NW wind and then some decent SW

The Northern Hemi is coming thru with a little life to keep our boards wet and arms loose.  We’re seeing some NW wind swell that was actually kinda fun today (it’s all relative right?).  Look for fading NW wind swell in the waist high range Monday with the last bits of it on Tuesday.  We’re also seeing the last tidbits of SW swell with the occasional south swinger sneaking in…much less of that for Monday.  Wednesday is looking small again in the knee/waist high range and then we should see some new medium sized SW swell that will have some decent angle on it so more of the county will see some surf.  The surf should bump up into the wait high range Thursday…inconsistent with the start of the swell and peak Friday morning.  Look for waves in the chest high range and some slightly bigger sets at the best summer spots.  Saturday decreases back into the waist/chest range but slightly more consistency and Sunday looks to be waist high.  The next swell is mighty steep for Monday and looking to pretty much fly right by SD and hit farther up north in the LA area.  I’m not even sure how much of it will hit OC.  The storm that created that swell is pretty close to South America…not a good spot for our swell window.

Pretty consistent weather up ahead…a little evening and morning fog clearing with sunshine midday and mild to moderate winds.  A bit of south winds late tomorrow and Tuesday but otherwise out of the west as usual.  Air temps in the low 70s and water temps in the high 60s and a spotty 70 reading here and there.  Be prepared for some sticky humidity as a nice high pressure system is hanging out with us but drawing up some moisture from Mexico this week.  Some pretty good tide swings through the night and in the early and late hours of the day but midday tides aren’t too crazy.  The Full Moon is Thursday…just in time for the new swell…and we’ll have a lot more water movement even midday by then.

Hope everyone had a great weekend and got some water time in one way or another!

Alooooooooooooha!

Pretty small surf for awhile...

I blinked and missed it!  Did anyone see that swell?  If you did you must have been up in Malibu cause it mostly missed San Diego.  With waist high waves and a few chest high sets at best in N. County things are pretty quiet around here in the ocean these days.  The not so good news is that Friday, Saturday and Sunday aren’t looking promising for much swell.  We’ll see some small SW late Sat that will put the knee high waves from Friday in the waist high range and then things will get small again.  A random little low pressure system is actually going to send us some NW wind swell (beggars can’t be choosers!) for Monday and Tuesday with another blip of waist high surf.  Then things quiet down for Wed…knee high again, with late Thursday seeing our next SW swell that will have much more west in it as it peeks out from behind New Zealand except that the models have most of the energy blocked behind NZ and kind of petering out by the time it hits our swell window.  I’m still hoping for some waist/chest high surf by the end of next week.  So, until then…log it and enjoy the nice weather.

Did someone say weather?  Yes, we’re looking at much of the same type of weather through the weekend and into next week.  Some early morning clouds making way for sunshine along the coast and air temps in the low to mid 70s.  Winds should be fairly calm in the morning but might get a little windy like today by midday.  Some NW breeze blowing Friday night so Saturday dawn patrol might not be super glassy…but there won’t be much to surf so…go figure.  Calming winds for Sat and Sun.  Water temps have cooled a little with still some low 70s around N. County but some cooler high 60s in the southern parts of the county.  Look for some bigger tide swings as we approach the Full Moon on Tuesday.  Mostly the late morning low pushing up to the late afternoon high.  That’ll become more apparent towards Sunday.

So in the grand scheme of things we’re not seeing much surf any time soon BUT…the weather’s gorgeous and the water’s still pretty warm!  There’s still a lot of ways to enjoy the ocean!

I’m outta here!
Mish

Ocean Notes:

1)       My quick list of 10 other things you can do in the ocean when there is not surf…go snorkeling…swim...go fishing…teach a munchkin to surf…take a long walk/ride during low tide…take a nap on the beach…sunbathe naked (ok, maybe this one isn’t for everyone!)…stand on the cliffs and look for whales…better yet…paddle a SUP out and get a closer look…and last but not least…do a beach clean up and set a good example for everyone!

2)      And here’s one you might have seen as it went viral on the internet and news yesterday…fly fisherman, Alex Beck, hooked an estimated 500-700lb mako shark off the San Diego coast at a catch and release fly fishing fund raising tournament for shark research put on by my husband and I called the Flying Mako Tournament.  Alex gets pretty excited about the flying mako on the end of his line…some racy language…turn down the volume if there are kiddos around.

