A lot of swell and a lot of wind!

Boogaloo everyone!  Hope you’re all warm and dry while reading this.  We’ve got a nice late Winter storm going on right now throughout California with SoCal taking on some ugly messy high surf out of the W and more gusty winds on the way for a few days.  If the wind wasn’t making a mess of everything we’d see some well OH surf in the southern half of the county and some HH surf up north.  Looks like some fresh NW and BIG (read: OH++/DOH) windswell mixed with new SW groundswell for Sun and into Monday.  That NW will dominate the beaches with the inconsistent SW making an appearance for those at the south facing beaches.  Look for HH+ surf Monday and tapering off a lot but cleaning up a little Tuesday…chest/shoulder high.   Look for a small NW to fill in Wed.  Another SW groundswell looks to show for late Wed and into Thurs so the better summer spots should have some fun surf in the waist/chest range for Thurs.  Slightly smaller for Fri and then look for more NW wind swell to show up with potentially some more weather but nothing close to this weekend’s storm…mostly clouds and S winds.  Lots happening down south so we should get more Southern Hemi groundswell (and hopefully warmer water!).

Of course if you’ve stuck your head outside in the last 24 hours you’ve probably figured out that the wind, rain and hail is a big feature of this weekend’s surf report and forecast.  The rains will continue thru tomorrow and start to taper off in the afternoon.  Expect some pretty cold winds to blow all night and day with nighttime temps in the high 40s (but around 40 with the wind chill factor) and daytime reaching the mid-50s.  Chance of showers for Sun night and thru Monday with even a slight chance Tues.  Winds will finally calm down Tuesday with Wed being the first clean morning of surf.  Sunshine should return Tues but Wed will be the sunniest and warmest day all week (mid-60s).  Sunshine Thur and Fri too and back to cloudy with a slight potential for some showers for next weekend.  Water temps are pretty chilly with the local buoy readings in the mid 50s.  Moderate to extreme tide swings with the New Moon approaching.  High tide’s in the early AM and the negative tide is midday with some nice water movement all day.  Pretty much the wind is going to mess it all up though so you’ve got a few days to think about it.

DON’T SURF IN POO!

Later skater!

Ocean Notes:

1)       Once things “clean up” a bit there’s always the question of water quality!  Check in with San Diego Coast Keeper and see if your beach is open and safe for surfing.  http://www.sdcoastkeeper.org/learn/san-diegos-waters/coastal-water.html

2)      With some time on our hands with all of this wind and rain I thought a few surf vids would be a good idea this time around.  Let’s start with Cloudbreak Sept 2010…oh my goodness…and I MEAN…GOODNESS!  http://vimeo.com/15181963

3)      This is pretty cool…kite surfing with no straps and killing it!  http://vimeo.com/13450687 More vid...kite surfing in Indo…looks pretty fun… http://vimeo.com/7462419

4)      And now for something completely different…tow-inbig wave riding…on a KAYAK!   Hmmmmmmmmmm…looks like fun til he meets the white water.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxSDdaHzTJM&feature=player_embedded#!

5)      And a little humor to end the day…a new definition of “crowd surfing”… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vvhds75pvo&feature=player_embedded#!
