Lingering S and for the weekend!

Salutations!  Some fun mixed up surf in the water today with a combo NW and SW swell with some left over hurricane swell in there too!  Waves in the chest/shoulder range out of the SW with some NW waist high waves sneaking in there.  Looks like the better summer spots are picking up more surf…northern end of N. County and the south facing spots in the south end of the county.  Size is starting to taper off a little but we’ll still see plenty of fun ones in the chest/shoulder high range for Friday morning and into midday.  By sundown we’ll see waist/chest waves and occasional shoulder high sets.  That hurricane Cosme didn’t really pan out for us as it took a more westerly direction so the swell is going away from us.  We’re still seeing a little surf from it (every little bit helps!) but the bulk of the energy went westward.  Saturday things taper off a little more with mostly the SW in the waist/chest range.  Sunday we’re looking at a small SW groundswell filling in late morning and through the day.  Size peaks out late Sunday and into Monday morning with waist/chest high surf.  Plenty of S in this swell so the W and S facing beaches should be pretty fun.  Tuesday the swell starts to taper off early with waist high waves to start the day and knee/waist high by sundown with some fun sneaker sets in there.  Wednesday we’ll see the very last of that swell with thigh high waves going to knee high or so by the evening session.  The 4th of July is looking mighty small!    Good news is that there’s some fun looking SW groundswell  that should fill in for the 4th of July holiday weekend.  Stay tuned!

Weather is looking interesting along the coast.  It’s gonna be a scorcher inland but pretty nice along the coast.  We’ll see some dense fog to start and end the days with hot sunshine midday.  That marine layer will probably sit just offshore and might move in and out throughout the day with it being so hot inland.  Fairly mild winds out of the west by midday to cool things off for the next few days.  Air temps in the high 70s/low 80s.  By Sunday we’re looking at the hottest day with mostly clear skies all day and sunshine.  A little more patchy dense fog to start the work week but air temps will remain nice and warm and winds will be light. Water temps are back into the low 70s…YEAH and will feel really nice during the midday scorcher.  Tides are still pretty low first thing in the morning with a medium high in the early afternoon and going to a medium low around sunset.

Looks like some fun surf still with more on the way!

Stay wet San Diego!

Ocean Notes:
1)       Yup, Parko won at Keramas …still the champ!  The man had the ocean tamed…it threw waves his way when he needed it and he pulled some nice ones!

2)      Here’s some entertaining clothing for you…a lionfish patterned rash guard…to keep sharks away.  If you buy this I have a used bridge for sale too!

3)      Houston we’re going electric!  The electric FIAT has SOLD OUT in CA!  If you didn’t get one you’re gonna have to wait for the 2014 model.  With 116mpg and a lease of only $199 a month you can’t go wrong…and it’s a pretty cool car too!

4)      I’ll leave you with some waves to drool over.  They’ll make you want to pack your bags or just leave the office early and go surfing!  Enjoy!

New swells, funky weather then SoCal sunshine!

Hellooooooooooo SoCal!  As small as it was today around town it looks like things will change in the next 24 hours.  Tuesday looks to start with super small surf…ankle high to flat.  Then a new SW will start to fill in through the day.  Of course it’ll be super inconsistent for most of the afternoon with sets starting to come in in the waist high range by the end of the day.  Weather will also be a bit messy with W winds.  See the weather forecast below for details.  Wednesday is when we’ll see a bit more surf from the SW groundswell in the waist/chest high range.  Consistency will still be an issue but will improve throughout the day.  Interestingly we’ll also see the start of a late or early season NW groundswell.  The North Pacific is oddly active (just ask the folks in NorCal who busted out their umbrellas today!) and has thrown some surf our way.  The W and N facing breaks look to pick up some waist to chest high surf.  There’s also a tropical storm Cosme that looks like it will become a hurricane but it looks like the direction will be more westerly than northerly sending energy out to the middle of the Pacific instead of up our way.  We might have some background swell but I think it’ll be too steep and in the wrong direction.   Thursday the SW groundswell peaks early morning with chest/shoulder high sets and some HH+ sets at the better summer spots.  Friday the swell fades a little to start the day with more chest/shoulder high surf but tapers through the day.  Saturday morning looks like waist/chest high surf with perhaps some lingering swell from Cosme.  Then it looks like surf drops off for the weekend.  Surf drops to waist high with some more localized WNW wind swell.  That sticks around for the start of the next work week before the next SW swell shows up.  Looks like some activity brewing in the Southern Hemi so hopefully it’ll throw some action our way.