3)      And if you liked that last one… here's another video of the same shark as it does a drive by next to and under the boat.  That’s a BEEEEEEEG fish!   Thanks to captain Mark Martin for the footage!

4)      And while it’s flat…why not go tide pooling during the negative low tide (well, when it’s daylight low tide…2am might not be such a good idea).  Guess who make Treehuggers list of 8 Best North American Beaches for Exploring Tide Pools!

5)      Ok, before I move onto something more surfy…you just have to check out this recipe for peach and tomato salsa.  Uh…YUM!

6)      And NOW…for something more surfy!  If you missed watching them live you should check out some pics from the World Masters surf contest down in Nicaragua this past week.  These guys may be old in the eyes of a lot of groms but they still rip!

7)      And we’ll close with these monsters coming in down in Tazzyland at Shipsterns…really…really someone thinks it’s a good idea to paddle out in a wave that looks like Godzilla’s claw about ready to smash them?  REALLY?

SW filling in with some fun surf!

Ah, SW swell…you are so elusive…unless you know some good south facing beaches…then you’re stoked.  This swell has a bit more steepness in it than I thought it would so many spots aren’t seeing a lot of swell but the best south facing summer spots are finally seeing some fun waist/chest high surf this afternoon.  Tuesday looks like more swell but from about the same angle but more consistency.  Look for waist/chest and some shoulder high surf at the better summer spots around SD County again and the swell peaks in the midmorning.  Some stand out head high sets at best.  Throw a little NW wind swell in there to add a little lumpiness into the action.  Things will start to fade out in the evening and Wed surf will back down to waist/chest with waist and the occasional chest high set for Thurs.  Friday looks like thigh to waist high and only some knee to waist high local windswell for the weekend.  We might see some long period SW with much better direction squeak through over the weekend but it really won’t fill in until later in the week with yet another SW behind that.  The size on both are still questionable with the second swell looking slightly more promising.  Stay tuned!

Weather wise we’re looking at more clearing tomorrow and Wed compared to the past few days of overcast muggy weather.  That just means it’ll be sunny and muggy as the humidity will stick around for at least 3-4 more days.  Winds will be light at night so glassy morning surf should prevail.  Moderate onshores for the afternoon without much glass off for the evening sessions.  Tides will definitely be a factor as we’re still seeing some pretty low tides pushing up to a medium high tide midday and then zipping back out to a medium low y sunset.  Water temps are pretty darn nice right now especially if you’re surfing midday when the sun pokes out!  We’re looking at high 60s and low 70s all around town.

I think that does it for me…look for some fun mid-morning and late afternoon/evening steep south swell tomorrow and Wed.

Adios amigos!
Mish

Some fun SW late Sat and into Sun

Hola SoCal!  We’re seeing the tail end of some smaller SW swell that provided us with some surface peelers.  We’re looking at Saturday to start off small in the knee/waist high range but we should start to see that new SW by sundown.  Look for super inconsistent sets by sundown in the waist high range with slightly larger surf in the waist/chest range by Sunday morning and through the day.  Surf will pick up steadily through the day but really make it’s mark on Monday with waves in the chest high range and slightly bigger at the best summer spots.  Tuesday we’ll continue to see surf in the chest/shoulder range…farther N. County and OC/LA will see some HH surf.  Wednesday and Thursday will continue to see fun surf and then things will start to back down late Thursday and back into the waist/chest range for Friday.  The weekend looks smaller but the forecast is not grim.  Seems to be some more SW swell looming in the distance.  Small for next weekend but perhaps some new SW for the start of next week!

We’re seeing mostly clear skies as we wake up with minimal winds through the day.  Look for a lot of the same through the weekend.  The biggest change will be Sunday as the remnants of the last Hurricane Faaaaaaabio pass through town so we’ll see more humidity, some clouds and a chance of thunder storms.  Not much wind activity associated with that though so look for some nice beach and surf weather for the entire weekend and into next week.  Air temps in the mid to low 70s along the coast.  Some patch clouds in the morning but should burn off pretty early.  Water temps are fantastic…high 60s and low 70s everywhere.  Tides are pretty low (negative low) for the early morning dawn patrol with some decent but not extreme movement midday and then a nice push for the high tide for the sunset session.   Keep your eye out for the big black/purple jellies (you can’t miss ‘em) and sting rays.  Shuffle shuffle shuffle!

Looking forward for some serious summer fun this weekend and well into the week!

