Last of the SW before FLAT then windswell...

We’ve got some fading SW swell and a little NW windswell dribbling in for Friday in the knee high range.  The weekend is looking pretty tiny for surf…a good time to get some snorkeling in as the water clarity is pretty amazing right now. Fishing is pretty good too for that matter.  Anyway, Saturday we’re looking at ankle slappers out of the south. Sunday starts off pretty small with building WNW windswell as a low pressure system moves in.  Surf will pick up in the second half of the day so by sunset we might see some waist/chest high waves.  Definitely WNW windswell for Monday starting off in the chest high range but probably a little lumpy with some moderate west winds on it overnight.  Thing back down over the course of the day but still waist/chest by sunset and into Tuesday.  A little background SW swell should throw some small waves our way but the windswell will dominate.  Wednesday looks like some combo swell with that background SW and windswell both in the waist high range. Thursday looks pretty small with a new SW that might just start showing up later in the day.  Definitely more activity down south than up north these days.

Same story for the next couple of days with patchy fog clearing by late morning and then moving in again overnight.  Air temps in the mid 60s through Sat and then a little cooling and few more daytime clouds for Sun as that system moves in.  It’s really a crap shoot though because it doesn’t really look like that low pressure will make it this far south.   I think it will be mostly sunny Sunday and then cloud up Sunday night.  There are chances of showers Sunday night and into Monday with more sunshine returning Tuesday and a warm up for the end of the week.  Tides are coming off the full moon so we’re seeing some negative dawn patrol lows moving up to a medium midday high and then a medium low in the late afternoon.  Water temps ARE warming up with these south swells.  We’re seeing low 50s up and down the coast with 60-61 degree readings at the offshore buoys.  COME ON SOUTH SWELLS!

Enjoy the long holiday weekend with some fun at the beach…paddle, snorkel or just have a BBQ and enjoy the sunshine midday!

Hopping on outta here!

Fun SW to kick off the week!

Cheers!  Some fun crossed up swell this weekend with some local NW wind swell mixed in with some new SW groundswell.  Lots of energy in the water (and people!) and some good sets if you hit the summer spots and were patient.  A continuation of the SW with a little background NW for Monday.  That SW groundswell will become a little more consistent as swell period decreases.  Surf in the chest/shoulder range with some standout sets first thing in the morning.  Swell tapers off through the day but leaves plenty of surf.  Tuesday we’ll still see waist/chest with occasional shoulder high sets at the better south facing spots. Wed and Thursday the swell dissipates even more with waist/chest and then waist high.  Friday looks like some small NW windswell as we roll into the weekend with knee/waist high for Sat.  A fresh SW looks like it should hop into town on Easter Sunday…size should bump up but I’ll have to watch this system to see what it does over the next few days.  Much more activity in the Southern Hemi lately…an early summer perhaps?

Unfortunately we won’t be seeing summer heat with those south swells.  Spring conditions take over with patchy marine later in the early AM and evening.  We’re looking at air temps hitting the mid60s with Monday and Friday being the warmest days of the week.  Monday looks mostly sunny with some sunshine the rest of the week but a 50/50 split on clouds to sunshine.  The big “S” us upon us too…south winds will show up every day after morning calm conditions.  Nothing crazy but the breaks will definitely vary with the winds…a little kelp action might not be a bad idea either!  Water temps are gradually heating up with these south swells. Offshore buoys are hitting 59/60 while the beach temps are reading 57/58.  A few more swells and we can ditch those 3/2mms (until we get a significant wind event!).  Full moon Wed is bringing some slightly more extreme tides.  We’re looking at a mid-morning high tide draining out to a negative low midafternoon and then back up again for a little sunset tide push.

Looks like the week will kick off with some fun surf before things quiet down for the Easter weekend.

Daz it!

Sizable wind swell then SW groundswell

Hey there!  Hi there!  Looks like we’ve got some jump in surf height today and Friday as a significant WNW wind swell moves on in.  Surf will be fairly consistent and in the chest/shoulder high range for north facing winter beaches with some inconsistent background SW groundswell in the waist/chest range for the more south facing summer beaches.  Wind swell will peak Friday afternoon and fade pretty quickly overnight with wind swell surf in the waist/chest high range for Sat morning.  Saturday afternoon will see some new SW groundswell start to fill in. Again, super inconsistent at first with the swell becoming more apparent by Sunday morning.  Decent energy and surf for summer spots in the chest/shoulder high range with the occasional slightly bigger set at the better summer breaks.

That swell sticks around Monday with similar sized surf, Tuesday with slightly smaller chest high surf, tapering off more Wed with waist/chest high surf and Thursday the dregs of the swell will hit the waist high range with very little energy.  There’s not much activity in either hemisphere as far as surf generating storms.  We’re looking at a little wind swell for Friday with a little weather throwing something at us but it’s kind of quiet otherwise.

As far as the weather goes it looks like we’re going to see more of that patchy fog in the early mornings and evenings again but clearing to sunshine for most of the days.  Not particularly warm as Spring conditions keep us in the mid60s all weekend.  A little warm up on Monday and Tues before cooling down a few degrees.  Wind patterns look fairly common for Spring time too…calm mornings and mild to moderate SW winds by the afternoon.  That means the morning sessions look to be pretty clean and the afternoon sessions will have some bump on them.

Tides are starting to get moving as we see a not-too-crazy high tide in the morning and a pretty drained out tide for the early afternoon sessions while the medium high tide fills in for the sunset sessions.  Full moon isn’t until next Tuesday.  Water temps are trying to creep up with these last few S swells. We’re seeing temps in the high 50s.  You could probably get away with a 3/2 if you’re not already in it…ditch the booties unless you’re doing the super dawn patrol or moonlight session.