The weather is pretty funky for the next few days.  The low pressure system that’s sending rain to NorCal is sending possible drizzles our way for Tuesday morning.  Light winds give away to some gusty west winds by midday and carry on through the night.  Air temps in the high 60s.   Things calm down for Thursday with a bit more sunshine by late morning, lighter winds, and air temps in the low/mid 70s along the coast.  The weekend looks pretty nice with some early AM clouds but clearing to sunshine and warm air temps in the high 70s.  That pattern holds through the first part of next week.   We’re coming off the Super Duper Full Moon and seeing a negative low for the dawn patrol but moving up to just a medium high midday/early afternoon then back down to a medium low in the early evening.  Water temps are holding in the mid/high 60s.

Looks like Thursday might be the day that conditions and swell line up for fun cleaner conditions.

Stay wet SoCal!

Medium/small S for the weekend then new SW midweek!

Happy Friday and Happy Summer Solstice!  It’s now officially SUMMERTIME!  So, kick off those sneakers and stick your toes in the sand cause it’s time for warm water and south swells!  We’re seeing some crossed up swell as the tail end of the last S swell mixes with W wind swell.  That made for some bumpy waist/chest high surf today with the summer spots seeing the bigger chest high sets.  Surf will be smaller Saturday as the W wind swell holds.  Sunday looks about the same on into MondayTuesday looks like a turn around day with a new SW inconsistent groundswell arriving midday with a little extra push from a tropical cyclone that’s formed down off Mainland Mex.  That groundswell will bump things into the inconsistent chest/shoulder high range by late Tues afternoon, fill in through the day Wednesday with chest to shoulder/HH surf and peaking Thursday morning with some fun chest/shoulder high surf and HH at the standout south summer breaks.   Friday the swell will hold for the morning session and fade gradually through the day.  By Sat we’re looking at waist/chest high surf…still plenty fun but smaller and more consistent.  Some activity down in the Southern Hemi…Indo is a good place to be right now too if you happen to have the time!

The weather pattern seems to be holding for the next few days.  That means early morning clouds, clearing mid-morning to sunshine midday and then that marine layer moving back in for the sunset.  That also means we’re looking at overnight light SE breezes picking up and changing to SW winds by the time at sunshine hits late morning.  Air temps only in the low 70s along the coast with a little cooling trend and some moisture in the air for Monday and Tues before warming up a tad midweek.  BIIIIIIIIIG huge tide swings going on right now with the upcoming SUPER MOON Full Moon on Sunday night.  Pre-dawn negative lows will actually give the morning sesh a little boost and then the medium low mid-afternoon with really race up to a big high tide a bit after sunset.  Water temps are hovering in the mid to high 60s. This S wind isn’t helping things warm up but it still feels pretty nice!

A little S and wind swell to tide us over through the first weekend of Summer before we get another fun SW/hurricane swell combo.

SPF it folks!
Stay wet San Diego!

Ocean Notes:
1)       In case you hadn’t heard…Trestles has been saved …again!

2)      Interesting news…if the water’s clean people will come to the beach more often.  Who knew?  A recent study  proves it!  Keep on keeping those beaches clean…pick up a piece of trash on your way in and set a good example.

3)      Way to go PULU!!!!  Who?  He’s the first Indonesian surfer to win an ASP heat.  Check out the footage from today’s Oakley Pro.  Watch videos from the day’s heats and updates on results here.

New S on the way!