Aloooooooooooooha!

Ocean notes:

1)  This Sunday is the Carlsbad Lagoon Day walk/Run to raise money to preserve the lagoon.  Don't worry, you don't have to do a marathon...there's a 1.2mile casual walk, 2 mile fun run/walk and 3.5 mile run/walk around Agua Hedionda lagoon.  All for fun and all routes end at the BBQ from Tip Top meats at the Discovery Center on Cannon Road.  For more info email lisa@aguahedionda.org or show up on the day of the event or click here for more info.

2)  This is awesome…if there’s anyone I would want leading me into the line up at Trestles it would be Kelly Slater…ESPECIALLY if I was blind!  Check out Slates and blind Brazilian surfer Derek Rabelo catching a few together.  Head high and really feeling the waves…sweet!

Shortie...new swell hitting Saturday

Had some fun and surprising surf the past few days as Faaaaabio threw some swell our way.  Can't complain.  Fading SW swell throughout the county with waist/knee high expected over the next few days.  Next swell will be Saturday with some new SW groundswell that should bump things into the chest high range by Sunday and a little bigger for Monday through Wednesday.  That swell has some nice westerly direction in it too so more beaches will benefit.

Light winds over the next few days with patchy early morning marine layer clearing by midday.  Air temps in the low 70s through the rest of the week and into the weekend.  Warmer water on tap...high 60s and the random 70 or so here and there.  WOOHOOOOOO!!!  Bigger tidal movement as we hit the New Moon...mostly in the middle of the night though.

Stay wet San Diego!

Quiet at first but some weekend fun!

Helloooooooooooooooooo SoCal!  Did I mention I went out of town?  I think I forgot…sorry.  Anyway, looks like we’ve got some combo swell on the buoys right now…some pretty steep south from the Southern Hemi AND from formerly known as “Hurricane”…now Tropical Storm Faaaaaaaaaaabio.  Most of the swell is flying past SD County with barely any of it making it into even the best summertime spots.  More of the same for Tuesday with maybe a hint of swell of Faaaaaaaaaaaaabio (sorry, I just can’t help myself) as he make a slight turn in our direction but weakens as he heads north.  I’m hoping we’ll see at least some waist high surf by late Tues and into Wed from him before he totally poops out and just brings us humidity and some thundershowers.  Thursday is looking pretty small (with maybe some Faaaaaaaaaaaaabio swell) as is Friday and Saturday with knee high surf at best as we roll into the weekend.  Now late Saturday we should start to see some decent and painfully inconsistent waist high surf out of the S as our next swell starts to show up.  A medium sized SW ground swell will fill in for Sunday with waist/chest high surf and some shoulder high nuggets at the better summer spots.  Swell holds and builds a smidge for Monday and into Tuesday before it starts to fade.  So, just hang in there for the weekend (don’t we always!) and you should be rewarded for your patience come Funday Sunday!

Weather wise we’re looking at more early clouds through Wed with midday clearing and some nice temps in the low 70s.  Thursday things should clear up nicely with slightly warmer temps in the mid-70s…probably the nicest day all week and then slide back into the early AM/late PM cloud-cover and midday clearing pattern for the weekend.  Light SE winds tonight becoming west for tomorrow afternoon.  Some NW winds for Wed and Thursday as well.  Water temps are still pretty nice with mid to upper 60s all along the coast.  Tides are a bit more extreme this week with the New Moon on Thurs.  The biggest tide swing is happening through the night though so the tide swings midday are decent but with no swell, well, it’s hard to say what would be best.  Just go paddle!

Looking forward to the weekend already!

I’m out!
Mish

Ocean notes:
1)       Surfrider has had some great ads that really make a point.  Check out this one with a cute little panda bear!

2)      Ok, after watching this surfer chick video you’re gonna wish you surfed like a chick…unless you already are one!  SCH-WACK!

3)      “Perfect cold right point break…”  No, I’m not talking about Swamis (insert hysterical laughter) I’m talking about J-Bay.  It’s rocking again and Surfer Mag has some sweet shots of the latest grindage off the point as well as some awesome contest coverage from Surfline. Need you look any further?

4)      WHOA…CONGRATS to Steph Gilmore for Numbah 5!  World titles that is!  She said she had to give it 200 percent in every heat.  Check out these pics...I'll say she did!  And what a place to win…Biarritz…where the champagne really IS champagne!
