Steep S and NW windswell then a SW

Fly-by South…that’s what I call it.  I’m referring to the SE groundswell that’s passing us by right now.  Most spots in SD County are seeing some small NW windswell with a little S if you’re at a good south facing spot, not a lot of energy and a bit less on tap for the start of the week on Monday.  Look for waist high from the wind swell around most of the county and waist with occasional chest for the S at the top summer sports.  The good news is that a new swell is on tap to fill in late Monday. This is still a pretty steep swell but it has a slightly better angle on it and a bit more energy. That means the better summer spots should see a bit of new S on Tuesday, waist high with building waist/chest high sets.  Of course, it will be a typical inconsistent south and again, steep so missing a lot of SD.  Swell fills in all day and peaks early early Wed.  Look for some more consistent shoulder/HH surf in north N. County at a few select juicy summer breaks along the coast.  Things taper off for Thurs with chest/shoulder high surf and then more so again on Friday with surf in the waist high range.  By the weekend we’re looking at some pretty small knee/waist high surf at best from a new S and a little NW wind swell as a late season system moves down from the north and stirs things up a bit.

Weather sure was nice this weekend!  Unfortunately that’s all about to change.  More sunshine and air temps in the mid-60s for Monday and then a few more clouds and slightly cooler air temps for the middle part of the week as that weather system passes though.  Believe it or not we even have a chance of showers for Wed night and into Thurs.  Look for things to clear up a little for the weekend though.  As is par for the course for the Spring doldrums we’re looking at SW winds for a good part of the week.  Your best bet will be the earlier session before the winds put some bump on the water.  Winds don’t get too out of hand for the first half of the week.  I expect them to pick up a bit as that weather front moves through on Wed night so Thursday might not be an optimal day.  Will update the weather forecast Wed.

Water temps are still a little brisk with the last bit of wind stirring up the cooler water.  We’re still seeing some mid to high 50s along the coast.  The lower afternoon tides will definitely bring some of that cold stuff up with the higher tide feeling a few degrees warmer.  Interestingly, the buoys offshore are reading in the low 60s.  As we head towards the Full Moon this weekend we’re starting to see a bit more tidal movement but nothing horribly extreme.  Look for a medium high tide in the early morning dropping out to a near-zero low tide in the early afternoon and rolling back up to a fairly high tide for the evening sessions.

Looks like Tues/Wed are the best days this week for some fun surf!  Hit a summer spot for ideal swell direction in SD or head up the 5 to OC/LA!

Short on time tonight…sorry, no Ocean Notes!

Stay wet San Diego!
