouds for awhile.  Tides aren’t moving much through the day with the most movement happening as the mid-morning low moves up to the mid-afternoon medium high.  Very little…almost no movement in the afternoon/evening.  Water temps have dropped a bit after all of this wind.  We’re seeing some high 50s.  With more wind I’d expect the temps to drop a little more.

Looks like the end of the week and weekend are gonna shape up with some really nice weather with a little steep surf out of the S.

Stay wet San Diego!

Wind swell and then steep south

Greetings SoCal!  Wind swell is the name of the game for the next few days.  We’re seeing a little bump up in size at least and conditions have been on and off…good and bad.  Look for some waist high NW wind swell for Sunday and a little more swell for Monday…waist/chest.  Looking for a new S groundswell to start filling in late Monday.  Size should start to pickup overnight and Tuesday morning looks like some super inconsistent chest/shoulder high surf at the best summer spots.  The angle on this S is aimed pretty steep so most of SD County will probably be missed by this swell and will see more NW wind swell for most of the week.  Tuesday the peaks in the afternoon with some shoulder/HH surf.  Then we’re looking for the surf to back off Wed…starting in the chest/shoulder range and dropping into the chest high range.  Thursday we’ll keep seeing more waist/chest high surf to start the day with waist high for the evening session on into Friday.  The southern hemi will be sending another S swell but the angle is completely wrong for San Diego and even most of OC.  North LA maybe but not much more of SoCal.

Oh Mother Nature is just cruising through spring weather.  She’s taking her sweet time.  Cloudy skies, more south winds and even a little chance of drizzle is on the books for the next few days.  Tuesday is the first day that we’ll see a bit more sunshine.  Air temps in the low 60s/high 50s thru Tues.  Wed is our turn around day with sunshine air temps in the high 60s/low 70s around the coast.  Thurs and Friday are looking like beach days…high 70s. Slightly lower air temps but still plenty of sunshine for the weekend.  South winds thru Tues and then more N and W winds take over as that sunshine pushes its way to our coastline. SE winds forecasted for Monday morning.   S winds slide back into town Sunday.  Tides are moving the most in the morning with a near zero low tide for the dawn patrol and moving to a medium high by early afternoon then back out again very slightly in the early evening.  Water temps are creeping up ever so slightly…high 50s.  Probably a little warm up later this week as we have some sunshine and that S swell pushes some warm water up.

Finicky conditions for the next few days but some nice weather on tap for the end of the week with the tail end of that steep groundswell.

Heading for the beach next weekend…SPF y’all!
