NW AND more SW on it's way!

End of the weekend already?  Geez!  We didn’t have much surf but that’s all about to change!  We’ve got some SE swell passing us by with some weak NW in there as well.  Waves take a little turn on Monday as the storm that’s pounding Washington (rain this weekend, 55 mph winds and flash floods!) sends us some much needed swell!  Surf bumps up late in the day with some waist/chest high waves as it starts to fill in. South winds might be an issue!  The steep northerly angle might hinder some spots so the winter spots will probably see a bit more surf.  Tuesday we’ll see more NW swell with chest/shoulder high waves and the occasional HH set getting thrown in there to kick things up a notch!  A weather system is also set to move in and bring some light to moderate S and SE winds mixed with N/NEW winds.  Wed and Thursday will see the back end of the NW but still some fun waves in the chest high range for Wed and waist/chest for Thurs.  See below for wind forecast.  Friday we’ll see things start to pick up as a late season SW swell fills in.  That NW will give us waist high waves to start the day with very inconsistent SW sets filling in through the day in the waist/chest high range.  Saturday we’ll see the swell peak with some chest/shoulder high waves at the better south facing beaches.  Sunday we’ll still see some waist/chest high surf with the better sets still around town.  Monday tapers off a little with waist and some chest high sets and more consistency.  It looks like the southern hemisphere is still alive and kicking so we might see more late South swells.  The NW is waking up…just ask the folks in Washington!

Ah, Fall weather…so we’re looking at a system heading at us but hitting the NW instead of So Cal. We’ll be the lucky recipients of a combo of S/SE and N/NE winds.  Monday will be mostly light to moderate S winds with more SE winds for late morning Tues and NE into Wed buuuuuuuut turning SE again by late morning.  Similar for Thurs too! Friday we’ll see the more normal onshore wind which unfortunately will make for slightly messier conditions for that swell.  Air temps will be all over the place as well.  Monday will be hot and sunny and in the high 70s again with cool air temps overnight.  Tuesday thru Thursday will drop into the low 70s and high 60s midday with nighttime temps in the high 50s.  Expect a bit more clouds Wed and Thurs and a chance of drizzle for Wed night too! Then we’re back up into the high 70s and low 80s with plenty of sunshine for the weekend.  Water temps are still in the high 60s except for areas south of Pt. Loma (the Coronado area) which is in the mid to even low 60s in spots.  High morning tides are lending a nice tide push for the dawn patrol session and heading out to a low in the early afternoon before heading up high again for a while after sunset.

Looks like we could have some really fun surf coming up this week!  Let’s hope the winds cooperate!

Stay wet San Diego!

Surf early

Quick update on weather conditions…looks like it’s a good idea to catch the front side of this upcoming NW swell as winds will make a mess of things by the second half of the day.  Winds won’t be as bad at the coast as they will be in the mountains but better offshore conditions first thing in the AM.  Much cooler air temps and gusty winds through Thursday.  Tides will also be turning around and pushing high all morning.

Have a great surf session!  Stay wet San Diego!

Here it comes...NW swell on the way!

Fall is such an interesting time for surf and weather!  We’re looking at some NW wind and a hint of SW groundswell running along the coastline right now.  Waist/chest high surf kick off Tuesday morning but things slide down from there.  Look for knee/waist high surf for the second half of the day and into Wed.  The good news is that there’s more swell out of the NW that will fill in midday Wed.  Surf bumps up into the waist/chest range by nightfall and by Thursday morning we should see some waist/chest high surf with shoulder high sets.  This is a quickie fast and furious swell so size jumps up into the shoulder/HH range by midday, peaks and leaves as quickly as it came. By evening we’re back to waist/chest and waist by Friday morning and fading fast.  By Saturday morning we’re looking at thigh/waist high waves.  Technically a new SW groundswell should hit the buoys BUT the direction is too steep for most of SD to see any action.  Sat and Sunday we’re looking at thigh/waist high waves from NW wind swell and in the better summer breaks we might see the occasional waist high set.  Now, Monday it looks like there’s a chance of more SW groundswell.  Both hemispheres are still kicking...