Looks like some combo before a nice SW groundswell moves into town to kick off next week.

Stay wet San Diego!

Ocean Notes:
1)      Lots going on in the surfing world…but we’ll get to that later.  So, check this cool link out…glow in the dark millipedes  have been found on Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay.  Talk about a sci-fi adventure!  Wild!

2)    And seeing as it’s Spring time and all I thought it would be good to pass along the website for the California Native Plant Society .  If you’re doing some landscaping and would like to be more Planet-friendly how about planting what is supposed to be here in the first place!  Sorry, tropical plants and lush lawns aren’t natural habitat in arid ol’ San Diego!

3)    And now…back to surfing…I wish my days in wobbly wind chucky surf looked half this good…John John…North Shore…watch it.

4)    Ok, are you ready for a surf trip of a lifetime?  We’ll Google and Surfing Mag brought back the “Google Earth Challenge ”…find a place on the planet that no one has surfed before, submit the location and Surfing Mag will send you and  a friend (remember who told you about the contest…your friend Mish!) there if you win. It’s just that easy!  You have until next Sunday to enter.  Just email me at least a week before we're supposed to leave and tell me what I need to pack.

5)    And last but not least…the most surfy surfy drooling link of all…a peek at Surfer Mag’s Photo Issue .  Do not click on this link if you do not want to dream about surfing all day!

More south then a chance of showers midweek

We’re looking at some shorter period SW swell to fill in for Sunday.  Size should pick up throughout the day with some fun waist/chest high surf at the south facing summer spots.  Monday will see a bit more swell so slightly more of the chest high stuff which will continue on into Tuesday.  Wednesday looks like a combo of that south along with some local NW wind swell.  Looks like the first day of spring is going to see some inclement weather.  Winds will mix with swell but surf looks to be in the waist/chest high range out of the south with some waist wind swell for the west and north facing beaches.  Thursday thing will clean up with some new SW groundswell entering the picture.  Looking like surf will pick up into the waist/chest range and increasing Friday to some fun chest/shoulder high surf at the better south facing breaks.  Swell peaks late Fri but we’ll still see some fun surf for Saturday in the waist/chest range as the swell tapers off.  Looks like we’ll start to see the beginnings of a new SW groundswell on Sunday as a storm’s brewing down in the Southern Hemi.  We’ll see how that pans out but it looks pretty favorable for some fun surf.

Weather is interesting.  We’re seeing a lot of marine layer (aka fog) along the coast lately and that will continue through the middle of the week.  Look for coastal dense cloudiness with some afternoon partial sunshine in areas but not widespread.  Then dense fog filling in again overnight.   Winds will be fairly light but out of the south for the next few days.  Wednesday a low pressure system swings into town and we’ll see more SW winds picking up and a chance of showers.  Air temps will be in the low to mid60s for the remainder of the weekend and into the week.  Showers Wed night and the storm moves out Thursday as we start to see more sunshine and warming air temps for the end of the week and into the weekend…low 70s.  Water temps are still a little chilly in the mid50s but I’m thinking they should warm up as we keep seeing these southern hemi swells pushing warm water our way.  We’re between the new and full moon so tides aren’t moving much for the first half of the week.  We’re seeing a medium low for the morning sessions going up to a low high tide in the early afternoon before going out a very little to the evening sunset sessions.   The end of the week will see more extreme tidal movement which will help those fun souths that will be showing up.

The next few days should hold some fun south swell.  The next south in a week or so should be fun with the benefit of some sunshine.

Stay wet San Diego!

In for a week of small surf...really small.

Aloha fellow surfers!  I hope you’ve enjoyed the past few days of surf because things are going to be kind of small for a while.  We’re looking at knee to waist high waves out of the NW and a little out of the SW next week.  It’ll be a week of small or smaller?  How big a board to you have?  The northern hemisphere is quieting down as we find the southern hemi waking up a bit.  Wednesday through the weekend we’re looking at knee/waist high waves.  Next Tuesday it looks like a small SW swell will show up to give us a little reprieve with some waist high waves at the better summer beaches.  The southern hemi looks like it’s going to throw us a few more bones and hopefully the northern hemi will spit out a few more juicy swells before it’s done for the Winter.  Sorry not much to report…

The good news is that the weather looks like it’s going to be rain-free for at least the next week.  With the cool water and high pressure system keeping the inland air temps warm we’re due for some fairly consistent marine layer this week.  That means fog in the morning and evenings and scattered sunshine midday and into the afternoon.  Morning winds will be out of the NE through the end of the week with afternoon winds turning out of the W.  Weekend looks like we might see a bit more onshore wind earlier in the day.  Tides are coming off the new moon Monday so we’re coming off a negative high tide for the dawn patrol and have a medium high tide in the late morning before going out to a medium low tide in the late afternoon. Luckily with the time change we now have time to surf before the sun sets after work.  Water temps are trying to warm up ever so slightly with the small south swells rolling in.  The last bit of wind cooled them down but with the next set of souths we should see an increase of a few degrees.

Looks like some good clean conditions for logging or SUPping.  Watch out for that fog and don’t get lost!
I’m outta here!
Mish

Ocean Notes:
1)     Kirra =  Kelly and his 52nd career win!  The mags are making us wait for photos and video on this one but the story is here.

2)   We can, however, watch the quarter finals and some pretty darn good surfing at Snapper Rock.

3)   Puerto Rico…it’s not just for rum anymore!
