Lingering S and for the weekend!

Salutations!  Some fun mixed up surf in the water today with a combo NW and SW swell with some left over hurricane swell in there too!  Waves in the chest/shoulder range out of the SW with some NW waist high waves sneaking in there.  Looks like the better summer spots are picking up more surf…northern end of N. County and the south facing spots in the south end of the county.  Size is starting to taper off a little but we’ll still see plenty of fun ones in the chest/shoulder high range for Friday morning and into midday.  By sundown we’ll see waist/chest waves and occasional shoulder high sets.  That hurricane Cosme didn’t really pan out for us as it took a more westerly direction so the swell is going away from us.  We’re still seeing a little surf from it (every little bit helps!) but the bulk of the energy went westward.  Saturday things taper off a little more with mostly the SW in the waist/chest range.  Sunday we’re looking at a small SW groundswell filling in late morning and through the day.  Size peaks out late Sunday and into Monday morning with waist/chest high surf.  Plenty of S in this swell so the W and S facing beaches should be pretty fun.  Tuesday the swell starts to taper off early with waist high waves to start the day and knee/waist high by sundown with some fun sneaker sets in there.  Wednesday we’ll see the very last of that swell with thigh high waves going to knee high or so by the evening session.  The 4^th of July is looking mighty small!    Good news is that there’s some fun looking SW groundswell  that should fill in for the 4^th of July holiday weekend.  Stay tuned!

Weather is looking interesting along the coast.  It’s gonna be a scorcher inland but pretty nice along the coast.  We’ll see some dense fog to start and end the days with hot sunshine midday.  That marine layer will probably sit just offshore and might move in and out throughout the day with it being so hot inland.  Fairly mild winds out of the west by midday to cool things off for the next few days.  Air temps in the high 70s/low 80s.  By Sunday we’re looking at the hottest day with mostly clear skies all day and sunshine.  A little more patchy dense fog to start the work week but air temps will remain nice and warm and winds will be light. Water temps are back into the low 70s…YEAH and will feel really nice during the midday scorcher.  Tides are still pretty low first thing in the morning with a medium high in the early afternoon and going to a medium low around sunset.

Looks like some fun surf still with more on the way!

Ocean Notes:

1)       Yup, Parko won at Keramas …still the champ!  The man had the ocean tamed…it threw waves his way when he needed it and he pulled some nice ones!

2)      Here’s some entertaining clothing for you…a lionfish patterned rash guard…to keep sharks away.  If you buy this I have a used bridge for sale too!

3)      Houston we’re going electric!  The electric FIAT has SOLD OUT in CA!  If you didn’t get one you’re gonna have to wait for the 2014 model.  With 116mpg and a lease of only $199 a month you can’t go wrong…and it’s a pretty cool car too!

More rain then more swell!

Surf picking up a tad Tuesday with some new NW shorter period groundswell and some left over W swell.  Surf in the waist high range around most of town with a few standouts at the better winter spots.  Weather is gonna be a damper though as howling winds and more rain blanket the coast.  Wednesday looks like a significant bump up in size with new NW wind swell and slightly cleaner conditions most likely later in the day.  Size jumps into the shoulder/HH range, short period and peaking midday but holding some decent size for early Thursday in the chest/shoulder range.  Friday starts off in the smaller waist high range but some longer period NW groundswell will start to fill in midday. We won’t really see size pickup until Saturday morning though with some decent energy coming our way and waves in the chest/shoulder range.  The bulk of this swell is actually aimed more at the NE side if Hawaii.  They should get hit dead on by that one!  We’ll see plenty of surf through the holiday weekend in the shoulder/HH range, peaking on Monday morning.  It even looks like Santa might deliver more NW for Christmas Day…but that’s still a ways off.  For now we’ll just stick with the nice NW groundswell for the weekend and into the first part of the week.

Weather will be a big factor with showers late tonight and all day Wed.  We’ll also see some significant winds blowing all day Tues…starting out of the SW and then out of the W for the rest of the afternoon. Wed things calm down with mild to moderate winds out of the N and then E through the night as we see a little Santa Ana type weather (minus the heat).  Mostly sunny Thurs and Fri but nighttime air temps are the big news…COLD.  Low 60s by day but low 40s and high 30s for Tues and Wed night…then back into the mid40s for the rest of the week.  Those dawn patrols are gonna be downright chilly!  Bust out the booties!  Clouds are back Sat and showers are back for Sunday along with some S and W wings.  Tides are fairly moderate through the daylight hours this week with medium lows mid-morning and medium highs in the mid-afternoon.  We start to see more extremes for the weekend though.  Water quality is always a concern this time of year and we’ve had some really significant rain.  Be smart about where you surf and where the lagoon/river mouths and stormdrains are. 

My calls for surf are Thurs AM and Saturday.  Git it!

Kinda small for a few days...then rain.

Salutations!  Small surf for a few days and then Mother Nature sends us a late winter storm midweek.  We’re looking at knee to thigh high for Tuesday and a small hiccup of surf out of the NW in the thigh high range for Wednesday.  Then we’ll see some small NW wind swell for Thursday as that storm moves in.  At the tail end of the storm is a small SW groundswell late Thursday and into Friday. We’re not going to see a lot of action from that swell…knee to waist at best.  Late Friday we’ll see some WNW bump surf in the to waist high zone with cleaner conditions and some SOLID waist high waves by Saturday (yes, that’s sarcasm).  Luckily some background SW groundswell will give the better summer spots a little boost for the weekend with some waist/chest high surf for late Sat and into Sunday.  The south swells are showing up but don’t quite have the “UMPH” that we’d like to see. It’s early…hopefully we’ll be seeing more energetic swells sooner than later.

The clouds are sticking around the coast with clouds and mild west winds for Tuesday and that late storm making it’s way into town midday Wed with chances of showers after 11am and light S winds.  Gusty west winds and rain for Wed night and into Thursday morning.  The bulk of the rain looks like it’ll show up around commute time Wed until pre-dawn hours Thursday. Things will probably be a little lumpy Thursday morning with S/SE winds most of the night and into the day.  Conditions clean up for Friday morning but air temps will be in the low 60s for most of the week until then.  The good news is that it look like we’ll have sunshine and 70 degree temps for the weekend (YEAH!).  More good news…water temps are picking up ever so slightly…high 50s and low 60s around town.  We’ve got some pretty low pre-dawn hours moving into a medium high tide midday and then a medium low late afternoon.  Probably a little push on that midday high but not much swell to push. 

Looks like a small few days before this storm rolls in Wednesday afternoon.  SUP it, log it, or fish it!