Here’s the other half of our interesting fall…the weather.  A funky little weather system is going to swoop into town on Tuesday night after a beautiful mid-70 degree day.  Patchy fog on Wed morning gives way to light easterly winds and low 70s.  A chance of drizzle for Wed night, cool air temps (high 50s) and winds turn out of the south east and blow all night.  Friday the winds will turn and we’ll see light onshore winds but clear sunny skies.  It’s definitely more Fall type weather.  The weekend holds sunnier skies, warmer daytime air temps in the high 70s/low 80s and nighttime temps in the high 50s/low 60s.  Water temps are hovering in the mid/high 60s with a few nice 70s here and there.  Tides are somewhat mild this week as we’re post full moon.

Smaller NW swells on the way

Ho hum…did I miss Tuesday?  Sorry, Mommy duties overwhelmed me (as did our first preschool cold) so here goes…

Fading SW will be mostly gone for Friday with the left over WNW windswell giving us some pretty tiny surf.  Expect some knee high surf with waist high sets at best throughout the day.  Saturday starts out about the same but a small NW windswell fills in midday to deliver some thigh high waves.  A hint of background SW swell will give the summer beaches a little life but the windswell will dominate.  More NW wind swell for Sunday with waist high waves and a bit more on Monday with a new NW wind swell in the waist/chest range.  As all wind swells are we’re looking at low energy short period waves even as the swell peaks Monday afternoon.  Swell backs off a little Tuesday and early Wed with knee/waist high waves out of the NW.  Then we’ll actually see a slightly better WNW swell fill in late Wed with surf bumping up into the waist/chest high range for the evening sessions but looking better in size throughout the day Thursday.  This short-lived swell backs off quickly on Friday so best hit it Thursday or late Wed.  The Southern Hemi is still sending us a little love and the North Pacific is starting to wake up too so it looks like we’ll be getting more swell, nothing huge but some sporadic combos of NW wind swell mixed with SW groundswell for the following weekend and into the following week if the models pan out as expected.

And for all of you who were wishing for the heat to break…it’s going to break…or has broken.  We’re seeing air temps in the low 70s/high 60s for the end of the week and into the weekend as a little low pressure system sweeps down from the north.  There’s even a chance of drizzle Sat night and through Sunday with increasing clouds for the weekend.  We’ll still see the sunshine midday but just not as much as the past month.  Also expect a bit more onshore and NW winds by midday.  Look for a quick warm up Monday and Tues but then cooling down again.  Water temps are really nice right now…low 70s/high 60s with some mid60s in the La Jolla area and south of Pt. Loma where they see more upwelling.  Big huge tide swings as we had the Harvest (full) moon last night.  Just gorgeous!  Coming off the super low overnight tide we’ll see a big high tide mid-morning then it’ll drain out to the super low tide again in the late afternoon.  Lots of water movement…good for that afternoon beach bike ride down the coast or some tidepooling before dinner.  It’ll definitely slow things down for the mid-morning session though.

So, pick your sessions wisely as the tides will dictate how good they’ll be…and as always, stay wet San Diego!

Later!

More NW but wind swell...

Super quickie report/forecast…more tomorrow…

We’re looking at more smaller NW wind swell making its way down our coastline with just the last dregs of the SW groundswell. Surf looks to pick back up over the next few days from the waist high we had today to waist with occasional chest for Tues and more chest high for Wed as the swell peaks.  It’s all very shorter period stuff so not the juicy clean stuff we had over the weekend.  How nice was THAT?  Plenty of wind swell waves thru Thurs morning and then it starts to back off midday.  More SW and NW wind swell on the way…more manana!

Lots of thick marine layer/dense fog for the next couple of days.  The good news is that it keeps the winds down and things cool at the coast for a while before the clouds burn off and the sunshine shows up.  Things cool down significantly with mid to low 70s along the coast through the weekend.  Humidity drops a little too!  YAY!  Water temps in the mid/high 60s in N. County and mid/lower 60s south of La Jolla.

Gotta run but will update Tuesday night!
Stay wet San Diego!
