Smaller NW swells on the way

Ho hum…did I miss Tuesday?  Sorry, Mommy duties overwhelmed me (as did our first preschool cold) so here goes…

Fading SW will be mostly gone for Friday with the left over WNW windswell giving us some pretty tiny surf.  Expect some knee high surf with waist high sets at best throughout the day.  Saturday starts out about the same but a small NW windswell fills in midday to deliver some thigh high waves.  A hint of background SW swell will give the summer beaches a little life but the windswell will dominate.  More NW wind swell for Sunday with waist high waves and a bit more on Monday with a new NW wind swell in the waist/chest range.  As all wind swells are we’re looking at low energy short period waves even as the swell peaks Monday afternoon.  Swell backs off a little Tuesday and early Wed with knee/waist high waves out of the NW.  Then we’ll actually see a slightly better WNW swell fill in late Wed with surf bumping up into the waist/chest high range for the evening sessions but looking better in size throughout the day Thursday.  This short-lived swell backs off quickly on Friday so best hit it Thursday or late Wed.  The Southern Hemi is still sending us a little love and the North Pacific is starting to wake up too so it looks like we’ll be getting more swell, nothing huge but some sporadic combos of NW wind swell mixed with SW groundswell for the following weekend and into the following week if the models pan out as expected.

And for all of you who were wishing for the heat to break…it’s going to break…or has broken.  We’re seeing air temps in the low 70s/high 60s for the end of the week and into the weekend as a little low pressure system sweeps down from the north.  There’s even a chance of drizzle Sat night and through Sunday with increasing clouds for the weekend.  We’ll still see the sunshine midday but just not as much as the past month.  Also expect a bit more onshore and NW winds by midday.  Look for a quick warm up Monday and Tues but then cooling down again.  Water temps are really nice right now…low 70s/high 60s with some mid60s in the La Jolla area and south of Pt. Loma where they see more upwelling.  Big huge tide swings as we had the Harvest (full) moon last night.  Just gorgeous!  Coming off the super low overnight tide we’ll see a big high tide mid-morning then it’ll drain out to the super low tide again in the late afternoon.  Lots of water movement…good for that afternoon beach bike ride down the coast or some tidepooling before dinner.  It’ll definitely slow things down for the mid-morning session though.

So, pick your sessions wisely as the tides will dictate how good they’ll be…and as always, stay wet San Diego!

Later!