(For some unknown reason the email list function on my blog has started working again!!! I’ve been posting all this time…hope you still enjoy my blog! – Mish)

Aloha summer surfers and surfistas!  Been down with a little bug so sorry for the delay in the forecast.  We’ve got some building swell on the buoys right now. We’re looking at some new SW groundswell.  It’s nothing Earth-shattering but we’ll have some fun waves for at least a few days out of the S.  Looks like waves should start out in the waist/chest range for Wednesday morning…inconsistent of course as all good south groundswells are.  Swell hits about chest/shoulder high with some fun HH sets at the better south summer spots.  Surf holds Thursday and just starts to taper off Friday with slightly less surf but still fun.  There looks to be a bit of wind swell on top of that so all of the SD beaches will be seeing something to ride. Saturday the surf really drops off with thigh high peelers but all is not lost!  There’s a steep new S swell that will bump things back up into the waist/chest range.  The south facing spots will definitely see more swell on this one.  Other west and north facing beaches should see some fairly wimpy W wind swell.  Sunday starts off small but a new long period SW groundswell will fill in during the second half of the day.  Looks like some fun ones.  I’ll see how that swell pans out and let you know!

Looks like we’re going to have a similar weather patter as today…morning patchy fog along the coast clearing midday to give us a little sunshine and then filling in again for the late afternoon evening.  Daytime highs are looking to be in the high 60s/low 70s.  Water temps are NICE…might 60s around most of the mid and north county. Looks like Pt. Loma might still be a little cooler in the mid 60s.   We’re approaching the Full Moon this Sunday which means some more extreme tides.  The most extreme stuff is overnight but we’ll see some movement over the weekend in the morning from the negative low in the wee hours of the morning and then big movement in the second half of the day with a mid/early afternoon medium low going to a pretty high tide at sunset.

A nice fun south on the way with smaller weekend surf but ending with some fun surf on Sunday.

Stay wet San Diego!

Ocean Notes:

1)       Kick off the weekend with a good surf flick on Friday night at La Paloma!  Watch “Uncharted Waters – The Personal History of Wayne Lynch” at 7:30pm.  For ticket click here.

2) I’ve lagged on my ocean notes but in case you missed it catch the highlights of the Fiji Pro here …I mean really, are these guys human?

3)     As we dive into summer with our kids and take off on adventures outdoors it might be a good idea to check out this website… http://www.theoutdooradventure.net/ before going anywhere. There are great videos, gear reviews and suggestions for all things camping and hiking.  And maybe buy some green products to take with you from here… http://www.buygreen.com/

4)      And I’ll leave you with this…highlights from Day One at the Oakley Pro Bali where John John pulls the sickest air and lands it and Slater gets bumped early.  Just watch it and see…

Weekend of sun surf and sunshine!

Ahhhhhh, such sweet swell we had. Waves are still pretty fun and clean with the last of the swell tapering off.  We’ll see some thigh/waist high surf for Friday morning.  A little WNW windswell will keep the bump going all day.  Saturday will start with more windswell in the knee/thigh high range as a new SW starts to fill in around midday.  We’re looking at thigh/waist high surf with some bigger sets at the better summer spots.  Swell fills in further Sunday with waist /chest high surf around town. Swell peaks late Sunday but size looks to hold on for Monday with a bit less energy.  Swell tapers off through the day Monday as a new NW wind swell fills in.  A little bumpy surf waist high surf for Tuesday…probably some chest high sets.  Towards the end of the day we’ll see some early long period sets out of the south. This swell isn’t really aimed at SD County but we should still see some waist/chest high surf with that WNW wind swell.  Surf picks up Wed as both swells peak…surf in the chest/shoulder high range through the day.  Size holds into Thursday with mostly wind swell in the chest/shoulder high range and begins to taper off later in the evening.  Looks like a medium size storm should send us our next batch of southern hemi swell next weekend.

Patchy fog will start our days for the next couple of days.  Luckily it looks like things will clear by late morning and we’ll see sunshine by midday.  Calm winds in the morning becoming light/moderate out of the SW.    Looks like that pattern should follow us through the weekend with decreasing clouds and more sunshine Sunday and Monday.  Air temps in the high 60s and low 70s for the weekend and a tad warmer to kick off the week holding through the week.  Water is hanging in the mid/high 60s.  As we’re coming off the New Moon we’re still seeing some pretty low morning tide with a medium high in the early afternoon and going back out with a medium low tide for the evening session.  Mid-morning and evening tides look pretty good for some fun waves!
Some consistent and fun medium size waves for the weekend and into the week!

Stay wet San Diego!
